A citizenship test app helps you study for the knowledge test in your new country, with practice questions, flashcards and mock interviews. Apps are country-specific, so pick one built for your test and the right version of it. Ten apps for the US, Australia and Canada follow, in no particular order.
The biggest mistake isn't choosing the wrong app. It's studying the wrong question list. In the United States the civics test changed for applications filed from late 2025, and some app listings still describe only the older version.
The apps below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the provider's own App Store listing, read this week. If you're weighing up citizenship elsewhere, my guide on how to qualify for Italian citizenship covers a different route.
Citizenship test apps at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each provider's own App Store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version, a free tier of questions, free membership or free listing. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, even where there's a download button or a button inviting you to start, so check the provider's own page before you sign up.

What USCIS says about the 2025 civics test
According to USCIS, anyone who files Form N-400 on or after Oct. 20, 2025 takes the 2025 civics test. It's an oral test of 20 questions from a list of 128, and you must answer 12 correctly to pass. The officer stops once you've answered 12 correctly or 9 incorrectly.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If you filed before that date, you take the 2008 test instead: up to 10 questions from a list of 100, with 6 correct answers needed. That's why the version an app covers matters so much. Check the listing names the version on your paperwork.
What Australia's Home Affairs department says about apps
The Department of Home Affairs in Australia says all test questions are based on the Our Common Bond booklet, and it offers an official practice test designed to look and feel like the real one. It also says it doesn't endorse or recommend external courses or apps you have to buy.
That's a fair warning worth repeating. Treat any app as extra practice on top of the official booklet and the official practice test, never as a replacement for them.
How to study for any citizenship test
- Find your country's official study guide and read it once.
- Check which version of the test applies to you.
- Use an app for short daily question sessions.
- Practise answering out loud if your test or interview is spoken.
- Take full mock tests in the last week before your appointment.
The British version of the test has its own roundup of Life in the UK Test apps.
What to look for in a listing
- The right country and version. For the US, look for the 2025 question list of 128 if you filed recently.
- Official source material. The listing should name the official guide it's based on.
- Audio and speaking practice. Useful where the test is oral.
- Your languages. Some apps explain questions in several languages.

My plain advice on citizenship test apps
Start with your government's own free materials, confirm which test version you'll sit, then add one app that matches it for daily practice. If your interview is spoken, rehearse out loud, because knowing an answer and saying it calmly to an officer aren't the same thing.
