Small UK teams that mainly need staff records, holiday and absence tracking should start with the small-team HR tools. Growing employers who want HR and payroll in one system should look at the all-in-one HR and payroll platforms built for UK organisations. Larger or international teams can add global platforms with a UK payroll offer. Ten options follow in no particular order.
UK employers shopping for HR software usually want three things from one system: staff records, holiday and absence tracking, and a clean hand-off to payroll. Where the tools differ is how far past that they go, into payroll itself, health and safety, company devices or recruitment.
The ten below are listed alphabetically, and every description comes from each vendor's own website, read as of Oct 2026. If you're a very small team and mainly need leave tracking, my guide to holiday tracker apps may be all you need.
UK HR software side by side
I checked the free plan column on each vendor's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or an open source edition. Trial only means it names a time-limited free trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the vendor's own site before you sign up.

What the UK HR vendor pages lead with
- BrightHR's UK page is titled 'HR, Payroll, Health & Safety Services For UK Businesses', so health and safety comes in the same bundle as the HR system.
- Zelt describes itself as all-in-one HR software for UK businesses, and Cezanne HR sells cloud HRIS and payroll for UK and global organisations.
- Factorial's page title now reads 'The AI for Business', a sign that some HR vendors are repositioning as broader business software.
- Ciphr says its central HR product is ideal for UK organisations with 200 to 2,000 employees, a useful size marker you won't find on most pages.
Small-team HR or HR and payroll in one system?
This is the real choice for most UK employers. Small-team tools cover records, holiday, absence, onboarding and performance, and hand payroll to your accountant or a separate payroll package through an integration. All-in-one platforms run payroll themselves or offer a managed payroll service, so there's one set of employee data. The second saves rekeying; the first is simpler to start with.
Posting vacancies on your own WordPress site is another route, and job board plugins for WordPress compares the plugins that make it work.
Checks for a UK HR system
- Holiday and absence: can staff request leave from their phone, and can managers see who's off at a glance?
- Payroll hand-off: does it run UK payroll, offer a managed service or integrate with the payroll you already use?
- Employment law support: some UK tools bundle advice lines, templates and HR insurance; others leave that to you.
- Size fit: check the employee range a vendor quotes, because a tool built for 20 people feels very different from one built for 2,000.
- Data and security: ask where your employee data is held and how access is controlled.
If sickness and lateness are the main headache, my guide to absence management software goes deeper on that one job.

My plain advice for UK employers choosing HR software
Start from the size of your team and who runs payroll today. If you're small and an accountant runs payroll, a small-team HR tool with good holiday and absence tracking is usually enough. Once payroll comes in-house or headcount climbs into the hundreds, an all-in-one HR and payroll platform saves you keeping two sets of employee data in step. Book demos with two tools from the right group and ask each to show you a holiday request, a sick day and a new starter, start to finish.
For a wider list that isn't UK-specific, my roundup of HR software for small businesses covers more options.

Frequently asked questions
What HR software do small UK businesses use?
Most start with a small-team HR tool that handles staff records, holiday and absence tracking, onboarding and performance, and hands payroll to an accountant or a separate payroll package.
Is there HR software with payroll built in for UK companies?
Yes. Several platforms here run UK payroll in the same system as HR, and some also offer a managed payroll service.
Does UK HR software include employment law advice?
Some does. At least one vendor on this list bundles 24/7 employment law advice, document templates and HR insurance with its software. Most others focus on the software alone.
Can HR software track holiday and sickness?
Yes, it's one of the core jobs. Staff request leave in an app, managers approve it, and the system keeps a record of sickness and lateness alongside holiday.
Is there free HR software in the UK?
None of the ten names a free plan on the page I read, but several offer a free trial. The free plan column shows which, as of Oct 2026.
