Best Packaging Design Software (2026): 9 Tools Compared

Packaging design software helps you plan the shape of a box or bag, lay your artwork onto a dieline and see the result as a 3D mockup before anything is printed. Some tools make free custom-sized templates, some are mockup generators for listings, and a few are full structural design suites. Nine options follow in no particular order.

Packaging is the first physical thing a customer touches. For a small brand, it's often the only branded moment between the order and the product.

Getting it right means two separate jobs: the structure, which is the dieline that becomes the box, and the artwork that goes on it. The nine tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're still deciding what your packaging needs to do, my piece on how labels and packaging design work as a marketing asset is a good starting point.

Packaging design tools at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free or open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

The UK packaging rule small brands should know about

GOV.UK says organisations that supplied or imported more than 25 tonnes of packaging in the UK in the previous year, and meet an annual turnover threshold, may have obligations under extended producer responsibility (EPR) for packaging. The guidance sets out separate rules for small and large producers.

Plenty of new brands sit below that line. Even so, packaging weight and materials are exactly what EPR reporting asks about, so it's worth recording them from your first box. The design stage is where you choose them, which makes your packaging software the easiest place to keep that record.

Dieline, artwork or mockup: which do you need first?

A dieline is the flat outline of the box with its folds, flaps and glue areas. You need one sized to your product before any artwork goes on.

Artwork is the design itself: logo, colours, text and any legal labels. It's laid over the dieline in a vector editor.

A mockup shows the finished box in 3D. It's useful for checking the design and for product photos before the first print run arrives.

Seven checks before you send packaging to print

  1. Is the dieline sized to the product plus any padding?
  2. Have you allowed for bleed on every panel?
  3. Is the artwork in the colour mode your printer asks for?
  4. Are barcodes and legal text on a flat, readable panel?
  5. Have you checked the design on a 3D mockup from every side?
  6. Have you printed one sample and folded it by hand?
  7. Have you recorded the material and weight of each part?

Signs your packaging design needs another round

  • The flaps don't close cleanly. Resize the dieline.
  • Your logo lands on a fold. Move it to a flat panel.
  • Colours print dull. Check the colour mode.
  • The box is far bigger than the product. Size it down.

My plain advice on packaging design software

Start with a free sized template and a plain paper print. Fold it, put your product inside and live with it for a day. You'll catch the flap that won't close and the logo that sits upside down when the box opens, long before you order a single printed box.

If you sell online as well as in shops, my comparison of packaging for ecommerce versus retail explains why the two often need different designs.

Frequently asked questions

What is packaging design software?

It's software for planning a box or bag's structure, laying artwork onto a dieline and checking the result as a 3D mockup before printing.

Is there free packaging design software?

A few tools have a free version, including free template generators. Check the free plan column above and confirm on each vendor's site.

What is a dieline?

A dieline is the flat outline of a package, showing where it's cut, folded and glued. Artwork is placed on top of it.

Do I need a 3D mockup?

It's not essential, but a mockup helps you spot artwork problems and gives you product images before the first boxes arrive.

Does EPR for packaging apply to small businesses?

GOV.UK says obligations depend on packaging weight and turnover, starting with organisations that supplied or imported more than 25 tonnes in a year and meet a turnover threshold.

Which file format do printers want for packaging?

Most printers ask for a vector file, often a PDF or an Illustrator file, with the dieline on its own layer. Check your printer's specification first.
