Wix domains are custom web addresses you buy from the Domains page in your Wix account, and Wix offers over 400 extensions. A domain is a separate subscription from your Premium or Studio site plan, and you need both before your own domain can show on your Wix site.
Here's the catch most people find out too late. Wix domain subscriptions are non-refundable and don't come with the 14 day guarantee or trial period that site plans have. And once you've bought a domain, you can't change the name. Wix's own advice is that the only fix is registering a new domain, so check the spelling twice before you pay.
Domain or site plan: you need both
This trips up a lot of new Wix users. A Premium or Studio site plan is the upgrade that gives you premium features, removes Wix ads and lets you connect your own domain. The domain is the address itself. As of October 2026, Wix says that to connect your own domain you need a domain, bought from Wix or another host, and a Wix site plan. Without a plan, your free address stays in the siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress format, and editing the prefix or the site address won't remove the wixsite.com part.
Wix is the registrar for .com and .net and is accredited by ICANN, and it acts as a reseller for every other extension. That matters later, because the third party registrar behind a resold domain has rights of its own when the domain expires.
Who gets the free domain voucher
With the first purchase of selected yearly or multi-year Premium or Studio plans, you get a voucher for a free domain for one year. As of October 2026, the rules are tighter than the marketing suggests.
- It's only included with a first-time plan purchase, not a renewal or an upgrade of an existing plan. Switching from monthly to yearly billing does count.
- Monthly plans don't get it.
- It's valid for two months from the date you bought the plan. You'll find it on the Premium Vouchers page in your account.
- It can't be applied to a domain you bought before the plan, and you can't get a refund for that domain either.
- It doesn't include privacy protection, which is an extra purchase.
- You still enter payment details when you claim it, so the domain can renew after the free year.
- It works on a domain you're transferring to Wix, and a Billing Manager can apply it for the site owner.
The voucher covers a set list of extensions, including .com, .co.uk, .net, .org, .ca, .com.au, .shop, .store and .online. If you're weighing up other ways to get a domain without paying, my guide to getting a free domain name covers the options.
How to buy a domain from Wix
- Go to Domains in your Wix account and click Buy a Domain.
- Enter the name and extension, then click Search. If it's free, click Get It. If not, try another name or the domain name generator.
- Choose the registration period and click Continue.
- Enter or edit your contact information and click Continue.
- Pick a Privacy and Security option: Private Registration and DNSSEC, Private Registration, or Public Registration.
- Choose your payment method and click Submit Purchase. Your domain is registered as soon as the purchase completes.
A domain bought from Wix can have up to 60 characters, except .com.br, which is limited to 26. The www part isn't part of your domain name; it's a subdomain, and visitors still reach your site without it. Once it's bought, the next job is to connect the domain to your Wix site.
Privacy: decide at checkout, not later
Every registered domain is listed in the WHOIS database. With Public Registration, Wix lists an alternative email address and phone number and sends people to a contact form, but your other contact details stay public. Private Registration replaces all your personal details with Wix's. Users in the EU get some details hidden under GDPR anyway, with only country, state or province and organisation showing.
If you skip privacy at checkout, you can't add it to your current subscription. You have to extend the domain by at least one more year and add privacy during the extension. The fee isn't refundable. Some extensions don't support private registration at all, including .co.uk, .uk, .ca, .com.au, .de and .ai. Turning privacy off or on can take up to 48 hours to show in WHOIS.
Renewals and extending your registration
Wix sets domains to renew automatically. You can add up to 5 more years by extending, but 4 and 5 year periods are only offered for .com, .net and .org; other domains go up to 3 years. A few extensions, including .de, .ch, .at, .nl, .fr and .be, can't be renewed manually at all, so if you've switched auto renew off on one of those, you have to turn it back on to keep the domain.

What happens when a Wix domain expires
| Stage | How long, as of October 2026 | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Registration period | The years you paid for | Renews automatically unless you turn auto renew off |
| Grace period | About 30 days | Extend at no extra cost; the domain is disconnected from your site but stays in your account |
| Redemption period | About 30 days | Click Keep Domain and pay a redemption fee; recovery can take up to 7 days |
| Pending Delete | 5 to 10 days | Nothing; it can't be retrieved |
| Available to all | From then on | Anyone can register it, including you, if you get there first |
Two warnings from Wix's help are worth reading twice. The third party registrar has the right to privately auction a resold domain within the last 10 days of the grace period, and release from redemption isn't guaranteed. And some endings skip the grace period entirely and go straight to redemption on the expiry date, including .de, .fr, .nl, .be, .ch and .at. A .me domain has no grace period and no redemption period.
My verdict on Wix domains
I'd buy through Wix if you want your site, domain and renewals in one account and you're already on a yearly plan, because the voucher covers year one. I'd buy elsewhere if you need an extension Wix doesn't sell or you want privacy on a .co.uk, which Wix can't offer. Whichever you choose, keep the card on file current; a failed payment starts the same expiry clock as switching renewal off. If you're still comparing, my list of domain registrars sets out the alternatives.
A domain is usually the first step to a business that runs online, and the next step is getting the routine tasks around it off your plate. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions
Do I get a free domain with Wix?
Yes, if you buy a selected yearly or multi-year Premium or Studio plan for the first time. The voucher covers one year, is valid for two months from purchase and doesn't include privacy protection.
Can I get a refund on a Wix domain?
No. Wix domain subscriptions are non-refundable and don't include a trial period. To stop paying, turn off auto renew and the domain expires at the end of the current period.
Can I change my Wix domain name after buying it?
No. Once you've bought a domain, the only way to change the name is to register a new domain.
Can I add private registration to a domain I already own on Wix?
Only by extending the domain for at least one more year and adding privacy during the extension. Some extensions, such as .co.uk, don't support it.
How long can I wait to renew an expired Wix domain?
Most domains have a grace period of about 30 days with no extra cost, then a redemption period of about 30 days with a fee. Some extensions skip the grace period.
