A monogram maker turns your initials into a designed mark: you type the letters, pick a font or frame and download the result for a logo, label, gift or craft project. Most of the tools below have a free version, a couple are logo makers with monogram designs, and one sits inside a cutting machine's software. Nine options follow in no particular order.
A monogram's one of the oldest branding ideas there is. Two or three letters, set well, can sit on a shop sign, a wedding invitation, a tote bag or a jar label and still look like you.
The nine tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you need a full logo rather than initials, my round-up of the best free logo makers covers the wider options.
Monogram makers at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free or open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Can you copyright a monogram of your initials?
The U.S. Copyright Office says copyright does not protect names, titles, slogans or short phrases, and that in some cases these things may be protected as trademarks instead. A set of initials sits very close to a short name.
So if your monogram's going to be your business logo, the protection worth looking at is a trade mark, not copyright. And because anyone can type the same letters into the same free tool, a monogram that's going to carry a brand needs some custom work on top of the template, such as spacing, a frame or a colour of your own.

Font monogram, framed monogram or logo monogram?
A font monogram uses a special typeface where the letters link up, with the surname initial often larger in the middle. It's the classic look for weddings, towels and embroidery, and it's the one most free tools do well.
A framed monogram puts the letters inside a circle, crest or wreath. It's a good fit for stickers, stamps and labels where the shape has to work on its own.
A logo monogram is designed to sit next to a business name. Logo makers offer these as ready-made designs you'll then edit.
Six questions before you pick a monogram maker
- Do you need a vector file such as SVG for cutting or printing?
- Will it be stitched, printed, engraved or used online?
- How many letters will it hold: one, two or three?
- Can you change the letter order for a couple or a family?
- Can you download it without creating an account?
- Will you need matching versions in more than one colour?
Marks like these end up on boxes and labels, and our packaging design software round-up covers the software for that.
Signs your monogram needs more work
- It blurs when printed small. Simplify the font.
- The letters are hard to read. Try a plainer style.
- It only works in one colour. Test a one-colour version.
- You only have a PNG. Export a vector file.
Do you make a monogram maker? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on free monogram makers
Don't settle on the first one. Make three versions before you choose: one font monogram, one framed and one simple pair of letters. Print them at the real size you'll use, on a label, a card or a test stitch, because a design that looks lovely on screen can turn into a blur at two centimetres wide.
If you want your monogram to match the rest of your designs, my guide on adding your own fonts to a brand kit shows how to keep the same lettering everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
What is a monogram maker?
It's a tool that turns your initials into a designed mark, using linked fonts, frames or logo templates, which you can download for printing, cutting or online use.
Are monogram makers free?
Most of the tools above have a free version. Check the free plan column, then confirm which file types you can download free on each vendor's site.
What order do the letters go in a monogram?
A traditional three-letter personal monogram often puts the surname initial in the middle, larger than the others. Many tools let you set the order yourself.
Which file type do I need for a Cricut?
A vector file such as SVG usually works best for cutting machines, because it keeps clean edges at any size.
Can I copyright my monogram?
The U.S. Copyright Office says copyright does not protect names, titles, slogans or short phrases. Some may be protected as trademarks instead.
Can I use a free monogram as my business logo?
You can, but anyone could make the same design from the same template, so add your own spacing, frame or colours before you put it on signs and packaging.
