How to remove Twitter (X) profile picture: Step by Step on X (Twitter), 2026

You can't fully delete your X (formerly Twitter) profile picture, X requires one. To remove it, go to Edit Profile, tap your photo, choose Remove, then save. This resets you to the default grey egg-style avatar, not a blank space. You can't leave the field empty.

Can you remove your X profile picture?

Not completely, no. X does not let you have a blank, empty profile picture. There has to be something there.

What you can do is remove the photo you have uploaded and let X put you back to its default avatar. That is the closest thing to removing your picture.

So if you were hoping for a totally empty circle, that is not possible on X. I want to be clear about that before you start.

What happens when you remove your photo

Once you remove your current profile picture, X replaces it with its standard default image. On most accounts this is a plain grey silhouette.

This default image is the same one new accounts get before they upload anything. It is not personal to you, it is just a placeholder.

Your old photo is not shown publicly anymore once you remove it, but it may still exist in X's systems or in cached versions elsewhere on the web for a while.

Step by step: removing your profile picture on desktop

Here is how to do it using a web browser on a laptop or desktop computer.

  1. Log into your X account at x.com.
  2. Click your profile icon or go to your profile page.
  3. Click Edit profile.
  4. Click on your current profile picture.
  5. Select Remove photo from the options shown.
  6. Click Save to confirm the change.

Your profile will then show the default avatar instead of your old picture. This usually updates straight away, though sometimes it takes a few minutes to show everywhere, including in older tweets or replies.

Step by step: removing your profile picture on the mobile app

The process is much the same on the X app for iPhone or Android.

  1. Open the X app and go to your profile.
  2. Tap Edit profile.
  3. Tap your profile picture.
  4. Choose Remove photo.
  5. Tap Save or the confirm option at the top of the screen.

As with desktop, your picture is replaced with the default image, not left blank. The layout of the edit screen can shift slightly between app updates, but the Edit profile and Remove photo steps stay roughly the same.

What if the Remove option is not showing

If you tap your photo and do not see a remove option, try updating your app to the latest version first. Older versions sometimes display the edit menu differently.

On the web, try refreshing the page or logging out and back in. A stuck session can sometimes stop the edit menu loading.

If you still cannot find it, you can instead upload a different, plain image, such as a single block colour, as a workaround. This is not the same as removing it, but it gets you close to a neutral look.

Will people still see your old picture anywhere?

Once removed, your old picture should not show on your live profile, in your bio, or next to new posts.

However, older content that has already been shared, screenshotted, or cached by search engines and third party sites may still show the old image for some time. X removing it from your profile does not reach back and update everywhere it has previously appeared.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

This is just how most social platforms work, not something specific to X doing anything wrong.

Should you remove it or just change it?

Before you remove your picture entirely, think about why you want to do it. If you are taking a break from the platform, removing the photo and reverting to default can signal that clearly.

If you are worried about privacy, changing to a non identifying image, such as a logo or illustration, might suit you better than going back to the default avatar, since default avatars are extremely common and do not hide the fact you are active.

If you are rebranding an account, uploading a new photo straight away is usually simpler than removing the old one first and uploading later as two separate steps.

A quick summary

You cannot have a blank profile picture on X (formerly Twitter). Removing your photo sets you back to the default image, it does not leave the space empty.

The steps are the same in spirit on both desktop and mobile, go to Edit profile, tap or click your picture, choose Remove, then save.

If the option does not appear, update your app or refresh your browser first before assuming something is broken.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave my X profile picture completely blank?

No. X does not allow an empty profile picture field. If you remove your current photo, X automatically replaces it with its standard default avatar image instead of leaving it blank.

Does removing my profile picture delete it from X's servers?

Removing it takes it off your public profile, but X may retain copies internally for a period. Cached versions on search engines or third party sites may also still show the old image for some time.

Will my old profile picture still show on past tweets?

It should update across your account generally, but screenshots, cached pages, or content shared outside X may still display your old picture, since you cannot retroactively change how it appeared elsewhere.

What does the default X avatar look like after I remove my photo?

It is typically a plain grey silhouette image, the same default new accounts receive before uploading a picture. It is not personalised and does not include your name or initials.
