Meta Pay is Meta's built-in payment wallet. You save a card, debit card or PayPal account once, then use it to pay for things, donate and send payments to friends inside Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, and at online stores that show the Meta Pay button. It's the same service that used to be called Facebook Pay, and Meta says it charges no fees of its own for using it.
The catch is what it doesn't cover. Meta Pay's Purchase Protection applies to eligible items bought with Meta Pay on Facebook and Instagram. Purchases on third-party sites, local pickups and payments you send to someone in Messenger don't qualify. So paying a stranger with Meta Pay is not the same as buying through checkout.

What you can use Meta Pay for
Meta lists these uses, though availability depends on where you live:
- Sending payments to friends.
- Donating to a charity or a personal fundraiser.
- Buying items on Instagram.
- Buying and selling on Marketplace and in Groups.
- In-app game purchases.
- Buying event tickets.
- Paying at participating online stores.
Meta says it'll keep expanding Meta Pay to more countries, apps and people over time, so if a feature isn't there for you yet, it may simply not have reached your country.
How to set up Meta Pay
On Facebook, from a computer:
- Click your profile picture in the top right.
- Choose Settings and privacy, then Settings.
- Click Meta Account, then Meta Pay.
- Add a payment method and fill in your profile information.
On Instagram, go to More, then Settings, then See more in Meta Account and Meta Pay. From the Meta Pay screen you can add a payment method, set a PIN and see your payment activity. Meta notes that it's gradually moving people to Meta Accounts, so you might see Accounts Center instead of Meta Account settings.
Setting a PIN, and what to do if you forget it
Meta says some payments need a PIN and in some cases it's mandatory. On some devices you can use biometrics as well. To create one on a computer, open Orders and payments, go to Settings and switch on Use PIN to confirm payments. If you forget it, choose Change PIN, then Forgot PIN?, and enter your Facebook password to reset it.
If your payment card was issued in the European Economic Area or the UK, Meta says you may be asked to complete extra authentication steps online when you pay.
Does Meta Pay cost anything?
Meta's answer is short: there are no fees from Meta when using Meta Pay. Two exceptions sit outside Meta. PayPal may charge its own users for some transaction types, such as processing fees on donations. And businesses that sell items on Facebook may be charged fees.
What Meta does with your payment details
This is the question people worry about most, so here's what Meta's Help Center says:
- Your card and bank account numbers are stored in a separate, secured network.
- Those numbers aren't used to personalise your experience or the ads you see.
- Meta does collect information about the purchase itself, such as what you bought, the date, billing, shipping and contact details, and whether you completed the transaction.
- That purchase information can be used to show you more relevant content and ads, for customer support, and for safety checks.
- Your card and bank numbers aren't shared with anyone for marketing without your consent.
If you pay with Shop Pay through Meta Pay, Meta says your purchase information, including contact details and order tracking, is shared with Shopify.

Where Purchase Protection applies
Meta says its Purchase Protection policy didn't change with the rename. It's available on eligible products bought with Meta Pay on Facebook and Instagram. Purchases on third-party sites, through other messaging services, local pickups and sending payments on Messenger don't qualify. If you buy on Marketplace, it's worth knowing which listings use checkout and shipping, which I cover in whether Facebook Marketplace ships.
How to find your Meta Pay transactions
- Click your profile picture, then Settings and privacy and Settings.
- Click Meta Account, then Meta Pay.
- Your history is under Transactions.
If that route isn't there for you yet, use Menu, then Orders and payments, then Go to Meta Pay. Payments made through Autofill don't appear in this history, so contact the seller for those. Meta also says your transactions aren't shared on your Feed or anywhere else.
My advice
Meta Pay is handy if you already buy, donate or pay for tickets inside Meta's apps, and Meta charges nothing for it. Just don't treat it as buyer protection on its own. It protects eligible checkout purchases, not a payment you send to a stranger. If you're comparing ways to pay people you know, my PayPal vs Venmo comparison is a good next read. Set a PIN on day one.
