To cast TikTok to your TV, connect your phone and TV to the same Wi-Fi network, open the video in TikTok, tap the Share button, then tap Cast to TV and pick your TV. TikTok says it casts to devices that support Google Chromecast built-in, from an Android phone running Android 6.0 or later or an iPhone running iOS 12.0 or later.
Watching TikTok on a big screen is great for family scrolling, showing a client a campaign, or just giving your neck a rest. The Cast to TV option is tucked away in the share menu, though, and it depends on your TV supporting the right kind of casting. Here's what TikTok's own help says you need, and how to get it working.
What you need before you start
| Requirement | What TikTok says |
|---|---|
| Android phone | Running Android 6.0 or later |
| iPhone | Running iOS 12.0 or later |
| TV or streaming device | Must support Google Chromecast built-in |
| Network | Your phone and TV on the same Wi-Fi network |
That Chromecast point is the one that trips people up. If your TV doesn't have Chromecast built in, and you don't have a Chromecast device plugged into it, the Cast to TV option won't find it.
Casting works from the TikTok phone app, one video at a time. You pick the video on your phone first, then send it to the screen, so your phone stays the remote control for what plays.
How to cast TikTok to your TV step by step
- Make sure your phone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the TikTok app and go to the video you want to watch on the TV.
- Tap the Share button, then tap Cast to TV at the bottom. You may need to scroll to the right to see it.
- On an iPhone, if it's your first time casting, allow TikTok access to your local network when asked.
- Choose your TV from the list. If it isn't there, tap the Refresh button.
How to stop casting or switch TVs
- To stop casting: tap the casting device banner at the bottom of the screen, then tap to disconnect.
- To change TVs: tap the same banner at the bottom and choose a different TV.
When Cast to TV can't find your TV
TikTok's help doesn't include a long troubleshooting list for casting, so these checks come straight from its requirements:
- Check the Wi-Fi. Your phone and TV need to be on the same network. A phone that's dropped onto mobile data won't see the TV.
- Tap Refresh in the TV list. TikTok suggests this if your TV doesn't show up.
- Check local network access on iPhone. If you said no to the local network prompt the first time, TikTok can't find devices on your network, so check TikTok's local network permission in your iPhone settings.
- Check your phone's software version. Android 6.0 or later, or iOS 12.0 or later.
- Check your TV supports Chromecast built-in. If it doesn't, a Chromecast device plugged into the TV is the usual workaround.
If videos stutter once they're on the TV, the problem is more likely your connection than the cast itself. My guide to clearing the TikTok cache is a good first step if the app has been slow generally.
Other ways to get social video on the big screen
Casting works video by video from your phone, which is handy but not quite the same as a dedicated TV app. If your household watches Reels too, I've covered the options in my guide to Instagram for TV.
Why casting helps a business
Casting is handy for something less obvious than entertainment: reviewing content. Watching your own TikToks on a TV shows you things a phone hides, like text that sits too close to the edge, captions that are hard to read, or a shot that looks soft. If you run social for a business, cast a week of your posts in a team meeting and watch them as a viewer would. It's a quick way to spot what isn't landing.
Casting other apps works in much the same way, as YouTube TV on Chromecast explains.
