At 20k followers in India, Instagram still doesn't pay you for followers, but you've cleared both follower bars Meta publishes: 500 for Gifts and 10,000 for live badges. India is on the Gifts country list, so your income at 20k comes from Gifts, badges, Subscriptions if they show in your dashboard, and paid brand partnerships.
That's a real shift from 10k. It's easy to miss half of these, because the settings live in different menus. So this page is the switch-on guide, with what each tool pays on and the traps that stop the money arriving.
Every rule and figure on this page comes from Meta's own Help Center pages, read as of October 2026.
The two follower bars you've already passed
| Tool | Follower bar | Other rules |
|---|---|---|
| Gifts on reels | 500 | Professional account, 18 or older, India is eligible |
| Badges on live | 10,000 | Professional account, 18 or older |
| Subscriptions | None published | Only if it shows in your professional dashboard |
| Creator Marketplace | None published | Creator accounts, may not be available to everyone yet |
Meta publishes no follower number for Subscriptions or Creator Marketplace. Instagram's Partner Monetization Policies only say you need an authentic, established presence, including a sufficient follower base. So at 20k, the dashboard is your answer: if a tool appears, it's yours.
How to switch on each tool at 20k
Gifts
Go to your profile, tap Professional Dashboard, and look under Your Tools for Gifts. Viewers buy Stars and send them on your reels, and Instagram pays one US cent per Star. Collaborative posts can't receive Gifts, so post your strongest reels from your own account.
Badges
Badges work on live video. Supporters buy them during your live and their badge shows next to their name in the comments. Once you've set up a payout account, you'll find your status and estimated earnings in the Badges tab in Settings. Meta caps the payments from a single supporter who buys multiple badges in one live at $250.
Subscriptions
If Subscriptions appears in your professional dashboard, tap Monetization, then Subscription, choose a monthly price and tap Publish. Your followers are notified automatically after 3 days, or you can tap Notify now. One thing to plan for: subscriber-only content can't use most of Instagram's music library, only Meta's Sound Collection or music you're authorised to use.
Why badges deserve a place in your week
At 20k, live is where you're closest to your audience, and badges are built for that moment. Supporters who buy 3 or more badges get a glowing purple profile photo, and questions from the supporters who buy the most badges move to the top of your live Q&A queue. Instagram lets you see who bought badges on each live for up to 90 days, so you can thank them by name with the thank-you sticker in Stories.
That's my favourite part of this tool. It rewards the people who already love what you do, and it gives you a reason to go live regularly.
Brand deals at 20k followers
Brand partnerships are the income line Meta doesn't set the rules for. Set up branded content tools from your profile: tap Menu, then Creator tools and controls, then Branded content, then Set up branded content tools. If you're not eligible, you can request a review. Every paid post needs the paid partnership label, including posts about products a brand gave you for free.
If Creator Marketplace shows in your dashboard, open Branded content and tap View available projects. You'll see what the brand wants, the posting date and the payment on offer, and whether those terms are negotiable or fixed.
Getting paid: the settings to sort first
Every tool above pays into the same payout account, and your balance includes earnings from all of them together. Set it up from your professional dashboard: tap Tools, then Payouts. You'll need your legal first and last name, which must match the name on your tax ID, plus your bank name, country, SWIFT code and account number.

| Payout detail | What Instagram says |
|---|---|
| When you're paid | Around the 21st of each month, for the previous month |
| Minimum outside the US | $25 for most payout methods, $100 for wire transfer |
| Below the minimum | The balance carries over to the next month |
| Changing bank details | A 5-day hold, so change them at least 10 days before a payment date |
You'll get an invoice by email every month, even when you earned very little, and a remittance statement once you're paid.

The two traps that cost creators at 20k
- No payout account. Without one, Instagram lets you earn up to $500 per tool, with a maximum of $1,500 across 3 tools, and you forfeit those earnings after 6 months.
- Bought growth. Instagram says creators can lose the ability to monetize if their audience is largely fake likes, follows or views. At 20k, a bought chunk of followers can cost you every tool on this page.
If you're earlier on the ladder, start with where one thousand followers sits in India.
My verdict
20k followers in India is the size where Instagram's own tools start to add up, but only if you switch them on. Do Gifts, badges and branded content this week, add Subscriptions if it appears, and set up your payout account first. Then go live once a week for a month and see who turns up for you. For the next milestone, my page on 50k followers income in India covers what changes with brands, and how Instagram live badges work goes deeper on the live side.
