The catch: why your chat might switch styles
This one confuses lite users. If a conversation suddenly feels different partway through, it's usually because your daily premium allowance has run out and the chat has moved to a standard style. Character.AI says that's working as designed, and it resets the next day. If you'd rather have premium chats with no daily cap, that's the reason to move to (c.ai+).
Age rules: who can use it, and who can chat
This is the part that matters most for parents. Character.AI's Safety Center says users must be at least 13 years old, or at least 16 in Europe, to create an account.
In October 2025 Character.AI announced it would end open-ended chat for under-18 users, rolling out from 24 November 2025. Now, users verified as under 18 get Reading Mode, which Character.AI describes as browsing characters and viewing content without chat features. So for teenagers, the free plan doesn't mean free chatting; it means reading only.
