Shopify Balance is Shopify's free financial account for store owners, built into your Shopify admin, and Shopify is clear that it's not a bank account. It's open to US merchants who use Shopify Payments, with no account fees or minimum balance, and as of October 2026 Shopify lists a 2.52% daily earnings rate on Basic, Grow and Advanced plans and 3.54% on Plus.
There are two catches. First, only US merchants on Shopify Payments qualify, so if you use another payment provider, Balance isn't open to you. Second, that earnings rate is a reward Shopify pays, not interest, and Shopify says the rate is variable and subject to change without notice. These are Shopify's US terms, and as Balance is US-only, UK, Australian and Canadian readers won't find it on their local Shopify site. This is information, not financial advice.
What a Shopify Balance account includes
Here's what Shopify lists on its Balance page, as of October 2026:
- No account fees. No monthly, annual or ACH transfer fees and no minimum balance. Shopify doesn't charge withdrawal fees, though ATM operators might.
- Up to 6 free dedicated accounts to separate your earnings, expenses and savings.
- Free same-day ACH if you send by 1 pm ET, plus auto-transfer rules that split your payouts for you.
- Transfers in and out with your account and routing numbers, or through PayPal, Venmo and Cash App. Limits may apply.
- Sales tax set aside automatically, and a sync with your accounting software.
- Dashboards, filters and reports on your finances, and live chat support through the Help Center.
How fast Shopify payouts reach Balance
This is the feature most store owners notice first. On the Basic, Shopify or Advanced plans, payouts land in Balance within 5 business days, and Shopify says most merchants receive them within 1 to 3 business days. On Plus, payouts arrive the next business day by default. Shopify says that's up to 7 days faster than a bank, and it notes payout speed may change without notice. Plus stores also get daily transfer limits customised to the business, up to $500,000.
Shopify Balance vs a traditional bank
Shopify puts its own comparison on the page, using public data from select business accounts at the three largest US banks by assets:
| Feature | Shopify Balance | Traditional banks, per Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly fees | No monthly or same-day ACH transfer fees | $10+ average monthly fees |
| Minimum balance | None | May be as high as $5,000 |
| Opening an account | Sign up online in minutes | In-person application that can take weeks to approve |
| Payouts | As fast as the next business day | May take up to 7 business days |
| Sales tax | Set aside automatically | Manual, complex tax integrations |
Bear in mind it's Shopify's table, written to make Balance look good. The fee and minimum balance rows are the ones that matter most to a small store, and they're the strongest part of the case.
The earnings rate in plain English
Every Balance account earns a cash incentive on its daily closing balance, weekends included. Shopify lists 2.52% on Basic, Grow and Advanced plans and 3.54% on Plus, with no minimum balance and no limit on how much you can earn, and you can withdraw at any time. The reward accrues daily, compounds, and is paid monthly as a credit to your Balance account. Shopify's calculator uses a $15,000 example and assumes no rate changes, which is exactly the assumption you shouldn't make: the rate is variable and Shopify says it was accurate as of October 27, 2026.
The Balance Visa card
Balance comes with a Balance Visa card, connected directly to your store. Shopify lists 2% cashback on eligible purchases, up to $2,000 in cashback per calendar year, and you can spend wherever Visa is accepted and withdraw cash at ATMs. For security, you can lock your card from your desktop browser or the mobile app, and SMS fraud alerts ask you to confirm or deny flagged transactions. The card is powered by Stripe and issued by Celtic Bank.
Is the cash in Balance protected?
Shopify says all Balance accounts are eligible for pass-through FDIC insurance up to $250,000 through Fifth Third Bank, Members FDIC, if the deposits meet certain requirements. That cover is per depositor, per financial institution. Shopify also states that neither Stripe nor Shopify is an FDIC insured institution, and FDIC cover only protects against the failure of an FDIC insured bank. In other words, the protection comes from the bank holding the funds, not from Shopify.

Balance sits inside Shopify Finance alongside Shopify Credit, a pay-in-full Visa business card with up to 3% cashback and 10 months to pay your statement balance, Shopify Bill Pay, and Shopify Tax. If it's funding you're after rather than an account, that's Shopify Capital, a different product altogether.
My verdict
Shopify Balance is a handy parking place for your store payouts: no account fees, faster access to your sales and a reward on what sits there. I'd use it for the day-to-day running of the store and keep your main business bank account separate, belt and braces. Don't move everything over for the earnings rate alone, because Shopify can change it without notice. And as it only works with Shopify Payments, check what Shopify charges on your plan before you commit to the whole stack.
