How to Pin a Post on Facebook (Profile, Page and Group)

To pin a post on Facebook, tap the three dots on the post and choose Pin post or Pin to Featured. On a Page, switch into the Page first. In a group, only admins and moderators can pin. The thing that trips people up is the name: Facebook now often calls it Featured.

Pinning keeps your most important post in view when everything else slides down the feed. For a small business that might be your opening hours, a welcome post, an event or your best offer. For a group admin it's usually the rules or a big announcement. Facebook has changed how pinning works more than once, and these days profiles, Pages and groups each handle it a little differently, which is why people get stuck.

Facebook's help pages don't load in full outside the app, so the steps below come from summaries of Facebook's help content and the menus as widely described. Menus vary by app version and by account type, so if your wording differs, look for anything with Pin or Featured in it.

Pinning a Facebook post: profile, Page and group compared

WhereWhat the option is usually calledWho can do it
Personal profilePin post, or adding the post to FeaturedYou, on your own posts
Facebook PagePin to Featured, or Pin postPage admins and people with posting access
Facebook groupPin to Featured, or Announcement in some groupsGroup admins and moderators

Pin a post on your Facebook profile

  1. Go to your profile and find the post you want at the top.
  2. Tap or click the three dots in the top right of the post.
  3. Choose Pin post. If you don't see it, look for an option to add the post to Featured.
  4. Check your profile. The pinned post should sit above your other posts or in your Featured area.

To undo it, open the same three dots menu on the pinned post and choose the unpin option.

Pin a post on a Facebook business Page

On a Page you'll need to be using Facebook as the Page, so switch into it first from your profile menu.

  1. Switch to your Page and go to its main view.
  2. Find the post you want to highlight and tap the three dots on it.
  3. Choose Pin to Featured or Pin post, depending on what your app shows.
  4. Alternatively, find the Featured section on your Page, choose to add or manage it, and select the post you want.

Older guides call this Pin to Top of Page. You may still see that wording on some accounts, but the newer Page experience leans on the Featured section.

Pin an announcement or Featured post in a Facebook group

In groups, pinning is an admin and moderator job, so ordinary members won't see the option.

  1. Open the group and find the post.
  2. Tap the three dots on the post.
  3. Choose Pin to Featured. In some groups you'll see an option to mark it as an announcement instead.
  4. Check the Featured area near the top of the group to make sure it's there.

When you unpin a group post, it doesn't disappear. It goes back to its normal place in the group's feed, sorted by date. If you're still deciding whether your community belongs in a Page or a group, my guide to the difference between Facebook Pages and groups lays it out.

What to pin on your Facebook Page as a small business

A pinned post is prime space, so treat it like your shop window. Here's what tends to work well:

  • A welcome post that says who you help and how to get in touch.
  • An upcoming event, webinar or launch, pinned until the date passes.
  • Your current offer or booking link, so new visitors don't have to hunt for it.
  • A post that explains how to find your products, services or opening times.
  • For groups, the rules and a short welcome for new members.

Refresh it regularly. A pinned post about an event that finished months ago tells visitors the Page isn't looked after. If you need to fix a typo first, it's quicker to edit the Facebook post than to delete and repost it.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Timing still matters for the post before you pin it, because early reactions help it travel. I've covered the best times for small business Pages to post separately.

If the Facebook pin option is missing

  • Check you're on your own post, or on a Page or group where you're an admin or moderator.
  • On a Page, make sure you've switched into the Page rather than using your personal profile.
  • Update the app, as older versions show older menus.
  • Look for Featured instead of Pin. Facebook has renamed the option in several places.
  • Try a computer if the phone app hides it, or the other way round.

Pinned Facebook posts on the phone app versus a computer

The pin option lives in the same three dots menu on both, but the Featured section can look different. On a computer it usually sits near the top of your Page or profile with a heading. On the phone app you may need to scroll a little past your profile details to find it. If you can see the option on one device and not the other, use the one that works. The change shows everywhere.

Unpinning and swapping a pinned Facebook post

Unpinning works through the same three dots menu, with wording like Unpin post or Unpin from Featured. The post stays on your profile, Page or group in its original spot. To swap one pinned post for another, unpin the old one first and then pin the new one, so you're clear about what's sitting at the top.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pin a post on my personal Facebook profile?

Many profiles show a Pin post option or a Featured section in the post's three dots menu. Menus vary by app version and account, so look for either wording.

Who can pin posts in a Facebook group?

Admins and moderators. Ordinary members don't see the option.

Does unpinning delete the post?

No. The post stays where it was originally, sorted by date.

Why can't I pin a post on my Facebook Page?

You may not be switched into the Page, or you may not have the right access. Updating the app and looking for Featured instead of Pin usually helps.

How long does a pinned post stay at the top?

It stays until you unpin it, unless your group uses announcements with a set duration.
