How To Qualify For Italian Citizenship?

Do you want to fulfill your lifelong dream of residing in Italy but are unsure how to do so? Well, there are typically two ways to have an unforgettable experience in this Country.

The first is to obtain a tourist visa and create a travel plan. It will allow you to stay in the country for a maximum of 3 months. However, if you want to stay here for the long term, it might not be a feasible option.

In that case, you can go for the second option, i.e., becoming an Italian Citizen. You can get assistance from Italian Citizenship experts as they can guide you through the process. The professionals can further ease the procedure so you can make your dream come true as quickly as possible.

That being said, letโ€™s learn about a few citizenship qualifications.

How Can You Obtain Italian Citizenship?

There are three ways to become an Italian citizen: Citizenship by Marriage, Citizenship by Descent (Jure Sanguinis), and Naturalization. Italian citizenship can be acquired more quickly by marriage or descent than through Naturalization, which typically takes more than ten years. So, in this article, weโ€™ll focus on the two methods.

  • Citizenship By Marriage

Italian Citizenship Law No. 91 of 1992, Articles 5 to 8, covers citizenship acquired by civil union or marriage. Getting Italian citizenship through a wedding is also referred to as โ€œJure Matrimonii.โ€

After two years of marriage or a civil union, a non-Italian spouse of an Italian citizen may apply for Italian citizenship as long as the couple lives in Italy. The waiting period is one year if the couple has children who are 18 or younger.

If a couple is living abroad, the non-Italian spouse cannot petition for Italian citizenship by marriage until three years have passed after the civil union or marriage took place. When kids are involved, this is cut down to 18 months.

In addition, the candidate for Italian citizenship must possess sufficient proficiency in the language and get a B1 level certification, the accomplishment of which must be attested by MIUR or MAECI.

  • Citizenship By Descent

One of the simplest methods to become a citizen of Italy is through Jure Sanguinis, sometimes referred to as citizenship by descent (by blood). Italy has friendly citizenship laws and regards people of Italian ancestry as โ€œfamily.โ€ Italy frequently permits people with Italian ancestry to claim citizenship by descent.

However, you must demonstrate that your right to claim Italian citizenship was transmitted from an ancestor born in Italy. Due to this complexity, you must meet the prerequisites listed below.

  • The applicant must have been born to parents who are either Italian citizens or who have the โ€œjure sanguinisโ€ right to Italian citizenship.
  • The applicant must be of direct blood ancestry, and at least one of the applicantโ€™s most senior Italian-born grandparents must not have naturalized as a citizen of another nation prior to the birth of the next child in the applicantโ€™s bloodline.
  • The applicantโ€™s mother was Italian, and the child was born after January 1, 1948.

The Bottom Line

Availing of Italian citizenship is easy, provided you work with a qualified lawyer. They will help you fill out the application and qualify for citizenship. So make sure to work with one.
