A good roleplay prompt tells the AI who to be, who you are, where the scene is set and the rules of the game, such as staying in character and waiting for your reply. Below are roleplay prompts you can paste into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini for interview practice, sales calls, languages, tough conversations and storytelling.
Roleplay is one of the most useful things you can do with an AI chatbot, and one of the least used. Rehearsing a pay rise conversation or a sales call out loud, with something that pushes back, beats reading another list of tips. The trick is setting the scene well enough that the AI doesn't drop the act after two messages.
The five parts of a roleplay prompt
| Part | What to include | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Character | Who the AI plays, with a personality and a goal | A busy, sceptical buyer who's happy with their current supplier |
| Your role | Who you are in the scene | A sales rep calling for the first time |
| Setting | Where and when it happens | A five-minute phone call on a Friday afternoon |
| Rules | Stay in character, one reply at a time, wait for me | Don't help me or give tips until I say stop |
| Debrief | What happens when you finish | When I type STOP, score me and list three fixes |
The debrief is the part most people skip, and it's where the learning happens. Ask for it at the end, not during the scene, or the AI keeps stepping out of character to coach you.
Why the AI breaks character, and how to stop it
Anthropic's own guidance for keeping Claude in character is a good rulebook for any chatbot. It says to set the role in a system prompt, give detailed information about the character's personality, background and traits, and prepare it for likely scenarios with a list of situations and how to respond. In plain terms: the thinner the character, the faster it slips back into being a helpful assistant.
Google says much the same about Gems. Its help page tells you to give a persona, a task, context and a format. If you run the same roleplay often, save it as a Gem in Gemini or a Project in Claude so you don't paste the setup every time.
Roleplay prompts for work
Job interview practice
Copy this prompt
Let's roleplay. You're the hiring manager for a (job title) role at (type of company). You're friendly but you dig into vague answers. I'm the candidate. Ask one interview question at a time and wait for my answer. Ask a follow-up if my answer is vague. Stay in character until I type STOP, then score me out of 10 and give me three specific improvements.
Sales call practice
Copy this prompt
Let's roleplay a cold call. You're (name), owner of a (type of business). You're busy, you're happy with your current supplier and you raise at least two objections, one about price and one about timing. I'm a sales rep selling (product). Reply as the owner only, one message at a time. When I type STOP, tell me where I lost you.
Asking for a pay rise
Copy this prompt
Roleplay my manager. You value my work but the budget is tight and you'll try to delay the conversation. I'm asking for a pay rise. Push back realistically. Don't give me advice during the scene. When I type STOP, tell me which of my arguments landed and which didn't.
A difficult customer
Copy this prompt
You're an angry customer whose order arrived damaged for the second time. You want a refund and you're threatening a bad review. I'm the shop owner. Stay angry unless I acknowledge the problem and offer a fair fix. One reply at a time.
Roleplay prompts for learning
Language practice
Copy this prompt
Let's roleplay in French. You're a waiter in a busy Paris cafe and I'm a tourist ordering lunch. Speak only French at beginner level. After each of my replies, add one line in English correcting my biggest mistake, then carry on the scene.
History interview

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Roleplay a historical figure: (name). Answer my questions in their voice using what's known about their life and views. If I ask about something they couldn't have known, say so in character. Stay in role until I type STOP.
Roleplay prompts for stories and games
Choose your own adventure
Copy this prompt
You're the narrator of a mystery set in a small seaside town in 1950s England. I play a visiting journalist. Describe each scene in under 120 words, then give me three choices plus the option to do something else. Keep track of clues I find. Never decide what my character does.
Game master for a tabletop session
Copy this prompt
Act as the game master for a short fantasy adventure for one player. Create a village with a problem, three characters with secrets and one twist. Describe, then ask what I do. Roll dice by telling me the number you rolled and what it means.
Safety notes before you start
Roleplay with AI is fine for practice and fun, but keep a few rules in mind. Don't share real personal details inside a scene, because it's still a chat with a company's servers. And be careful with companion-style apps for children. Character.AI announced on 29 October 2025 that it would remove the ability for users under 18 to have open-ended chats on its platform, taking effect no later than 25 November, and limit teen chat time to two hours a day before then. That tells you how seriously the platform itself took the risk.
For work practice, general chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are the better choice anyway. They follow a scene setup well, and you can ask for the debrief in the same chat.
My verdict on roleplay prompts
The best roleplay prompts are specific about the character, strict about the rules and clear about the debrief. Rehearse your next interview, sales call or awkward conversation with one of the prompts above and you'll walk in having already heard the hard questions. If you're looking for apps built around characters, I've compared Character AI alternatives and explained what Character AI's free plan includes, and there are more prompts for negotiating a pay rise if that's your next conversation.
Frequently asked questions
What is a roleplay prompt?
It's a set of instructions that asks an AI chatbot to play a character in a scene with you, with rules such as staying in character and replying one message at a time.
How do I stop the AI breaking character?
Give the character a detailed personality, background and goal, list the rules, and ask for feedback only when you type a stop word. Anthropic recommends detailed character information and example scenarios.
Which AI is best for roleplay practice?
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all follow a well-written scene setup. Pick the one you already use and save the setup as a Project or a Gem if you repeat it.
Can I use roleplay prompts to practise interviews?
Yes. Ask the AI to play the hiring manager, ask one question at a time, follow up on vague answers and score you at the end.
Is AI roleplay safe for teenagers?
Be careful with companion apps. Character.AI announced on 29 October 2025 that it would remove open-ended chat for users under 18.
Can I save a roleplay setup?
Yes. Save it as a Gem in Gemini or put it in Project instructions in Claude, so every new chat starts with the same scene.
