As of October 2026, YouTube Help describes trending as a set of Trending Charts by category rather than one list of every video: Trending Movie Trailers, Trending Music Videos, and Trending Gaming Videos through the Gaming Explore page. The charts aren't personalised, everyone in the same country sees the same videos, and they update roughly every 30 minutes.
That's the short version. The part most people don't expect is how ranking works. YouTube says the video with the most views on a given day may not be number one, and a video with more views can sit below one with fewer. Views from YouTube ads don't count at all.
What YouTube's Trending Charts are
YouTube Help calls Charts a daily spotlight on the most popular content from around the world. The charts vary by category, so you browse the one that matches what you want: movie trailers, music videos or gaming.
Three things follow from the way they're built:
- No personalisation. Your watch history doesn't shape what you see. The same trending videos show for every viewer in your country.
- Other languages appear. Because the list is country-wide, YouTube says you may see videos that aren't in your browser's language.
- Positions move often. The charts refresh roughly every 30 minutes, and with each update a video can move up, move down or hold its place.
How a video gets ranked
Trending Charts can only show a limited number of videos out of everything uploaded on a given day. YouTube Help says it aims to surface videos that are relevant to the chart's topic, aren't misleading, clickbaity or sensational, and showcase a diversity of creators.
To balance those aims, the charts combine many signals. These are the ones YouTube names:
| Signal YouTube lists | What it means for the ranking |
|---|---|
| View count | Counts, but it's one signal among several |
| How fast views are growing (the "temperature") | A fast riser can outrank a bigger, older video |
| Where views come from, including outside YouTube | Traffic from outside YouTube is taken into account |
| The topic of the video | It has to fit the chart it's ranked in |
| The age of the video | How recently it was uploaded is part of the mix |
| Performance against the channel's other recent uploads | It's judged against the same channel's recent videos, not just everyone else's |
Because these are combined automatically, the top view count on the day doesn't guarantee the top spot. That's the single most useful thing to know if a video you expected to see is ranked lower than a smaller one.
What keeps a video off the charts
YouTube Help lists a few firm rules that sit on top of the ranking signals:
- Ad views are excluded. Views from YouTube ads aren't counted when measuring a video for trending charts.
- Only public videos qualify. A video has to be set to public to appear on Charts.
- Safety filters apply. YouTube filters out videos with excessive profanity, mature content or violence, and videos that are otherwise inappropriate, such as disparaging others in the community.
- Restricted Mode can hide some videos. If Restricted Mode is on, certain videos may not show on Charts for you.
- No paid placement. YouTube says it doesn't accept payment for a place on trending charts and doesn't favour specific creators.
If a video you know is popular isn't there, one of those five rules is the likeliest reason. If you're a creator wondering why a video didn't take off, why YouTube views can drop suddenly covers the other side of it.
The music, trailer and podcast charts
YouTube's separate Charts and Insights page covers the hottest artists, music videos, movie trailers and podcasts. Its schedules are worth knowing because they aren't all the same:
| Chart | How often it updates | How it's ranked |
|---|---|---|
| Trending (music) | A few times a day | Songs ranked on popularity at release |
| Daily Top Music Videos | Daily | Most-viewed official music videos |
| Daily Top Songs on Shorts | Daily | Number of Shorts created featuring the song |
| Trending Movie Trailers | A few times a day | The hottest movie trailers on YouTube |
| Weekly Top Songs | Weekly | Combined views across official versions of a song, including user-made videos with the official song |
| Weekly Top Artists | Weekly | Top 100 artists by total views across their songs |
| Weekly Top Songs on Shorts | Weekly | Top 50 songs by number of Shorts created |
| Weekly Top Podcast Shows | Weekly | Total watch time of podcast playlists in a market; clips and Shorts excluded |
Here's the detail worth noticing: the general Trending Charts page says charts update roughly every 30 minutes, while the Charts and Insights page describes the music and movie trailer trending charts as updating a few times a day. Both are YouTube Help pages, so expect the music and trailer lists to move less often than the half-hour figure suggests.
A few more rules from that page:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Paid advertising views don't count toward YouTube Charts.
- Songs that have charted for a few months without significant viewership growth may be removed automatically.
- Content that breaks YouTube's policies may not be eligible.
- YouTube Music Charts are available in 61 countries or regions.
- Weekly Top Podcast Shows is currently available in the US, Canada and Mexico.
- In India, charts are generated based on the user's browser language, and you can choose from 10 common Indic languages.
Music Insights sits alongside the charts and shows what's popular in cities and regions. You can look up the top artists in a location or see where an artist is trending, and YouTube notes that Shorts views are left out of that count.
Trends for creators: the Studio Trends tab
There's a second kind of trending on YouTube, and it's for creators rather than viewers. In YouTube Studio, the Trends tab shows what your audience and viewers across YouTube are searching for, to help with video ideas. You reach it by signing in to YouTube Studio, choosing Analytics in the left menu and clicking the Trends tab at the top.
YouTube Help says audience interest levels there are based on videos watched more than 1,000 times a week over the last 28 days, shown on a scale from very low to very high. It also flags content gaps, where viewers can't find enough good results for a search. Two caveats: some insights are limited to certain countries, languages and devices, and since July 2026 YouTube has been gradually rolling out an updated Studio, so the tab may look different on your account. I've gone through it in more detail in my guide to the YouTube Trends tab.
My verdict
If you just want to see what's trending, open the chart for the category you care about and treat it as a country-wide snapshot, not a feed built for you. Don't read too much into raw view counts, because YouTube openly weighs growth speed, freshness and outside traffic. And if you're a creator, the Studio Trends tab will tell you far more about your own audience than the public charts ever will.
