Hulu's no-ads option is Hulu Premium (No Ads), and on it most shows and movies in the Hulu streaming library play without ad breaks. It isn't ad-free everywhere, though: live channels, Cloud DVR recordings and extra network content on Live TV plans still carry ads, and so does some live content on Disney+ in a bundle, as of October 2026.
Here's the bit most people miss. Due to streaming rights, Hulu can exclude a few select shows from the no-ads plan, and those play a short ad break before and after each episode. Right now Hulu says no shows in its streaming library do this, but it also says the list can change, so a stray ad on one series isn't necessarily a fault.
Where ads still turn up on a no-ads plan
| What you're watching | Ads on Hulu Premium (No Ads)? |
|---|---|
| Shows and movies in the Hulu streaming library | No, apart from any excluded shows (currently none) |
| Premium add-ons such as HBO Max, Cinemax, Paramount+ with SHOWTIME and STARZ | Plays uninterrupted, but a brief promotional ad may run first |
| ESPN Select add-on content | Yes, it includes ads |
| Live streams from the 90+ networks on a Live TV plan | Yes |
| Your Cloud DVR recordings | Yes, though you can fast forward through them |
| Extra on-demand or live content from network partners | Yes, it sits outside the streaming library |
That last row is what catches Live TV subscribers out. If you're on Hulu (No Ads) + Live TV, your plan includes on-demand content from each network on top of live streams and DVR recordings. Those videos aren't part of the Hulu streaming library and are only there for Live TV subscribers, so they're likely to have ad breaks whichever plan you pay for.
How ads work on the ad-supported plans
On an ad-supported plan, ads run at the start of a stream and throughout the video, much like a traditional TV broadcast. You can't fast forward through ad breaks anywhere except your own Cloud DVR recordings on a Live TV plan. Hulu says carrying a modest ad load is what lets it offer current season TV, exclusive shows and Hulu Originals at a competitive price.
The ads you see are personalised by what you're watching, where you're located and what you've streamed before. Ad Selector gives you 2 to 3 ads to choose between, and pausing a video or interacting with an ad also shapes what comes next. If you're deciding whether going ad-free is worth paying for, this breakdown of what each Hulu plan costs lays the plans side by side.
Ads in Disney+ and HBO Max bundles
In a bundle, whether you see ads depends on your plan, and that applies in the Hulu, Disney+ and HBO Max apps. Hulu Premium (No Ads) and Disney+ Premium (No Ads) come with the Disney+, Hulu Bundle Premium, the Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Bundle Premium and the Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max Bundle (No Ads), and they're generally free of commercial interruption.
The Disney+ side of those bundles can still show limited promotional content: clips and trailers for Hulu, Disney+ or other Disney products, branded content and product integrations. Select live and linear content, including TV streams, special events and much of the ESPN sports content on Disney+, carries ads too. Here's how the Disney+ plans compare if you're choosing a bundle.
When an ad blocker stops Hulu playing
On an ad-supported plan, an ad blocker doesn't skip the ads; it stops the video. With AdBlock or Adblock Plus running, you may get an error saying Hulu's unable to load the message that plays before your show. Allow ads on Hulu.com and it'll play.
| Browser | Extension | What to click |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | Adblock Plus | The ABP icon, then uncheck Enabled on this site |
| Chrome | AdBlock | The AdBlock icon, then Pause AdBlock |
| Firefox | Adblock Plus | The Adblock Plus icon, then Disable on hulu.com |
| Safari | AdBlock | The AdBlock button, then Pause AdBlock |
| Safari | Adblock Plus | The Adblock Plus icon, then Enabled on this site to switch it off |
If ads still won't play on Hulu.com, work out which of these three situations you're in and follow the matching fix.

- Only some ads fail: run a speed test, compare the result with Hulu's recommendations and work through its playback troubleshooting steps.
- Every ad fails on one browser: disable the ad blocker, clear the browser cache, force quit and restart the browser, and remove any extension that could block ads. In Chrome that's the three-dot menu, More Tools, Extensions, then Remove. Or switch to a different supported browser.
- Every ad fails on every browser: check security software such as Kaspersky, McAfee or Norton and try lowering its settings or disabling it, then check your network or firewall settings for restrictions.
These steps are for Hulu.com. If ads won't load in the Hulu app, Hulu points you to its general playback troubleshooting instead.
My verdict on paying for Hulu with no ads
I'd pay for no ads if most of your viewing is the Hulu streaming library, because that's where it does what it says. I'd think twice if you're on Live TV and mostly watch live channels, sports or recordings, since those have ads on either plan, although you can at least fast forward through a recording. And if you're on an ad-supported plan with a blocker installed, pause it for Hulu.com rather than fighting playback errors. Frequently asked questions
Does Hulu (No Ads) have any ads at all?
Most shows and movies in the Hulu streaming library are ad-free. Live TV streams, Cloud DVR recordings and extra network content still have ads, and a brief promotional ad may run before premium add-on content.
Which shows are excluded from Hulu Premium (No Ads)?
Hulu says there currently aren't any, but due to streaming rights select shows could play a short ad break before and after each episode, and the list can change.
Can I skip ads on Hulu?
You can't fast forward through ad breaks, except in Cloud DVR recordings on a Live TV plan.
Why won't Hulu play with my ad blocker on?
On an ad-supported plan, AdBlock and Adblock Plus stop the ads loading, which stops playback. Pause or disable the extension on Hulu.com.
Does the Disney+ part of a no-ads bundle have ads?
It's generally free of commercial interruption, but it can show limited promotional content, and select live content, including much of the ESPN sports on Disney+, has ads.
