Meta Family Center: What Parents Can and Can't See With Supervision

Meta Family Center is Meta's hub for parental supervision and safety resources across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Threads and Meta Horizon on Quest. You send your teen one invitation, they accept, and you can then see things like time spent, contact lists and privacy settings, but never the content of their private messages.

It's optional, it needs your teen to agree, and it works across most of Meta's apps from one place. Here's how it works, what each app shows you and the limits Meta spells out in its own FAQs.

How Meta Family Center supervision works

Meta calls supervision an optional feature that lets you work with your teen to decide how much oversight you have over their Meta apps. Family Center is available inside each app and guides you through linking your account with your teen's.

  1. Invite your teen. Send one invitation to supervise them across Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, Messenger and Threads. They need to accept before supervision starts, or they can request supervision from you instead.
  2. Adjust privacy and safety settings. Work through who can see and interact with their content and who can message them.
  3. Set up limits and boundaries. Agree time limits together.
  4. Stay informed and get alerts. Choose the notifications you want.
  5. View the dashboard. Check in on their activity from one place.

What you can see on each app

AppWhat supervision lets you do
FacebookSee which groups your teen joins and new group activity; view and help manage privacy settings for posts, profile visibility and friend requests
MessengerView their contact list and recent interactions; help manage who can contact them, including message request settings
InstagramSee who they follow and who follows them; see time spent; get notified when they share that they've reported content or an account
ThreadsSee who they follow, who follows them and who they've blocked; help manage privacy settings; set time limits and get usage reports
Meta Horizon and QuestApprove or restrict apps by age rating and content type; set daily limits and breaks; get notified when apps are added or removed

What stays private

Meta answers this directly in its FAQs: you can't see private messages or chat history. Supervision shows insights like time spent and contact lists, not what your teen writes. On Messenger you can see who they're talking to, but not what's said.

Instagram also can't fully customise Explore or Reels through supervision. What it does do is notify parents if their teen repeatedly tries to search for terms related to suicide or self-harm within a short period of time.

Supervision rules worth knowing

RuleWhat Meta says
Two parents, one teenNo. A teen can only have one parent or guardian supporting their account
How many teensOne parent can support up to five accounts
Can my teen switch it off?Yes, teens can stop supervision, but you're notified immediately
Do I need my teen's agreement?Yes. They have to accept the invitation before supervision is active

Because of the one-parent limit, if you share parenting, agree who'll be the supervising account before you send the invite.

Supervision and Meta AI

Supervision now reaches Meta AI too. You can see the general topics your teen discusses with Meta AI, like school, travel or health and well-being, but not the conversations themselves. Teens get a 13+ experience by default, and you can move your teen to a more restrictive setting that further limits how Meta AI responds. Your teen is notified, and they need your approval to change it back.

On AI glasses, supervision covers conversations with Meta AI but not other activities like music, calls or photos. And on Meta Horizon, users aged 10 to 12 are automatically enrolled in supervision when their account is created.

Teen Accounts and Family Center

Family Center also hosts Meta's wider teen safety material. Meta is rolling out Teen Accounts on Facebook and Messenger, a new experience for teens guided by parents, alongside the Teen Accounts already on Instagram. The site carries guides for parents on topics such as sextortion, managing online relationships, social comparison and generative AI, some written with outside organisations.

If your teen spends more time on Instagram than Facebook, my guide to Instagram parental controls goes deeper on that app. For families who also use Snapchat, its own Family Center works differently.

My verdict

Meta Family Center is worth setting up if your teen uses Facebook, Messenger or Instagram, because one invitation covers most of their Meta apps and the time limits and contact settings make good conversation starters. Go in with the right expectations, though. It's built for oversight with your teen's agreement, not monitoring, so you won't read their messages and they can turn it off. Set it up together, explain why, and it's far more likely to stay on.

Another teen setting is covered in our Sleep Mode guide.
