An AI cover letter generator drafts a letter from your resume and the job description, so you start from a tailored first version instead of a blank page. Some sit inside resume builders, some come bundled with auto-apply and interview tools, and a few let you download a letter free. Nine options follow in no particular order.
The cover letter is the part of an application most people rush. It's also the one place where you can explain why this job, at this company, and not just list what you've done.
AI won't write the best letter for you, but it'll get you a decent draft in minutes. The nine tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you prefer to steer the writing yourself, my ChatGPT prompts for a cover letter that gets read give you more control.
AI cover letter tools at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free or open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

What the official careers advice says
The National Careers Service describes a cover letter as a short letter, usually 3 to 5 paragraphs long, and says you should always include one when you apply for a job using a CV. Its tips include writing a new one for every job and matching the keywords the employer uses in the job advert.
That's the test for any generator. If it makes one generic letter you could send anywhere, it's working against the advice. The useful ones read the job description and change the letter each time, so your job is to check the facts and add one line only you could write.
Generator, template or full job suite?
A standalone generator is the quickest route when you only need letters. Paste in the job, add your resume and edit the draft.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Templates suit people who like to write but want a structure and a clean layout that matches their resume.
Full job search suites write letters as one step among many, alongside resume tailoring, tracking and applying. They're worth it if you're sending a lot of applications each week.
For feedback on the whole search, our list of AI career coach apps sets out the coaching tools.
Five checks before you send an AI-written letter
- Is the hiring manager's name and title right?
- Does it mention something specific about the company?
- Are the skills it claims ones you can prove?
- Is it 3 to 5 short paragraphs, not a wall of text?
- Does it end by saying how they can contact you?
A letter needs a strong CV beside it, and our guide to online CV builders sets out the builders.
Signs your cover letters need a rethink
- You reuse one letter everywhere. Tailor each draft.
- It repeats your resume line by line. Tell a story instead.
- It's longer than a page. Cut to five paragraphs.
- It never names the company. Add one real detail.

My plain advice on AI cover letter generators
Let the tool write the middle, then write the first and last sentence yourself. The opening should name the role and one real reason you want it, and the close should sound like you. Recruiters read a lot of AI letters now, and those two sentences are where yours can feel human.
For the writing habits that still matter with or without AI, my seven cover letter writing techniques are a quick read.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI cover letter generator?
It's a tool that drafts a cover letter from your resume and a job description, so you can edit a tailored first version instead of starting from scratch.
Are AI cover letter generators free?
Some let you create or download a letter free, and others offer a trial. Check the free plan column above and confirm on each vendor's site.
Can employers tell if a cover letter was written by AI?
Often, if it's left unedited. Generic phrasing and claims that don't match your resume are easy to spot. Edit the draft and add specific details.
How long should a cover letter be?
The National Careers Service says a cover letter is usually 3 to 5 paragraphs long.
Should I write a new cover letter for every job?
Yes. The National Careers Service advises writing a new one for every job you apply for, tailored to the company and the role.
Can I use the same tool for my resume and cover letter?
Yes. Several resume builders include a cover letter generator, which keeps the design and details consistent across both documents.
