An AI career coach gives you on-demand advice about your next move, from choosing a career path to tailoring applications and practising interviews. Some are dedicated coaching chats, some sit inside resume builders and job search copilots, and one connects employees with human coaches. Ten options follow in no particular order.
A good human careers coach is worth every minute, but most people can't book one every time they're stuck on a cover letter or an interview question at eleven at night.
That's where AI coaches help. The ten below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're changing direction, my guide to the best resume template for a career change pairs well with any of them.
AI career coaches side by side
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free or open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

The free human adviser most job seekers forget
The National Careers Service says adults aged 18 or older in England can contact a careers adviser through the DWP Jobs and Careers Service. Its phone lines are open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and calls are free from landlines and most mobile numbers.
That changes how I'd use an AI coach. Let the AI do the volume work: practice questions, rewrites, research on roles and late-night what-ifs. Then take the one big decision, such as whether to retrain or which offer to accept, to a person who can ask you the questions an app won't think of.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Coaching chat, job search copilot or interview assistant?
A coaching chat answers open questions about your career and suggests next steps based on what you tell it. It's the closest thing to talking to a coach.
A job search copilot is more practical. It matches roles, tailors your resume and tracks applications, with coaching built in along the way.
An interview assistant focuses on the conversation itself, with practice questions and feedback on your answers. Check each employer's rules before using any tool during a live interview.
Five questions to ask an AI career coach before you trust it
- Does it ask about your skills and goals before giving advice?
- Can it explain why it's suggesting a role or a change?
- Does it keep your resume and personal details private?
- Can you export what you build, such as a resume or notes?
- Does it point you to real people when the question is too big?
A coach can steer the search, and our guide to profile optimizers for LinkedIn covers tools that sharpen your profile.
Signs you're ready for an AI career coach
- You keep rewriting the same cover letter. Get a second opinion.
- You freeze on interview questions. Practise with feedback.
- You can't name your next role. Explore paths first.
- You apply everywhere and hear nothing. Tailor every application.
Do you make an AI career coaching tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on using an AI career coach
Give the coach real material to work with. Paste in your current resume, three job adverts you like and one you don't, then ask it what the pattern is. You'll get far better advice than from a blank 'what should I do with my life' question, and you'll spot the skills gap in minutes.
Then practise out loud, not just in writing. My prompts for practising a job interview out loud work with most AI coaches and chat tools.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI career coach?
It's an app that gives on-demand career advice, from choosing a path to tailoring applications and practising interviews, using AI rather than a person.
Are AI career coaches free?
Several have a free version or free core tools. Check the free plan column above, then confirm on each vendor's site.
Can an AI career coach replace a human coach?
It can handle practice and research well, but a person is better for big decisions. In England, adults can speak to a free careers adviser.
How do I get free careers advice in England?
The National Careers Service says adults aged 18 or older can contact a careers adviser through the DWP Jobs and Careers Service, by phone or online.
Is it safe to share my resume with an AI coach?
Read each tool's privacy policy first, and remove details such as your home address or date of birth before you upload.
Can I use an AI tool during a live interview?
Some tools offer live support, but many employers don't allow it. Check the rules for each interview before you rely on one.
