Wix DNS: Managing Records, Name Servers vs Pointing and Fixing a Site That Isn't Live

Wix DNS is the set of records, such as A, CNAME, MX and TXT, that tell the internet where to find your site and email, and you manage them under Domains in your Wix account by choosing Manage DNS records. That only works when your domain uses Wix's name servers; if it's connected by pointing or uses custom name servers, the records live with your other DNS provider.

Here's the trap. People open Wix, add an email or verification record, wait two days and nothing changes. The usual reason is that the domain is connected by pointing, so the DNS that counts sits at the original domain host, and edits in Wix do nothing. Check your connection method before you touch a single record.

Name servers or pointing: who holds your records

A domain bought from Wix or transferred to Wix connects by name servers automatically. For a domain registered elsewhere, you choose. As of October 2026, this is how Wix describes the two methods.

Wix support for DNS problemsYesNo; contact your DNS host
Features that need itSending Email Marketing campaigns from your own domain, Wix Multilingual language subdomains, Wix Photo Albums subdomainsNone of those

Wix's own advice is that pointing suits domains with complicated DNS you'd rather not rebuild. It specifically mentions Microsoft Office 365 business emails, which need several custom records; if they already work, pointing avoids re-adding them. On pointing, update both the A and CNAME records, or visitors may see a Not secure warning. For the full connection walkthrough, see my guide to connecting a domain to Wix.

How to add or edit a DNS record in Wix

  1. Go to Domains in your Wix account and click the Domain Actions icon next to the domain.
  2. Click Manage DNS records.
  3. Scroll to the record type you need, such as CNAME or TXT, and click Add Record. To change an existing one, hover over it and click Edit.
  4. Enter the record. If your provider tells you to put @ in the Host Name field, leave Host Name blank instead.
  5. Click Save, then Save Changes in the pop-up.

Two warnings from Wix. Deleting your domain's default A or CNAME records may take your site offline, and you can reset them to the defaults if you've changed them. And the www host name is reserved for connecting the Wix site, so if a mailbox provider asks for a CNAME on www, you'll get a Hostname already in use error and need to ask them for a different host name.

Leave TTL at the default. Wix says changing it doesn't speed up propagation; it only changes how long servers cache the record.

Switching to custom name servers

You can keep the domain registered at Wix and hand its DNS to another provider, for example if a host requires its own name servers. You'll need both name servers from the new provider, and Wix says to unassign the domain from your Wix site first. The switch is under Manage DNS records, in the Nameservers section, with Use custom nameservers.

Know what you give up. Once you switch, Wix no longer manages your DNS records, any records you set up in Wix stop working, Wix can't renew your SSL certificate through the domain's DNS, and Wix mailboxes and email routing stop unless the new provider has the right MX records. Reset to Wix in the same section brings everything back. One mixed message worth knowing: Wix's connection guide also says it doesn't support DNS proxies like Cloudflare when you connect a domain to a Wix site, so check those settings are off.

Propagation and checking your records

Any DNS change can take up to 48 hours to spread worldwide. During that time, your site may not show, an old site may appear, emails may not arrive, published changes may not show and one browser can disagree with another. The SSL certificate is only issued once propagation finishes.

To check progress, note the records in your Wix account, then search your domain on whatsmydns.net. For name servers, search without www and pick NS. For pointing, search the A record without www and the CNAME with www. A green check means that location has the record; a red X means it hasn't propagated there yet or the check couldn't reach the server. If you're switching from name servers to pointing, Wix's records are an A record on @ pointing to 185.230.63.107 and a www CNAME pointing to pointing.wixdns.net.

Domain connected but the site isn't live

Wix's checklist is short: make sure you've published the site, upgraded it to a plan, connected the domain and waited 48 hours since changing the records. After that, run the Wix Domain Assistant. If records look right but your own computer still won't load the site, clear your browser cache, then flush your DNS; on Windows that's ipconfig /flushdns in the Command Prompt.

DNSSEC on a Wix domain

DNSSEC can't be bought on its own at Wix; it comes bundled with private registration. It's available in all non-EU countries and for all .com domains, and adding it to a domain you already own means extending the registration by at least a year. The fee isn't refundable, though you can switch the protection off and on later.

My verdict on Wix DNS

I'd use Wix name servers if your site, email and subdomains are mostly Wix based, because you get one place to manage records and Wix support when something breaks. I'd stick with pointing if you run Office 365 email or lots of verification records elsewhere and they already work. Whatever you pick, screenshot your existing records before any change. If you're newer to the platform, my beginner's walkthrough on how to use Wix fills in the basics.

DNS is one of those jobs that's simple once and painful at scale, and checklists like this are easy to turn into automated checks. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I edit my DNS records in Wix?

If your domain is connected by pointing or uses custom name servers, you must manage DNS records with your DNS provider or domain host, not Wix.

How long do Wix DNS changes take?

Domain propagation can take up to 48 hours. During that time your site may not show, or may show in one browser and not another.

What do I put in the Host Name field for @ in Wix?

Leave it blank. Wix says that if you're told to use the @ sign in the Host Name field, you should leave the field empty instead.

Will changing my name servers break my Wix email?

It can. After switching to custom name servers, Wix mailboxes and email routing stop working unless the new DNS provider has the correct MX records.

Does lowering TTL make Wix DNS changes faster?

No. Wix says changing the TTL value doesn't speed up propagation and recommends leaving it at the default.
