An album cover maker helps you design square cover art for a single, EP, album or podcast, ready to upload to streaming services. Some are design tools with music templates, some are AI image generators and some are photo editors for turning a band photo into artwork. Nine options follow in no particular order.
Cover art is the first thing a listener sees, often as a tiny square in a playlist. It has to read at thumbnail size, match the sound and still look good on a poster.
The nine tools below cover templates, AI artwork and photo editing. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're releasing music, my guide to what Apple Music pays per stream explains the other side of a release.
Album cover makers at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free or open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Your cover art can't be an advert
The Apple Music Style Guide says metadata and cover art must not contain advertising, including URLs, logos, social media handles or dates for future releases, and that search terms and keywords must not be included in cover art.
Independent artists add these all the time. The Instagram handle in the corner, the website along the bottom or the release date in big letters all count, and they can get artwork rejected or sent back for changes. Keep the cover to the artist name, the title and the image. Put the handle and date in your posts instead.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Template, AI image or photo edit?
A template gets you a finished cover in minutes. It's the quickest route for singles, and you'll want to change enough of it that yours doesn't look like everyone else's.
An AI image gives you original artwork from a prompt. Check the tool's terms for commercial use before you release with it.
A photo edit works when the band or the artist is the story. A strong portrait with simple type is a classic for a reason.
Six checks before you upload cover art
- Is it square and large enough for every platform?
- Can you read the title at thumbnail size?
- Have you removed handles, URLs and dates?
- Do you own or license every image on it?
- Does it match the sound of the release?
- Does it work in a playlist next to other covers?
Signs your cover art needs another pass
- The title vanishes at thumbnail size. Go bigger.
- There's a handle in the corner. Remove it.
- It looks like a template. Change more of it.
- It clashes with the music. Rethink the mood.
Do you make an album cover maker? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on cover art that gets noticed
Design for the thumbnail first. Most people will see your cover the size of a postage stamp, so one strong image and two or three words beat a detailed scene with small text. Shrink your draft to the size of a playlist tile and if you can still read it and feel the mood, you're done.
If the cover starts from a photo, my list of AI photo editors helps you clean it up first.
