The TikTok algorithm recommends videos by predicting what you're likely to enjoy from three kinds of signal: your interactions, information about the content, and information about you and your device. As of October 2026 TikTok says your interactions, including how long you spend watching, generally count most in the For You feed, but it doesn't publish a formula and the weight of each factor changes over time.
The catch: there's no fixed recipe to copy
TikTok says each factor can play a larger or smaller role, and how important each one is can change over time. It also weighs things differently feed by feed. In For You, Following and LIVE, interactions such as watch time usually count most. In Friends, it's interactions such as the number of likes and comments. In Search, it's content information, meaning how well a video matches what you typed.
There's a second layer most people miss. In certain recommender systems, TikTok also looks at people who seem to share your interests. Its example: if User A likes videos 1, 2 and 3, and User B likes videos 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, the system may predict User A will like videos 4 and 5 too. So part of what you see is shaped by people you've never met.

How a brand new account gets its first videos
When you sign up, TikTok may invite you to pick categories of interest, like pets or travel, to start your For You, Explore and LIVE feeds. Skip that and it starts by showing recent posts that are popular with others. For that first set, TikTok looks for popular content suitable for a broad audience and content influenced by your location and language settings, and it suggests popular creators to follow.
From there, everything you do becomes a signal. Your interactions help the system predict what you're likely to enjoy and what you might prefer to skip. If you don't follow anyone or have no friends on TikTok, your Friends Tab and Following feed may stay empty.
The three signals behind the For You feed
| Signal | Examples TikTok gives for For You |
|---|---|
| User interactions | Content you like, share, comment on, and watch in full or skip, plus accounts of followers you follow back |
| Content information | Sounds, hashtags, number of video views, and the country the content was published in |
| User information | Device settings, language preference, location, time zone and day, and device type |
Each system picks from a large pool of eligible content and ranks it by how likely you are to be interested. Because everyone's signals differ, For You, Following, Friends and LIVE stay unique to each person, even when two people follow the same creators.
What weighs most in each TikTok feed
| Feed or feature | What TikTok says usually weighs most |
|---|---|
| For You | User interactions, which may include time spent watching a video |
| Following | User interactions, which may include time spent watching a video |
| Friends | User interactions, which may include the number of likes and comments on a video |
| LIVE | User interactions, which may include time spent watching a specific LIVE |
| Search | Content information, such as how well the content matches the term entered |
| Notifications | User interactions, such as the number of notifications you receive and open |
| Comments you're shown | Content information, such as the comment's language and how many likes it gets |
| Account suggestions | Content information, such as the number of mutual connections |
For LIVE, TikTok also lists Gifts sent, the number of LIVE views and likes, and the creator's follower count as inputs. For search, your past search behaviour and the sound used both feed in.
Why random videos still turn up
TikTok deliberately mixes things up. It says it aims to diversify your feeds with new creators and content, which is why you'll see videos in For You and LIVE that don't seem to match your interests. It typically doesn't recommend content you've already seen. In your Friends Tab and Following feed, it generally won't show two posts in a row from the same creator, unless that's the only account you follow.
Safety rules shape the feed too. TikTok doesn't recommend content in For You that's allowed on the platform but doesn't meet its For You eligibility standards, and its rules aim to interrupt repeated recommendations of content that may be fine seen occasionally but could lead to a negative experience if seen repeatedly, such as extreme fitness or dieting. Its safety teams may also review content as it rises in popularity. If you're a creator wondering why a video stalled, here's what it means when TikTok marks a video ineligible for recommendation.
See why TikTok showed you a post
- In the TikTok app, tap the Share button on the side of a post in your For You feed.
- Tap Why this post.
TikTok lists reasons such as: you commented on, liked, shared or watched similar posts; the post is popular in your country; it was created recently; it's a longer video and you seem to enjoy longer videos; or you follow the creator. From there you can tap Adjust your For You to tailor the feed.

Ways to steer what TikTok recommends
- Like: helps TikTok suggest similar content.
- Not interested: tells TikTok to show you less content like that post.
- Manage topics: adjust how much of each topic appears in For You.
- Filter keywords: remove content with specific words, their variations and hashtags from your For You, Following, Friends, LIVE and STEM feeds, with an option to let AI filter similar words such as synonyms.
- Unfollow: removes that account's posts from your Following feed or Friends Tab.
- Dislike for comments: tells TikTok you're not interested in a comment.
- Remove suggested accounts: takes an account off your suggested list.
There's also a full refresh, which shows you popular content and rebuilds For You from how you react to it. It can't be undone and only affects For You, not your Following feed, profile, inbox or ads. I've covered that step by step in my guide on how to reset your TikTok algorithm.
In the EU and Kazakhstan, TikTok says you can also turn off personalised feeds. For You then becomes a Popular feed serving popular content from your region and internationally, and your Following and Friends feeds may switch to chronological order.
My verdict on the TikTok algorithm
Stop looking for a trick. TikTok's own explanation comes down to this: what you watch, like, share, comment on and skip counts for most, and the weighting keeps shifting. If your feed's gone stale, use Not interested and Manage topics before you reach for a full refresh. If you're a creator, the lesson is the same from the other side: make videos people watch to the end and want to talk about. And if you're new to the lingo, here's what FYP means on TikTok.
