Discord Orbs are rewards you earn by completing Quests, and sometimes through select promotions. You spend them in the Orbs Shop on things like Nitro credits, a profile badge and avatar decorations, and you don't need a payment method to use them.
Here's the catch. Orbs aren't a currency you can top up. You can't buy them, gift them, transfer them or turn them into cash, and the two Nitro bonuses, the 1.2x multiplier and the 250-a-month drop, both leave out Nitro Basic. Anyone offering to sell you Orbs is breaking Discord's Orbs Terms, and it's your account on the line if you buy.

How to earn Orbs
Quests are the only steady source. On desktop or in your browser:
- Find a Quest in the Quest bar at the bottom left, or in Quest Home under Discover then Quests.
- Accept the Quest and complete it.
- Claim your Orbs.
- Check your balance at the top right of Quest Home or the Shop.
On mobile, tap your avatar, then Settings then Quests, or tap your avatar then Orbs Balance. I've kept the Quest side short here, because how each Quest type works is a page of its own.
If you've spotted Orbs you don't remember earning, linking a Riot Games account (VALORANT or League of Legends) or a Battle.net account can add an Orbs reward. That's the usual explanation for a surprise balance.
The Nitro bonuses, and who misses out
Since 8 May 2026, Orbs from Quests carry a 1.2x multiplier for Nitro subscribers. That includes trial and gifted Nitro, but not Nitro Basic and not Nitro through credits.
Some Nitro members are also in a Monthly Orbs Drop experiment, which gives 250 Orbs each month. The first drop can take up to a week to arrive, and you need an active, paid Nitro subscription on desktop or browser in good standing. Gifted Nitro, Nitro credits, Basic, Classic, suspended subscriptions and partner trials are all left out. You can only see it on desktop or web, under Nitro Home and Earn monthly Nitro Rewards.
There's also an Orb Challenges experiment on desktop and browser, which gives Orbs for taking a specific action. Anything you buy with Orbs doesn't count towards a purchase challenge.
What you can buy with Orbs
Open the Shop and go to the Orbs Shop tab. On mobile it's under the Shop menu as Orbs Exclusives. You'll find:
- Nitro credits, which give you time-limited Nitro
- A profile badge
- A special Avatar Decoration and Profile Effect
- Select items from the main Shop catalogue
An item you can buy with Orbs shows an Orbs price once you have enough. If you don't, you'll see the normal price instead. If the badge isn't your thing later, my guide to hiding Discord badges explains what you can and can't remove.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
What Orbs can't buy
- Gifts for other people
- Partner-branded collab items in the Shop
- Recurring Nitro or Boost subscriptions
When you can lose Orbs
Earned Orbs don't expire, but they aren't guaranteed forever. Discord says it may adjust the system, and you can lose your Orbs if you lose access to your account, for example through a ban or a hacked account. Orb purchases are final, so think before you spend on something you might not keep.
Selling or trading Orbs breaks the Discord Orbs Terms and should be reported. If someone in a server or DM is offering Orbs for cash, report them and walk away.
My verdict on Orbs
Orbs are a fair trade if you'd watch a trailer or play a game anyway. Treat them as a bonus, not a wallet. If you want Nitro without paying, save up for Nitro credits, and if you're on Nitro Basic, don't expect the bonus Orbs.
