YouTube doesn't have its own password. You sign in with your Google Account, so to change your YouTube password you change your Google Account password: open your Google Account, go to Security and sign-in, click Password, enter a new one and select Change Password. It changes for Gmail and every other Google service too.
That surprises a lot of people, and it matters: a new password signs you out of most devices at once. Here are the steps from YouTube Help and Google Account Help, read in October 2026.
How to change your YouTube password on a computer
- Open your Google Account. You might need to sign in.
- At the top left, click Security and sign-in.
- In the section How you sign in to Google, click Password. You might need to sign in again.
- Enter your new password, then select Change Password.
On your phone
On a phone, open your Google Account in a browser or the Google app and follow the same steps: Security and sign-in, then Password. YouTube Help sends you to your Google Account for this, because there's no separate YouTube password to change.
What changes when you change your YouTube password
| Area | What happens |
|---|---|
| YouTube, Gmail, Calendar and other Google services | All use the new password |
| Most devices | You're signed out and need to sign in again |
| Devices you use to verify it's you | Stay signed in |
| Some third-party apps you've given access | May stay signed in |
| Home devices with account access | May stay signed in |
So after changing it, expect your smart TV, games console and second phone to ask you to sign in to YouTube again. If you use YouTube on a TV, keep your new password handy.
Forgot your YouTube password? Reset it
- Follow Google's account recovery steps.
- Answer the questions that confirm it's your account.
- Use the email Google sends to choose a new password.
- Pick a password you haven't used with this account before.
If the email doesn't arrive, Google suggests checking your junk, spam or bulk folders, adding [email protected] to your address book, requesting another email through the recovery steps, and checking every email address you might have used to sign up.
Change it straight away if someone else got in
Google's advice is to change your password immediately if you think someone else is signed in to your Google Account, and to change it anywhere else you reused it. Then check which devices are signed in to your account and remove any you don't recognise.
A stronger password for YouTube
- Use a long password you haven't used anywhere else.
- Store it in a password manager rather than a note on your phone.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google Account.
- Add a recovery phone number and email so you can get back in.
If you run a channel, this matters even more. A hijacked Google Account means a hijacked channel.
Sharing a channel? Don't share the password
Because your YouTube password is your Google password, sharing it hands over your Gmail and everything else too. If someone helps with your channel, give them their own access instead of your login. For families, my guide on YouTube supervised accounts explains the safer setup for children.
Signed out everywhere? Get back in quickly
After a password change, sign back in on the devices you use most: your phone, your TV and any tablet. If you've cleared your history while you're at it, here's how to clear YouTube search history on each device.
If someone else changed your password
If you didn't change your password but it no longer works, treat it as a security problem, not a typo. Start Google's account recovery straight away, and once you're back in, review your account's security settings and signed-in devices.

My advice
Change it from your Google Account, not by hunting through the YouTube app. Do it on a computer if you can, then sign back in on your TV and phone straight away so nothing important is left logged out.

Frequently asked questions
How do I change my YouTube password?
Change your Google Account password. Open your Google Account, go to Security and sign-in, click Password, enter a new one and select Change Password.
Is my YouTube password the same as my Gmail password?
Yes. You sign in to YouTube with your Google Account, so the password is the same for YouTube, Gmail and other Google services.
Will changing my YouTube password log me out?
Yes, on most devices. Devices you use to verify it's you, some third-party apps and some home devices may stay signed in.
How do I reset a forgotten YouTube password?
Use Google's account recovery steps, confirm it's your account, and follow the email Google sends you.
Can I change my password in the YouTube app?
No. The YouTube app doesn't have its own password setting. You change it in your Google Account.
Can I use an old password again on YouTube?
Google asks you to choose a password you haven't already used with this account.
Why didn't I get Google's password reset email?
Check junk, spam and bulk folders, add [email protected] to your address book, request another email and check every address you might have used.
Does changing my YouTube password sign me out of my TV?
Usually, yes. Changing your Google password signs you out of most devices, so you'll need to sign in on your TV again.
