The IRS treaty table lists Bangladesh with a copyrights royalty rate of 10, but KDP's payment options page doesn't name Bangladesh, so it falls under Other, where KDP says it likely doesn't support direct deposit or wire and lists check. The catch is a slow postal payment, so tax paperwork and patience both matter.
Bangladeshi authors often write to me with the same worry: the tax side looks friendly on paper, but the payment side is murky. I've read KDP's help pages on payment methods, check delivery and tax, and checked the IRS treaty table for Bangladesh. The two halves point in different directions. I'm not giving tax or legal advice, so ask a local accountant about specifics.
The treaty row for Bangladesh is the good news
Open the IRS treaty Table 1 and Bangladesh has its own row. Under copyrights the rate reads 10, with article 12(2) as the citation. That's the line authors tend to point to. For comparison, the same table shows 30 for social security and 10 for general interest, so the royalty row is the one that matters to an author.
Two cautions. Remember it only covers what the US withholds, and says nothing about what Bangladesh expects from you. Also, whether a reduced rate applies to your books depends on what you enter in your KDP tax profile, not on what a blog says.
Why KDP's payment table leaves Bangladesh out
KDP's payment options page lists countries against direct deposit, check and wire transfer. Bangladesh isn't named. Its fallback wording for every unlisted country is that KDP probably can't send direct deposit or wire payments to a bank in your location.
Under that fallback, the only thing KDP lists is a paper check. It's priced in US dollars on most stores, with pounds on the UK store and Canadian dollars on the Canadian one. The page warns that checks come with minimum payment thresholds and arrive more slowly than electronic payments.
How long a cheque can take
Once a payment date passes, KDP warns the paper cheque can need as long as 30 days to land at the postal address saved on your account. Before that, there's the normal monthly cycle: roughly 60 days from the close of the sales month, stretching to 90 for Expanded Distribution.
Put those two delays together and a sale can take a long while to become cash. Make sure the postal address on your account is complete and one that a courier or post office will deliver to.
Getting an ITIN support letter
An ITIN support letter from Amazon has three entry conditions on KDP's page: a live tax treaty between the US and your country of permanent residence, a finished KDP tax profile, and at least one US payment already received from KDP. Bangladesh has a row on the IRS table, which is encouraging, but only KDP's wording settles it.
Sequence matters: profile first, a payment next, the request last. If you have no US number but hold an income tax identification number from the authority at home, KDP's tax page says you can enter that.
| What I checked | What the official pages say for Bangladesh |
|---|---|
| On KDP's payment table | Not named, so Other applies |
| Method KDP lists | Paper cheque by post |
| Cheque delivery | Can take up to 30 days |
| IRS table copyrights rate | 10, article 12(2) |
| Royalty payment timing | Monthly, about 60 days behind |
Keeping your tax form valid
Your W-8 doesn't last forever. KDP says it runs out on the final day of the third calendar year after signing, and a lapsed form means a reduced rate slips back to 30%. Put the expiry in your calendar when you submit it, and redo the tax profile if your name or country of residence changes.

What a Bangladeshi author should do first
Before you publish, read the payment options page, then work through the tax profile in one sitting so your answers stay consistent. Write down the postal address you give, because the cheque goes there. Then publish, and let the first royalty report tell you what a real month looks like rather than guessing from forum posts.
If anything on KDP's pages changes, trust the pages over this one. They're the source for every payment fact here, and I'd rather you checked them than took my word.
Cheques, scams and Bangladesh
- KDP doesn't ask for a fee to release a cheque.
- Never share a bank PIN or mobile banking code with someone who says they're from Amazon.
- Be careful with agents who offer to cash cheques or run your KDP account for a share.
- Be careful with training offers promising a fixed income from books.
If you need a faster route for client money
KDP pays by the methods on its own page, so other tools sit alongside it. I'm not ranking them. You can read what Payoneer says for Bangladesh, what Wise offers there, and how PayPal treats Bangladeshi accounts before deciding what to use for other income.
So, does Amazon KDP work in Bangladesh?
You can earn royalties, and the IRS table gives a treaty figure, but on KDP's own page the route is a cheque rather than a local deposit. Expect delays and a lot of paperwork, and do the tax profile carefully the first time.
