Etsy Payments: Enrolment, Deposit Schedules and Payment Account Reserves

Etsy Payments is how you get paid on Etsy: buyers pay by card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and more, the funds land in your Etsy Payment account, and Etsy sends them to your bank on your deposit schedule, which for new sellers is weekly, every Monday. You enrol as part of opening your shop, with a residential address, a valid bank account in an eligible country and a credit, debit or reloadable prepaid card.

Here's the catch. Your sales don't always reach your bank when you expect. Making your first sale on Etsy is on Etsy's list of reasons for a Payment account reserve, which holds back part of each new physical-item sale, and Etsy Support can't tell you the specific reason a reserve was placed. Change your bank details and there's a 5-day hold on funds in your Payment account. And if your balance is under the daily minimum for your currency, there's no deposit that day.

These rules come from Etsy's US help pages as of October 2026. Sellers in other countries may see local versions. Etsy says payment processing fees vary by country, so for what each sale costs you, see how much Etsy takes from each sale.

What you need to enrol in Etsy Payments

  • A residential address and a valid bank account in an eligible country. Etsy can't send sale funds to a PayPal account or to a credit or debit card.
  • A valid credit, debit or reloadable prepaid card. A non-reloadable prepaid card can't be your only or primary card, though you can still pay your balance manually with one.
  • If you're a new seller in Germany, Austria or the Netherlands, a credit or debit card on your account. That rule's been in place since May 8, 2025.

You'll also pick Individual or Business for legal and tax purposes. Choose Individual if you sell as a person and don't have a registered entity or a business taxpayer ID. Choose Business if you've registered a legal entity with a taxpayer ID. Etsy then verifies your identity, and if it can't from what you've given, it asks for more. Skip that step and Etsy may refuse you access until you provide it.

How Etsy verifies your bank account

Where your bank account isHow Etsy verifies it
In the USThrough Plaid, a third-party service
You're required to use PayoneerWhile you set up Payoneer
Outside the US, not on PayoneerWith test deposits

One timing rule helps new shops: if your shop opened after March 1, 2022, you can add and verify your bank account after your first sale.

Sellers in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, Georgia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Peru, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates sign up for Etsy Payments with a Payoneer Payment Account, and Etsy says sellers in India may be able to use Etsy Payments. How buyers pay, and why PayPal sales skip PayPal

With Etsy Payments, buyers can choose credit cards, debit or bank cards, Etsy gift cards and credits, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Klarna is offered in Australia, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada, Klarna Invoice in Germany, and iDEAL in the Netherlands. Whatever they pick, the funds go to your Etsy Payment account.

PayPal is the one people get wrong. A buyer paying with PayPal doesn't send anything to your PayPal account: the sale lands in your Etsy Payment account, so there's no separate PayPal fee and you're not tracking takings in two places. If that buyer files a dispute through PayPal, Etsy works on your behalf to resolve it, and you don't take part directly.

When you get paid: your deposit schedule

Every sale goes to your Payment account on Etsy first. Then, on your deposit schedule, your available funds go to your bank. New sellers start on weekly deposits, every Monday. To change it:

  1. On Etsy.com, go to Shop Manager.
  2. Open Finances, then Payments Settings.
  3. Under Deposit schedule, pick daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly.

In the Etsy Seller app it's More, then Finances, then Payment settings. Once a standard deposit's sent, Etsy says it can take 1-5 business days to appear, depending on your bank, and a deposit day that falls on a weekend or holiday moves to the next business day. The amount can also change before it's sent, if new sales, refunds or fees hit your balance in between.

Daily deposit minimums by currency

Daily deposits come with a floor. As of October 2026, Etsy won't send a deposit on any day your amount available for deposit is below the minimum for your bank account currency. These are Etsy's daily minimums as of October 2026:

Bank account currencyEtsy daily deposit minimum, as of October 2026
Australian dollarAUD 25.00
Canadian dollarCAD 25.00
EuroEUR 20.00
British poundGBP 15.00
US dollar25.00
New Zealand dollarNZD 25.00
Swiss francCHF 15.00

Some countries also charge a deposit fee when a deposit is above the minimum but below a fee threshold. Etsy's suggestion is to move to a less frequent deposit schedule, so your balance has time to pass the threshold.

Payment account reserves: why Etsy holds part of a sale

A Payment account reserve means a percentage of each new sale of a physical item is held back and won't be available for deposit within the standard processing time. Sales of digital items aren't held. Etsy shows the holding time and the percentage in your Payment account, and both can vary by account. Etsy will also email you if a reserve's placed.

  • A sudden sharp increase in orders or refunds.
  • Orders consistently missing tracking information or tracking events.
  • Orders not shipped on time.
  • A recent increase in refunds.
  • Making your first sale on Etsy.

That last one catches new sellers out, because it applies before you've had a chance to build a track record. Etsy says most reserves are removed within 90 days, but Support agents can't remove one for you. Star Sellers don't get a reserve at all.

How to get reserved funds released

  1. Add tracking to the order. If Etsy can confirm the parcel's in transit, the reserved funds are released straight away.
  2. If you don't add tracking, wait out the default holding period shown in your Payment account.
  3. Check the release date in Shop Manager under Finances, Payment account, then the Pending tab in Recent activities.
  4. Expect released funds to become available at 6pm ET on the day they're released.

The catch inside the catch: Etsy can't always confirm tracking for some carriers, and if it can't see the order in transit, the funds stay reserved for the full period. Don't mark an order shipped before you've dropped it with the carrier either, which is one of Etsy's own tips for avoiding a reserve.

You can also spot reserved orders by the Order in reserve badge in Orders, or download your monthly statement CSV, where the Status column shows whether a sale's in reserve and the Availability Date column gives an estimated release date.

While a reserve's on, everyday charges keep coming out of your current balance: buyer refunds, fees, shipping labels bought on Etsy and Etsy Ads. Reserved funds sit in your pending balance, and if your current balance goes negative, they're applied as they're released.

When you're ready for more, Etsy Plus is a sensible follow-up.

My verdict on Etsy Payments

It's the way you get paid on Etsy, so the job is making it pay you on time. Get your bank details right first time, because every change costs you a 5-day hold. If you're new, be ready for a reserve and plan your stock around it, then add tracking on every physical order so funds release as soon as Etsy sees the parcel moving. Pick a deposit schedule that clears your currency's minimum without leaving you waiting longer than you need. If you're still setting up, start with how to sell on Etsy.

Frequently asked questions

When does Etsy pay you?

Sales go to your Etsy Payment account first, then to your bank on your deposit schedule. New sellers are paid weekly, every Monday, and you can switch to daily, biweekly or monthly in Payments Settings.

Why is Etsy holding my payment?

You may have a Payment account reserve. Etsy's triggers include your first sale, a sharp rise in orders or refunds, missing tracking and late shipping. Changing your bank details also adds a 5-day hold.

How do I get my Etsy reserve released?

Add tracking. If Etsy can confirm the order's in transit, the reserved funds are released straight away and become available at 6pm ET that day.

Do PayPal payments on Etsy go to my PayPal account?

No. They go to your Etsy Payment account, so there's no separate PayPal fee.

What is the minimum Etsy deposit?

It depends on your bank account currency. As of October 2026, Etsy's daily minimum is 25.00 for US dollar accounts and GBP 15.00 for British pound accounts.
