WordPress Anti-Spam Plugins: 11 Compared (2026)

A WordPress anti spam plugin stops junk comments and form entries before they reach your inbox, either by checking them against a spam database, by catching bots with a hidden field or token, or by adding a captcha alternative. Pick the method first, because it decides what your visitors see and where your form data goes.

Spam is the tax every WordPress site pays. Leave a comment form or a contact form open for a week and you'll find links to things you'd never sell, in languages you don't speak.

There are four main ways to stop it, and the eleven plugins below cover all of them. They're in no particular order, listed alphabetically, and each description comes from the plugin's own WordPress.org listing. If you're setting up a new site, my list of plugins to install first on a new WordPress site is a good companion to this one.

How I chose these anti-spam plugins

Every plugin here is in the WordPress.org plugin directory and describes itself as anti-spam or spam protection. I compared what each listing shows: active installs, the average rating and the number of ratings behind it, the last updated date and the author. Those are as of Oct 2026 and they change. The free plan column says Yes only where the listing names free use or a free version; Not stated means it didn't, so check before you rely on it.

WP Armour Honeypot Anti Spam

Best for: Honeypot protection on common forms with no captcha for visitors, and a free version per the listing; 400,000+ active installs, 5.0 from 1,469 ratings.

WPBruiser Security

Best for: Blocking bots that post straight to your forms, using a hidden token a real visitor's browser fetches in the background; 4.6 average, updated Oct 24, 2026.

Cloud checks, honeypots, hidden tokens and captcha alternatives

Cloud checkers send each comment or form entry to a service that compares it with spam seen across lots of sites. Akismet's listing says it checks submissions against its global database, and others describe a shared detection network or machine learning. They catch a lot, but your visitors' entries leave your server to be checked.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Honeypots add a hidden field that people never see and bots fill in, and one plugin uses a hidden token the visitor's browser fetches in the background instead. Captcha alternatives put a light challenge on the form. And one plugin here says it works with no API key and no data leaving your server, which matters if you'd rather keep form entries in-house.

Five million installs, 1,187 ratings

Install counts and rating counts tell very different stories in this category. Akismet Anti-spam shows 1,187 ratings on 5,000,000+ active installs, while WPBruiser Security shows 213 ratings on 10,000+ active installs, as of Oct 2026 on the WordPress.org plugin directory.

So the plugin on the most sites by a long way has a rating count closer to some of the small ones than its install band would suggest. Two other plugins on this list have more ratings than it does. Read the average, the rating count and the install band together, and look at the last updated date: on this list they run from May 28, 2026 to Oct 29, 2026.

Which anti-spam approach for which site

  • A blog with lots of comments: a cloud checker, or a honeypot made for comments.
  • Contact forms on a small business site: a honeypot or hidden-token plugin, so visitors have nothing to solve.
  • You'd rather form data never leaves your server: a plugin whose listing says it works locally with no API key.
  • Login and registration attacks as well as spam: a plugin that covers spam and login protection together.
  • You already use Cloudflare: a plugin that adds Cloudflare Turnstile to your forms.

Before you install a spam plugin

  1. List every form on your site: comments, contact forms, registration, login and checkout.
  2. Check that the plugin's listing names your form plugin, because support varies a lot.
  3. Look at the last updated date, since spam bots change and the plugin needs to keep up.
  4. Run one spam plugin per form rather than stacking several, so you know which one's doing the work.
  5. Send yourself a test entry after setup to make sure real messages still get through.

Every plugin you add is another thing to update, so it's worth reading my take on the benefits and drawbacks of website plugins before you install three where one will do.

My plain advice on choosing an anti-spam plugin

Choose the method before the plugin. If you want zero friction for visitors and you're happy for entries to be checked off-site, a cloud checker is the simplest route. If you'd rather keep data on your own server, go for a honeypot or a local filter. Then check the last updated date and the rating count, not just the stars, and test a real message after setup.

And whatever you pick, keep an eye on your inbox for the first week. If real enquiries start going missing, that's a bigger problem than a bit of spam.

Frequently asked questions

What does a WordPress anti spam plugin do?

It stops junk comments and form entries before they reach you, either by checking them against a spam service, catching bots with a hidden field or token, or adding a captcha alternative to the form.

What's a honeypot in spam protection?

It's a hidden form field that people never see and bots usually fill in. When it's filled in, the plugin treats the entry as spam, so real visitors have nothing extra to do.

Do anti spam plugins send my form data elsewhere?

Cloud checkers do, because that's how they compare entries with spam seen elsewhere. One plugin here says it needs no API key and no data leaves your server.

Is there a free anti spam plugin for WordPress?

Two listings here name free use: one honeypot plugin mentions a free version and one captcha alternative calls itself free. The others don't state a free plan on their listing.

Should I run more than one spam plugin?

Usually not on the same form. One plugin per form makes it easier to see what's working and to spot it if real messages stop arriving.
