What Does IB Mean? Inspired By on Instagram, Inbox, and the International Baccalaureate

On Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest, IB usually means 'inspired by'. Wiktionary lists IB as an internet and art initialism of inspired by, and creators use it to credit the person whose idea, recipe, outfit or design they've borrowed, as in 'IB @handle'. In education, IB means the International Baccalaureate. In some chats it's short for inbox.

IB is a small credit line that does a lot of social good. When it's used well, it tells your audience where an idea came from and sends a little traffic back to the original creator. When it's missing, people notice. Here's what IB means on social media, how to use it fairly, and the other IBs you'll meet in schools, banks and old footnotes.

IB means 'inspired by' on social media

Wiktionary's entry for IB includes an internet and art sense: initialism of inspired by. That's the meaning behind captions like 'outfit IB @stylistname' or 'recipe IB my nan'. It signals that you didn't come up with the idea from scratch, and points to who did.

You'll see it most where people copy each other's ideas openly: recipe videos, nail art, interior styling, fashion, fan art, dance trends and design. In those spaces, crediting is part of the etiquette. 'IB' is the shortest way to do it.

How to credit with IB fairly

  1. Tag the creator. 'IB @handle' is much more useful than 'IB someone I saw'.
  2. Put it where people will see it. Early in the caption beats buried under hashtags.
  3. Say what you borrowed. 'Colour palette IB @handle' is clearer than a vague credit.
  4. Don't use IB for a straight copy. If you've reposted their work, that's a repost, not inspiration.

That last point matters. 'Inspired by' means you made something new from their idea. If you're sharing their photo or video itself, credit them as the creator and get permission first. My guide on how to repost someone else's story with credit walks through the polite way to do it, and so does my step-by-step on reposting a post on Instagram.

IB as inbox

In some chats, ib means inbox, as in 'ib me' for 'message me privately'. Wiktionary records ib as an abbreviation of inbox in Vietnamese, where it's common in online selling: a seller might reply 'ib' to a comment asking about price or sizes, meaning 'check your messages'.

If a comment says 'ib' or 'ib me', it's almost always this meaning, an invitation to switch to a direct message. Brands that sell through comments see it constantly.

IB as the International Baccalaureate

Dictionary.com's acronym entry focuses on this one. IB stands for International Baccalaureate, formerly IBO, a foundation in Geneva, Switzerland, that develops international education programmes for children aged 3 to 19. A student 'doing IB' is studying one of its programmes, usually the Diploma Programme in the last two years of school.

Wiktionary quotes a 2006 Guardian report on the UK exam system describing the IB as an academically challenging, broader-based option than A-levels, and noting the top IB score was counted as equivalent to six A grades at A-level. Dictionary.com's examples include a Reddit post from 2012 about using IB results to skip university courses. So on student forums, IB is nearly always the qualification.

The footnote one turns up in old books. Dictionary.com lists ib. as an abbreviation of ibidem and points to ibid., which scholars use to say 'same source as the last note'. And the Singlish sense is very specific: Wiktionary quotes a 2020 Singapore news site using IB for an organised online group pushing a political line.

How to tell which IB someone means

  • Next to an @handle in a caption: inspired by.
  • As a reply to a price question in comments: inbox me.
  • On a school, university or parent forum: International Baccalaureate.
  • On LinkedIn or a finance job advert: investment banking.
  • In a book's footnotes, with a full stop: ibidem.

IB vs 'via', 'cr' and 'ib' with a hashtag

IB sits in a small family of credit shorthand. 'Via @handle' usually means you found the content through that account, even if they didn't make it. 'Cr' or 'credit' means the person named made the thing you're sharing. And IB means you made something new, sparked by their idea. Picking the right one is a small sign of respect for the creator.

You'll also see IB used as a hashtag, like #ib or #inspiredby, especially on Pinterest and in nail art and craft communities. A hashtag is fine for discovery, but it doesn't credit anyone on its own. If you know who inspired you, tag them in words as well. That's the part that sends goodwill, and often followers, back their way.

Why IB matters for small business accounts

If your brand shares ideas from other creators, IB is a cheap way to build goodwill. Creators notice who credits them, and many will share or comment when you tag them fairly. It also protects you: a clear credit is the difference between 'inspired by' and 'copied from' in the eyes of your followers.

Flip it round too. If someone posts something IB your work, that's a compliment and a chance to engage. A quick comment or share shows you're generous, and it often sends their audience your way. The one thing I'd avoid is using 'IB' as a fig leaf for a near-identical copy of someone else's post. Followers spot it, and it can do more harm than leaving the post unshared.
