You cannot delete DMs from both sides on X (formerly Twitter). Deleting a message or conversation only removes it from your own view. The other person still has it in their inbox. X has no feature to delete or unsend a message for someone else, so if content matters, assume it stays unless they delete it too.
Can you really delete X messages from both sides
No. I will say this plainly at the start because it is the most common thing people get wrong. X (formerly Twitter) does not let you delete a direct message for the other person. You can only remove it from your own inbox.
This trips people up because other apps work differently. Some messaging apps let you unsend or delete for everyone. X does not have that option, so do not go looking for it.
If you have sent something you regret, deleting it on your side will not make it disappear from theirs. The only way it comes down from their account is if they delete it themselves.
What happens when you delete a DM on X
When you delete a message, you are deleting your copy of it. The conversation stays visible to the other person exactly as it was before.
Deleting an entire conversation works the same way. It removes the thread from your inbox list. It does not touch what is sitting in the other person's inbox.
There is also no notification sent when you delete something. The other person will not know you removed it unless they happen to check and notice the thread looks different on your end, which they cannot see anyway.
How to delete a single message on X
If you want to clear a message from your own view, here is how to do it.
- Open the Messages tab on X.
- Tap into the conversation containing the message.
- Press and hold the message (or right click on desktop).
- Select Delete from the menu that appears.
- Confirm when prompted.
That message is now gone from your inbox. It still exists in the other person's conversation.
How to delete an entire conversation on X
Sometimes you want the whole thread gone from your side, not just one message. The steps are similar.
- Go to Messages.
- Find the conversation in your list.
- Swipe left on it, or tap the three dots next to it on desktop.
- Choose Delete conversation.
- Confirm the action.
Again, this only clears your inbox. The other person keeps their full copy of every message you sent them.
Why X does not offer delete for both sides
I am not going to pretend there is a hidden setting for this. There is not. X has built its messaging around the idea that each person controls their own inbox, not the shared record of a conversation.
This is a deliberate design choice on most messaging platforms, not just X. Once you send something, the other person has received it. Letting senders reach back and erase it from someone else's device raises obvious problems, so most platforms avoid it.
If you are hoping a future update changes this, I cannot tell you that it will. I have not seen anything from X suggesting a delete-for-everyone feature is planned.
What to do if you need a message gone from someone else's inbox
Since you cannot delete it for them, your options are limited and honest ones.
You can ask the person directly to delete it on their end. That is the only way the message leaves their account.

If the message involves harassment, threats, or something that breaks X's rules, you can report it instead of trying to delete it. Reporting does not remove it from their inbox either, but it flags the content to X for review, which is a different route entirely from deletion.
Blocking someone does not delete your message history either
A lot of people assume blocking clears old DMs. It does not.
If you block someone on X, your past conversation with them stays in both inboxes as it was. Blocking stops future contact and interaction, but it is not a deletion tool.
Deactivating or deleting your entire X account is a separate matter again. That removes your account and its content from the platform over time, but it is a drastic step for what is usually a much smaller problem, and I would not recommend it just to erase one conversation.
A quick summary before you try this yourself
Deleting a DM or conversation on X only affects your own inbox. The other person's copy stays exactly where it was.
There is no setting, menu, or workaround that deletes a message from both sides at once. If someone tells you otherwise, they are mistaken.
Your realistic options are to delete your own copy for tidiness, ask the other person to delete theirs, or report content that breaks the rules. That is the full picture, and I would rather tell you that straight than send you hunting for a feature that is not there.
Frequently asked questions
Can I delete a DM so the other person cannot see it anymore
No. Deleting a message on X only removes it from your inbox. The other person keeps their copy of the message and the full conversation, regardless of what you do on your side.
Does blocking someone delete the messages between us
No. Blocking stops future contact but does not touch existing conversations. Old messages remain in both inboxes exactly as they were before you blocked the person.
Will the other person know if I delete a message
No. X does not send a notification when you delete a message or conversation. The other person simply keeps seeing their copy as normal, with no sign anything changed on your end.
Is there any way to force a message off someone else's X account
Not through deletion. You can ask them to remove it themselves, or report the message to X if it breaks platform rules. Reporting does not delete it, but it flags it for review.
