YouTube Smart Downloads is a Premium setting that automatically saves recommended videos to your phone so you have something to watch offline. To turn it off, tap your profile picture, open your Downloads playlist, tap the menu, choose Settings and switch Smart Downloads off.
If your phone storage has filled up with YouTube videos you never chose to download, this is almost certainly why. Smart Downloads quietly picks videos for you and saves them in the background, which is great before a flight and annoying on a phone that's already full.
What Smart Downloads does
YouTube says Smart Downloads adds recommended videos to your downloads automatically, chosen from your watch history, so you can watch them without a connection. It's a YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium feature. Three rules shape how it behaves:
- It needs a connection to start. Downloads stop if you go offline or your phone's storage runs low.
- New videos are downloaded every seven days, and the previous batch is replaced.
- The videos are picked for you. You can delete ones you don't want, but you don't choose them.
How to turn Smart Downloads off (or on)
- Open the YouTube app, signed in to your Premium account.
- Tap your profile picture.
- At the top of your Library, tap the Downloaded filter to open your Downloads playlist.
- Tap the three-dot Menu and choose Settings.
- Switch Smart Downloads off. Do the same to turn it back on.
Find, keep or delete your Smart Downloads
Your Smart Downloads sit inside the Downloads playlist, in their own Smart Downloads section, separate from the videos you saved yourself. To remove one, tap the menu next to the video and choose Delete from downloads. Bear in mind the whole batch is swapped out every seven days anyway, so if you like one, download it yourself so it doesn't vanish in the next refresh.
Smart Downloads vs downloads you choose
| Smart Downloads | Your own downloads | |
|---|---|---|
| Who picks the videos | YouTube, from your watch history | You |
| How often they change | A new batch every seven days, replacing the old one | They stay until you delete them |
| Where they appear | The Smart Downloads section of your Downloads playlist | The main Downloads playlist |
| How to remove one | Menu, then Delete from downloads | Menu, then Delete from downloads |
The difference that matters is the weekly swap. Anything Smart Downloads saved for you will be replaced, so it's not a reliable way to keep a video for a trip. If there's a video you know you'll want offline, download it yourself before you leave. Treat Smart Downloads as a bonus shelf of extras, not your travel library.
It also helps to know what the feature can't do. It won't download anything while you're offline, it won't keep going once your storage gets low, and it won't appear at all unless you're signed in with Premium. If you share a family tablet and only one person has the membership, the downloads follow that person's watch history, not everyone's.
Control how much space it uses
| Setting | Where to find it | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Storage limit | Settings, Background & downloads, Adjust Smart downloads, Custom | A slider for how much of your phone's storage Smart Downloads can use |
| Download quality | Downloads playlist, Menu, Settings, Download quality | The resolution of downloaded videos. Lower quality takes less space |
| On or off | Downloads playlist, Menu, Settings | Whether YouTube downloads recommended videos at all |
If you like the idea but not the storage hit, use the slider rather than switching it off. A small allowance plus a lower download quality gives you a few emergency videos for a train journey without eating half your phone.
Smart Downloads not working?
- Check you're signed in to the account with Premium. The setting doesn't appear on a standard account.
- Make sure you're connected. Smart Downloads only start while you're online.
- Free up storage. YouTube stops the downloads when space runs low.
- Give it time. The videos are chosen from your watch history, so a brand-new or rarely used account may not get much.
- Update the app if the toggle is missing from your download settings.
Smart Downloads in YouTube Music
YouTube Music has its own version for songs rather than videos. It downloads music from your listening history, and it has a separate switch inside the YouTube Music app under Settings, then Downloads and storage. Turning off Smart Downloads in the YouTube app doesn't touch the music version, so check both if storage is the problem. My guide to making a YouTube playlist is handy if you'd rather choose your own offline videos.

Who should keep it on
Keep it on if you commute through dead zones, travel often, or hand a tablet to a child on long journeys. It means there's always something new to watch without you having to remember to download anything. Switch it off, or turn the storage slider right down, if your phone is short on space, if you share a device, or if you only ever watch specific channels you'd rather download yourself.
My verdict
Smart Downloads is a useful feature with a bad habit of hiding. If your storage is full of videos you don't recognise, that's where they came from. Turn it off from the Downloads playlist settings, or keep it and set a small storage limit. For other app settings worth checking, and if videos won't play even when you're online, start with why YouTube isn't working.
