OpenAI Academy is OpenAI's own learning site, with courses in four tracks: Apply AI at Work for knowledge workers, Build with AI for developers, Lead AI Adoption for leaders, and Teach and Learn with AI for education. Every course ends with an assessment and an official badge issued through Accredible, and that badge is the Academy's version of an OpenAI certification.
So if you searched for OpenAI certifications, that's what exists: a badge for passing a course assessment. Courses sit behind an Academy account (the home page asks you to Join Now or sign in), and OpenAI says they're updated as its products and guidance change. Here's what each track holds, as of October 2026, and where I'd start each person on a team.
The Academy tracks and who each course serves
OpenAI frames the course library around one line, "Build the AI skills your organization needs", and groups courses by who they're for.
| Track and course | Who it's for | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Apply AI at Work: AI Foundations | New to AI | Prompting, context, evaluation, responsible use |
| Apply AI at Work: Applied AI Foundations | Some experience | Turn a recurring task into a reviewed workflow |
| Apply AI at Work: Agents and Workflows | Comfortable with AI | Direct an agent with a clear job, boundaries and review |
| Lead AI Adoption: AI Leadership | Managers and owners | One real initiative, an AI strategy brief, roadmap and governance |
| Build with AI | Developers | OpenAI API and Codex courses |
| Release packs (Astra at Work) | Existing ChatGPT users | Hands-on lessons on new releases, no assessment or badge |
The education track includes AI for Educators, on using ChatGPT to develop teaching materials: a session plan, an activity or assessment, messages, and approved materials with a repeatable routine. OpenAI says every course is built around real workplace tasks, so you practise giving clear instructions, adding relevant context, reviewing outputs, deciding what to delegate and staying in control of the work.
Apply AI at Work: three courses in order
This is the track most of a team will live in. OpenAI orders the three courses by experience:
- AI Foundations, for people new to AI. It covers an introduction, large language models, prompting and evaluation, adding context and responsible use.
- Applied AI Foundations, for people with some experience. You turn a recurring task into a repeatable workflow: break the work into steps, find where ChatGPT can help and build in review points. The outline runs from prompts to workflows, then reasoning models, choosing capabilities, designing the workflow and responsible use in workflows.
- Agents and Workflows, for people comfortable using AI. You practise directing agents through structured work: giving context, defining outputs, setting boundaries, reviewing drafts, improving the workflow and reusing what works. Lessons include 'From Asking to Assigning Work', 'Give the Agent a Clear Job' and 'Getting more out of ChatGPT Work'.
Lead AI Adoption: an owner's strategy brief
The leaders track is the one I'd point an owner at. You work through one real AI initiative and create an initial AI strategy draft, connecting it to business priorities, defining ownership and governance, building a roadmap and planning for adoption.
The AI Leadership course builds what OpenAI calls an 'AI Strategy Brief Pack' that others can use to move the work forward. Its core content covers modelling AI use and setting direction, building your AI roadmap, connecting AI to business value, governance for responsible scale, leading AI adoption, designing AI workflows, developing reliable AI solutions and operationalising what works. In plain terms, you finish with a document your team can act on, not just a badge.
Build with AI, for developers
Build with AI holds OpenAI API courses (Scope AI Solutions, Evaluate AI Applications, Design and Build Agentic Systems, Build with Retrieval-Augmented Generation, and Optimize AI Application Performance). It also holds Codex courses: Get Started with Codex, Extend Codex Workflows, and Scale Codex Across Governed Teams and Systems.
OpenAI's guide to deploying courses across a company
OpenAI publishes a guide for rolling Academy courses out across an organisation. Its steps, in order:
- Make courses broadly available.
- Engage executive backers.
- Launch with coordinated organisation-wide communications.
- Reinforce participation.
- Measure available signals and share outcomes.
Astra at Work: the October 2026 release pack
The freshest material on the courses page sits under What's New: 'Astra at Work: Enterprise Release Activation, October 2026', the first in a Release Pack Series of practical lessons on new OpenAI products. It covers GPT-6 Astra and ChatGPT Work: setting up and personalising ChatGPT Work, choosing a reasoning level, connecting apps and files, creating documents, slides and spreadsheets, and analysing data.
Here's the catch. Release packs carry no assessment and no badge. So the newest, most hands-on content on the site is the one part that won't show up as a credential, which is fine, as long as you know that before you promise anyone a badge for it.

Live sessions, replays and sector pages
The Academy home page has sections for Work, Education, Small business, Nonprofits, Government and News organizations, plus Events, Courses and Communities. Upcoming events listed as of 31 October 2026 include in-person ChatGPT for small business sessions in Port Washington WI on November 5 and Santa Barbara CA on November 13, ChatGPT for what's next in St. Louis on November 12 and Dallas on November 19, ChatGPT for veterans, and livestreams such as 'Performance Reviews: Using ChatGPT to Write Better Evaluations' on November 17, 2026.
On-demand replays include 'Impact Math: Measuring the ROI of LLMs' from October 28, 2026, 'ChatGPT Legislative 101', 'ChatGPT 101 for Government Professionals' and a Codex bootcamp 301 session on advanced automation.
Where I'd start each person
- Create an Academy account with Join Now.
- Start everyone on AI Foundations unless they already prompt daily.
- Move people who use ChatGPT every day to Applied AI Foundations, then Agents and Workflows.
- Give the owner or manager the Lead AI Adoption track and have them finish with a real strategy brief.
- Borrow from OpenAI's deployment guide: an executive backer, an organisation-wide launch message and a way to see who finished.
- Keep the release packs for people who've already finished a course.
My verdict: I'd have the manager take AI Leadership alongside the team, not after it, because the strategy brief gives everyone's course work a target. And I'd be blunt about what a badge means. It shows someone finished a course and passed its assessment, not that their work changed. I'd judge the rollout on the workflows people build in Applied AI Foundations. If your team mostly lives in ChatGPT, my guide to ChatGPT training for teams goes further, and developers comparing options can look at the best Claude Code courses next to Build with AI.
If you'd like help turning courses like these into workflows your team uses every week, that's what I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement, AI automation and GEO, which is about getting your business seen and cited in AI answers. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams, telecom companies and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
