White Heart Emoji Meaning: Pure Love, Condolences and Weddings 🤍

The white heart emoji 🤍 means gentle, pure love and support, and it's also the heart people choose most when someone has died or they're sending condolences. Its official Unicode name is White Heart, approved in Unicode 12.0 in 2019, which makes it far younger than the red or blue hearts. The catch: the same 🤍 can sit under a wedding photo or a memorial post, so the words around it tell you which one you're reading.

The white heart is quiet. It doesn't shout romance like red, and it isn't tied to a team or a brand. That's exactly why people reach for it in tender moments. Here's what it means in each setting, why it's linked so strongly to loss, and when it's the right heart to send.

A newer heart: the 2019 Unicode arrival

Plenty of people assume every heart colour has been around forever. Emojipedia lists White Heart as approved in Unicode 12.0 in 2019 and added to Emoji 12.0 the same year. Before that, there wasn't a white heart emoji at all.

Emojipedia also points out an older lookalike: a character called White Heart Suit, from the playing card symbols. It's available, but it isn't meant to show as a colourful emoji, so it looks like a thin outline. If you're copying a heart from a website and it comes out as a plain outline, that's probably the one you've grabbed.

Why 🤍 shows up in memorial and condolence posts

This is the meaning that surprises most people. Emojipedia says the white heart is commonly used to discuss someone passing away, or to refer to something heavenly or angelic. Its study of heart emoji use on X (then Twitter) found that the words most likely to appear with 🤍 included 'angel', 'goodnight', 'peace' and 'remember', which Emojipedia read as paying tribute to someone who'd died.

These weren't the most common words overall. 'Love', 'thank', 'birthday' and 'happy' still appear with almost every heart. But the tribute words made up a significant minority, enough to give 🤍 its own reputation. So a single white heart under news of a death is a quiet way of saying 'I'm thinking of you'.

Emojipedia found one more pattern: the pleading face 🥺 was almost three times more likely to appear alongside the white heart than the next most common companion, the blue heart. Put together, 🥺🤍 often reads as soft, emotional and a little vulnerable.

Weddings, angels and other white things

Like every coloured heart, 🤍 also celebrates things that are white. Emojipedia singles out wedding dresses, and Dictionary.com adds snowy days, white clothing and fluffy white puppies. You'll see it all over bridal posts, christening photos and winter scenes.

Pure love from a partner, a friend or family

Dictionary.com describes the white heart as a way to show love, support, close bonds and admiration. From a partner, it often feels softer and more devoted than a red heart. From a friend, it's affection without any flirting. From family, especially after a hard day, it's comfort.

If you're not sure how someone meant it, ask yourself what just happened in the chat. A white heart after you've shared bad news is support. A white heart after a photo of the two of you is love. There's no hidden code beyond that.

How to reply when someone sends you 🤍

  1. If it follows sad news you shared, a simple 'thank you, that means a lot' is plenty.
  2. If it's on a wedding or baby post, reply with congratulations or send one back.
  3. If it's from a partner, you can match it with any heart you like, red included.
  4. If you're sending it after a death, add a line of your own words. The heart supports the message, it doesn't replace it.

The white heart works best when it feels considered. Because it's quieter than red, people tend to notice when it's chosen on purpose, and that's what makes it comforting.

Grey or white? How it renders on screens

Dictionary.com notes that on most platforms the white heart displays as a whitish grey so it stays visible on light screens, and several platforms add an outline to help it stand out. On older devices that don't support it, it can appear as an empty box instead. If someone tells you your heart arrived as a square, their phone hasn't updated since before 2019.

Example messages with a white heart

These are made-up messages to show how it's used, not real chats:

  • 'So sorry about your grandad 🤍' A condolence message, gentle and respectful.
  • 'Can't believe we're getting married in a month 🤍' Wedding excitement.
  • 'Goodnight 🥺🤍' Soft affection between close friends or partners.
  • 'First snow of the year 🤍' Love for a white, wintry scene.

When I'd send 🤍 from a business account

If you run a business account, the white heart is the one I'd pick when a customer or a follower shares sad news. It's calm, respectful and it won't look like a sales post. It also suits wedding, bridal and baby businesses, where the colour fits the product.

When not to use it: anywhere a light, jokey tone is expected, or as a reaction to a complaint, where it can look dismissive. In a work chat, a 🤍 is fine for supporting a colleague who's going through something, but write a few words too. A heart alone can feel thin.
