PayPal Credit is a reusable line of credit that sits in your PayPal wallet, so you can choose it at checkout and pay over time instead of paying in full. In the US it's issued by Synchrony Bank with a 6-month no-interest offer on qualifying purchases; in the UK it's a regulated credit product from PayPal with a 4-month interest-free offer and instalment plans.
Here's the catch in the US. The 6-month offer is No Interest if paid in full, which isn't the same as interest-free. If any of that purchase is still unpaid when the 6 months end, interest is charged from the original purchase date. PayPal also warns that the minimum monthly payment may or may not pay off the promotional purchase by the end of the period, so paying only the minimum can leave you with the full back-dated bill.
US and UK PayPal Credit side by side
| As of October 2026 | US | UK |
|---|---|---|
| Who provides it | Synchrony Bank is the lender | PayPal, as a regulated credit product |
| Who can apply | US customers of legal age in their state | UK residents aged 18 or over, employed, with a good credit history and no recent bankruptcy |
| Credit check | An approved application is a hard inquiry | A soft credit check when you apply |
| Promotional offer | No Interest if paid in full in 6 months on qualifying purchases | Interest-free for 4 months on qualifying single transactions, plus instalment offers |
| Annual fee | None | None |
| Paying friends and family | Allowed, at the same fee as a debit or credit card | Not allowed, and no cash advances |
In the US you don't pick the format. If you're approved, you get either the PayPal Credit Card or the PayPal Credit digital line, based on your credit history. The digital line works wherever PayPal checkout is available, and PayPal stresses that the 6-month financing isn't an intro offer: it's an everyday benefit you can use again and again.
How a US purchase qualifies for 6 months
The rules are stricter than most people expect. Items count together only when they're in a single purchase, and separate transactions can't be combined to reach the minimum. The minimum is measured before shipping and tax, and offers don't apply to previous purchases, returns or exchanges. Smaller purchases still go on the line, they just get the standard rate, and you avoid interest on those by paying your full balance each month by the due date.
One trap you wouldn't guess: some merchants split a single order into several charges, for example when items ship separately. If a charge that posts to your account falls below the minimum, special financing may not be applied automatically.
- Check your email for a confirmation that the purchase qualified for special financing.
- Log in to PayPal, open your PayPal Credit account and look in the Special financing section once the purchase posts.
- If a qualifying purchase isn't listed there, contact PayPal Credit customer service to have it reviewed.
How the UK 4-month offer and instalments work
In the UK the interest-free offer applies automatically to single transactions at or above the minimum in one shopping basket, unless another offer such as an instalment plan applies. You can use it as many times as you like while you have available credit and your account is in good standing. You must keep making the minimum payment or the offer may be removed, and anything left after the 4 months moves to your standard variable rate.
Instalment offers are only available when you choose PayPal Credit at checkout, never on the card. They let you spread a larger purchase over a set monthly repayment for 6 to 48 months, always at a rate lower than your standard variable rate. You can run several offers at once up to your credit limit without reapplying. PayPal Credit also works in every currency PayPal supports, converting each purchase to pounds, and promotional offers apply whatever currency you pay in.
Where UK repayments go first
This is the part that catches UK customers out. You can't choose which purchase your payment clears. Your minimum is made up of any instalment payments due, a set share of the remaining balance, and any interest, charges and arrears. Anything you pay above the minimum is applied in this order:
- Instalment plan payments, highest interest rate first.
- Balances at your standard variable rate, with interest and fees cleared before the amount you borrowed.
- Promotional balances, such as a 4-month purchase that hasn't expired yet.
- Any other balances on your statement.
There's one exception. If a 4-month offer expires that month, your extra payment goes to it before your instalment plans. To avoid interest on a 4-month purchase, repay whatever's left of it in full during the month its interest-free period ends. When two offers share the same rate, the one expiring soonest is repaid first.
UK limits, fees and account rules
UK credit limit increases are offered, not requested. You become eligible after at least 6 months as a customer, with no arrears and some PayPal Credit use in the last 6 months, and you have to accept each offer yourself. PayPal can also lower your limit, and there's no option to keep the old one. Late payments and returned payments can each be charged a fee, but never more than one such fee in a statement period.

A few more rules worth knowing. You can't repay PayPal Credit with a credit card, and you can't use it to pay PayPal invoices or payment requests. Some business categories, including adult content, stored value cards and gambling, won't offer it at checkout. If you're declined, you can reapply 35 days after your last application, and you can withdraw within 14 days of signing the Credit Agreement. A business account holder needs a personal account to apply.
Applying for PayPal Credit
In the US you apply on the PayPal website or in the app with your date of birth, income after taxes and the last 4 digits of your Social Security number, and you'll know within seconds whether you've got the card or the digital line. In the UK you sign in or create a PayPal account, complete a short form, and once you accept the Credit Agreement the limit is linked to your account almost straight away.
My verdict on PayPal Credit
I'd use PayPal Credit for one planned purchase I know I can clear inside the offer window, with a reminder set for the month it ends. In the US, treat the 6 months as a hard deadline, because missing it brings back interest on the whole purchase from day one. In the UK, remember extra payments chase your highest-rate balances first, so clear an expiring 4-month purchase in its final month. Skip it if you'd only ever pay the minimum. For a smaller purchase you'd rather split without a credit line, here's how PayPal Pay in 4 works, and before you pay people with it in the US, check what PayPal charges to send and receive.
