To change your birthday on X (Twitter), go to your profile, tap Edit profile, open the Birth date section and select the new day, month and year, then save. In the same place you can choose who sees your birth year and who sees your birthday, separately. X says you can only change those visibility settings a few times, so pick carefully.
Most people come here for one of two reasons: they want to fix a wrong date, or they want to hide their age. You can do both from Edit profile. Here's exactly how, what each visibility option means, and what X uses your birth date for behind the scenes.
How to change your birthday on X, step by step
- Sign in to x.com or open the X app on iPhone or Android.
- Go to your profile and click or tap Edit profile.
- Click or tap the Birth date section.
- Select or change your birth Day, Month and Year.
- Review the two visibility settings: one for your birth year, one for your birth day and month.
- Click or tap Save.
On the web you change visibility by clicking the visibility icon next to each field. In the app, it's labelled Who sees this.
X adds one rule here that matters: the birth date must belong to the person who runs the account. If you manage a brand account, that's worth knowing before you type anything in.
Who can see your birthday: the five options
X lets you control your birth year and your birth day and month separately, with the same five choices for each:
| Setting | Who can see it on your profile |
|---|---|
| Public | Anyone, anywhere, straight away |
| Your followers | Only people who follow you |
| People you follow | Only people you follow |
| You follow each other | Only people who follow you and whom you follow |
| Only you | Nobody but you |
So you could show your birthday to followers for the good wishes, and keep your birth year to Only you. That's the combination I'd suggest for most people who use X for business.
The defaults you might not know about
- Your birth date is private by default. X's Help Center says so on its visibility settings page.
- Anyone who added a birth date after January 2022 has visibility set to Only you by default.
- If you're under 18, X sets your birth year visibility to Only you. You can change it once you turn 18.
- You can only change visibility a few times. X doesn't give a number, so don't use it as a switch you flip back and forth.
How to remove your birthday from X
If you'd rather not have a birth date on your profile at all:
- Go to your profile and click or tap Edit profile.
- Open the Birth date section.
- In the app, tap Remove birth date.
- On the web, set all three dropdowns back to their defaults (Day, Month and Year). X says you need to clear all three fields on the web.
- Save your changes.
What X uses your birth date for
This is the part worth reading before you decide. According to X's Help Center, your birth date does two jobs:
- It tells X you're old enough to use the service. That's why X asks for the real date of the account holder.
- It personalises your experience. X says it uses your birth date to show you more relevant content, including ads.
So even if your birthday is set to Only you, X itself still uses it. Visibility settings control what other people see on your profile, not what X knows. If privacy is your main worry, my X privacy audit walks through the other settings worth checking.
Everything else in Edit profile while you're there
The same Edit profile screen is where you change the rest of your profile. X's Help Center lists the recommended sizes and limits:
| Field | What X says |
|---|---|
| Header photo (banner) | Recommended 1500x500 pixels |
| Profile photo | Recommended 400x400 pixels |
| Bio | Maximum 160 characters |
| Name, location, website | Editable, and public |
| Birth date | Editable, with its own visibility settings |
Most of what you put on your profile is always public, X says, including your bio, location, website and picture. Birth date is one of the few fields that gets its own visibility control. For image sizing in detail, see my guide to X profile picture size.

Your profile is more public than you think
One more line from X's Help Center is worth keeping in mind while you edit. The words you write in your X profile or public posts may be indexed by Google and other search engines, so your profile can show up when someone searches those terms. That's useful for a business account, because a clear bio helps people find you. It's also a reason never to put your full date of birth in your bio, where the visibility settings can't protect it.
Running more than one profile is covered in switching accounts on X.
My advice
Fix the date if it's wrong, because X uses it to decide what you're old enough to see. Then set your birth year to Only you and your birthday to whatever feels right. Your age rarely helps you on X, but a few birthday messages from your followers never hurt. And because X limits how often you can change visibility, set it once and leave it.
