You get paid on YouTube through an AdSense for YouTube account once your channel is in the YouTube Partner Program, and your money only moves after you've cleared five thresholds in order: tax info, verification, payment method selection, payment and, if you ever close the account, cancelation. As of October 2026 the payment threshold is $100 for a US dollar account, and payouts run between the 21st and 26th of the month after your earnings are finalised.
Most guides only mention the $100. That's why so many new creators think their money is stuck when it isn't. It's waiting at one of the earlier gates.
Before any money moves
You have to be in the YouTube Partner Program. YouTube guides you to create an AdSense for YouTube account the first time, and that account is the main way YouTube pays you. You'll also need 2-Step Verification turned on for your Google Account. If you're still working towards the entry bar, here's how many views you need before YouTube pays.
The five thresholds, in the order you'll meet them
- Tax info. You hit this the moment you're in the Partner Program, wherever you live. Every monetising creator has to give Google US tax info. Without it, Google may deduct up to 24% of your total worldwide earnings, as of October 2026. The tax page asks you to submit it, and claim any treaty benefit, by Dec. 10th each year. For the wider picture, see whether YouTube income gets taxed.
- Verification. When earnings reach the verification threshold you confirm your identity and address. AdSense gives you 45 days from the first request to submit identity documents. Then a PIN goes to your payment address by standard post. It can take up to 2-3 weeks to arrive, you have 4 months from when it's generated to enter it, and no payment is issued until you do. If you have separate AdSense and AdSense for YouTube accounts, you only verify once.
- Payment method selection. Only once your balance reaches this smaller threshold can you choose how you're paid. What you're offered depends on your payment address, and the list can include check, EFT, SEPA, wire transfer and PayPal Hyperwallet (in specific countries only). If you ever need to switch, here's the guide to changing your payment method in AdSense.
- Payment. When your balance reaches the payment threshold, you're paid as long as there are no holds and you're following the AdSense policies and terms. If you run separate AdSense and AdSense for YouTube accounts, each one has to reach its own threshold.
- Cancelation. If you close your AdSense for YouTube account with a balance above this threshold, you get a final payment within approximately 90 days after the end of the month, provided there are no holds and you'd completed every step to get paid.
Payment thresholds by reporting currency
Thresholds vary by the reporting currency in your AdSense for YouTube account. These are YouTube's printed values, as of October 2026:
| Reporting currency | Verification | Choose a method | Payment threshold |
|---|---|---|---|
| US dollar | $10 | $10 | $100 |
| British pound | $10 equivalent | £10 | £60 |
| Euro | $10 equivalent | €10 | €70 |
| Canadian dollar | $10 equivalent | C$10 | C$100 |
| Australian dollar | $10 equivalent | A$15 | A$100 |
| New Zealand dollar | $10 equivalent | $15 | $130 |
| South African rand | $10 equivalent | R100 | R1000 |
| Mexican peso | $10 equivalent | Mex$120 | Mex$1,200 |
Below the payment threshold nothing is lost. Your finalised earnings roll over to the next month and keep adding up until you reach it.
Why the first payment feels so slow
YouTube pays a month behind. Finalised earnings for the previous month are added to your balance between the 7th and 12th, and paid out by the 21st to 26th if you've hit the threshold with no holds. YouTube's own example: if you're in the US and earn $100 in June, you'll see that balance between July 7th and 12th. AdSense puts it another way: if your balance reaches $100 during January and every step is done, you're paid at the end of February. The month-by-month detail is in when YouTube pays out each month.
Add the PIN on top. If it takes 2-3 weeks to arrive by post, and you enter it after the cut-off, your first payout slides again. The estimates in Analytics also shift twice before they're final, once after 1 week and again in the middle of the following month, so the figure you saw first isn't always the figure you're paid.
What has to be true on payday
YouTube lists five conditions, and all of them have to hold:
- your earnings have reached your local payment threshold
- there are no holds on your account
- you've provided your US tax info
- monetisation isn't suspended or paused for your channel
- you're following YouTube's monetisation policies
When YouTube isn't the one paying you
There are two exceptions. If your channel is part of a multi-channel network, YouTube pays the network and the network pays you, on the same timeline as everyone else. And money from sales in your channel's store comes directly from your official merch retailer or platform, not through AdSense for YouTube.

My advice
The first payment is slow because of the PIN and the following-month rule, not because anything's wrong. I'd do three things on day one in the Partner Program: submit your tax info so the 24% backstop never touches you, check your payment address is exactly right so the PIN reaches you, and enter the PIN the day it lands. If you're in an MCN, ask them about their payment dates instead of watching AdSense. And if your balance sits below the threshold for a while, don't panic. It's rolling over, not disappearing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get paid on YouTube for the first time?
Join the YouTube Partner Program, set up AdSense for YouTube, submit your tax info, verify your identity and address with the posted PIN, choose a payment method, then wait until your balance reaches the payment threshold for your currency.
How much do you need to earn before YouTube pays you?
As of October 2026 the payment threshold is $100 for a US dollar account, £60 for pounds, €70 for euros and C$100 for Canadian dollars. Below it, earnings roll over to the next month.
Why haven't I been paid by YouTube yet?
The usual reasons are a missing PIN, missing tax info, a balance below the threshold, a hold on the account or the following-month timing: earnings are finalised the next month and paid between the 21st and 26th.
How long does the YouTube PIN take to arrive?
It's sent by standard post and can take up to 2-3 weeks. You have 4 months from when it's generated to enter it, and no payment is issued until you do.
What happens to the balance if I close AdSense for YouTube?
If it's above the cancelation threshold, you get a final payment within approximately 90 days after the end of the month, as long as there are no holds and you'd completed every step to get paid.
