Canva's image upscaler is the Upscale tool in the editor: select a photo, choose Edit, then Upscale under Tools, and Canva makes a blurry or pixelated image sharper at 4x or 16x on its own. As of October 2026 it's on every plan including Canva Free, but it only takes JPG or PNG files between 10 x 10 pixels and 25 megapixels, and each image can be upscaled once.
The catch: one upscale per image, and it reads the original, not your crop
Here's what trips people up. Canva only lets you upscale an image once. There's no second pass to squeeze out more sharpness, and if you run it on the wrong version you can't run it again on that image.
The second surprise is cropping. Upscale checks the original image size, not the crop you've made in your design. So if you've cropped a small section out of a photo and the upscale won't work, the tool is looking at the whole file, not the bit you can see. Canva's fix is simple:
- Download your cropped image.
- Upload it as a new file.
- Apply Upscale to the new upload.
Put those two rules together and the order you work in matters. I'd crop first, download, re-upload, and only then upscale, so your single upscale goes on the exact image you're going to publish.
Does upscaling use your AI allowance?
It depends on your plan. Canva classes Upscale as a Standard AI tool, and Standard tools are treated differently on free and paid plans (source: Canva Help Center).
| Plan | Does Upscale use AI allowance? | When it can stop working |
|---|---|---|
| Canva Free | Yes, every upscale draws from your allowance | When your AI allowance runs out, until it resets next month |
| Canva Pro, Teams, Business, Nonprofit | No, it doesn't draw from the monthly allowance | Fair use limits still apply |
This matters more than it looks. Canva has three AI quality tiers: Standard, Premium and Ultra. Premium is the default for most AI tools, Ultra is paid plans only and burns allowance faster, and Standard is the light one. When a paid plan hits its AI limit, Premium can become temporarily unavailable, but Standard stays available. So on a paid plan you can usually still upscale on a day when other AI tools are greyed out. On Canva Free, every tier becomes unavailable once you hit the limit, Upscale included.
How to upscale an image in Canva
On a desktop browser:
- Open your design.
- Select the image you want to upscale.
- Select Edit.
- Under Tools, select Upscale.
- Wait while Canva upscales the image automatically based on its size.
In the Canva mobile app it's almost the same: open the design, tap the image, tap Image Tools, then select Upscale.
You won't see a 4x or 16x option. Canva chooses the upscale level itself based on your image, so there's nothing to set. If you'd rather not open a design at all, Canva also has a standalone AI Image Upscaler page where you upload the image, enhance it, make any extra edits and download it as a JPG, PNG or PDF file.
The requirements and limits in one table
Most failed upscales come down to one of these rules. Here's what Canva says, and what I'd do about each one.
| Rule | What Canva says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| File type | JPG or PNG only; vector graphics aren't supported | Export the vector as a PNG, upload it, then upscale |
| Input size | Between 10 x 10 pixels and 25 megapixels | Shrink very large files before you upload them |
| Output size | Upscaled images can be up to 50 megapixels | Expect a big file, so check where you'll use it |
| How many times | Once per image | Crop and finalise first, then upscale |
| Faces and text | Results may vary | Zoom in and check eyes, teeth and lettering |
| Stock images | Improvement may be minimal | Skip it; they're usually high resolution already |
If you're also changing the size of the design itself, that's a different job. Upscaling adds detail to one image, while resizing changes the canvas. This walkthrough on resizing designs in Canva covers that side.

When Upscale isn't available or doesn't help
If the Upscale option won't appear or won't run, Canva's troubleshooting list says to check four things:
- The image is a JPG or PNG.
- You haven't already used Upscale on it.
- It meets the size requirements.
- On Canva Free, you've still got AI allowance left.
Then there's the frustrating one: the upscale works, but the image doesn't look much better. Canva says very small or heavily compressed images may show limited improvement, and the best results come from a higher quality source image. In practice, that means going back to the original file from your camera or phone rather than a screenshot or a copy that's been compressed along the way.
Upscale versus Canva's other photo fixes
Upscale only does one thing: it adds resolution. If the problem is something else in the photo, Canva's AI Image Upscaler page points to other tools in the editor.
- Magic Edit adds or replaces elements in an image from a written prompt.
- Magic Eraser brushes off unwanted objects.
- Magic Expand extends an image in any direction to fit a layout.
- BG Generator swaps the scene behind your subject; I've covered it in my guide to the Canva background generator.
Those three Magic tools are marked Pro on that page, while Upscale is a standard feature on Canva Free, Pro, Teams, Business and Nonprofit. Canva also lists a separate Video Upscaler among its photo and video features, so don't expect the image tool to touch video. For filters, colour grading and the rest of the basics, my guide on editing photos in Canva goes through them.
My verdict on Canva's image upscaler
I'd use it for exactly what it's built for: rescuing a low-resolution JPG or PNG you can't replace, like an old headshot or a small product photo. It's quick, there's nothing to configure, and on a paid plan it doesn't eat into your AI allowance. I wouldn't expect miracles on tiny, heavily compressed files, faces or text. Treat your one upscale like a final step, crop first, and keep the original safe in case you need to start again from a fresh upload.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose between 4x and 16x when I upscale in Canva?
No. Canva automatically selects 4x or 16x based on your image, and there's no manual setting.
Why can't I upscale a vector or SVG image in Canva?
Upscale only supports JPG and PNG images. Export the vector as a PNG, upload that file and run Upscale on it.
Why is Upscale greyed out on my Canva Free account?
On Canva Free every upscale uses your AI allowance, so once you've used it up the tool stays unavailable until your allowance resets.
What file types can I download an upscaled image as?
Canva's AI Image Upscaler page says you can download the upscaled image as a JPG, PNG or PDF file.
