How to Rotate Video in CapCut on Phone, PC and Online

To rotate video in CapCut on your phone, select the clip, tap Edit, then Transform and Rotate, and keep tapping, since each tap turns it 90 degrees. On desktop, open the Basic panel and type any angle. Menus vary by app version, so look for the rotate icon in Edit if Transform isn't there.

You film a brilliant customer testimonial, open it to edit and it's lying on its side. It happens to everyone, usually because the phone guessed the orientation wrong while you were moving. The good news is it takes seconds to fix in CapCut.

I'll cover the phone app, the desktop editor and CapCut online, following CapCut's own guides. I'll also show you how to deal with the empty space that sometimes appears after rotating, because that's the part that makes a quick fix look amateur.

Rotating a video in the CapCut phone app

  1. Open CapCut, tap New Project and choose the clip.
  2. Tap the video on the timeline to select it.
  3. Tap Edit, then look for Transform and Rotate. One of CapCut's guides shows the rotate icon straight inside Edit instead.
  4. Tap Rotate. CapCut says each turn moves your video 90 degrees.
  5. Keep tapping until it's the right way up.
  6. Tap the export arrow or icon at the top right and choose Export.

Watch the preview after each tap. It's easy to overshoot and end up upside down, but another tap or two brings it round again, so there's no harm in experimenting.

Menus vary by app version, which is why CapCut's own guides list slightly different paths. If you can't see Transform, scroll along the Edit options until the rotate icon appears.

Rotating a video in CapCut on a computer

The desktop editor gives you finer control. CapCut's guide says:

  1. Import your clip and drag it onto the timeline.
  2. Select it, then open the Basic panel at the top right.
  3. Find the rotation setting and enter the angle you need, such as 90, 180 or 270, or any other angle.
  4. Check the preview, then click Export, choose your quality and frame rate, and click Export again.

If you shot several clips the same wrong way, fix one, check it, and then do the rest one by one rather than guessing, so nothing slips through upside down. It only takes a moment per clip.

Because you can type any angle, the desktop app is also the place to straighten a slightly tilted horizon, not just fix a clip that's sideways.

Rotating a video in CapCut online

In CapCut's browser editor, select the clip on the timeline or click it in the player. Find the Rotate option, then either type a degree value or click the wheel icon. CapCut says you can also drag the orientation button on the playback screen. Export when you're happy.

Filling the gaps after you rotate in CapCut

Turn a tall phone clip sideways inside a tall project and you'll get empty space above and below it. CapCut's desktop guide points to the Canvas tool in the Basic panel, where you can fill that space with a blur, a pattern or a colour.

  • Blur is the subtle choice and rarely clashes with your footage. I've gone into blur options more in my guide to blurring in CapCut.
  • Colour is tidy for branded content: use your brand colour and it looks deliberate.
  • Pattern suits playful or seasonal posts.

The other fix is to change the project's shape to match the clip. CapCut can adjust the aspect ratio for different platforms, so set it to suit where you're posting before you export.

Rotate versus flip in CapCut

People often mean one and search for the other. Rotate turns the picture round, like turning a photo on a table. Flip (sometimes called mirror) swaps left and right or top and bottom, like a reflection. CapCut's online tool treats flipping horizontally or vertically as a separate option from rotating. If your video is the right way up but text reads backwards, you need flip, not rotate.

Animating a rotation in CapCut

Rotation isn't only for fixes. CapCut's guide says you can add keyframes for smooth rotation, so a logo or a product shot can spin into place. Set a keyframe at one angle, move along the timeline and change the angle, and CapCut animates between them. Keep it short and subtle for business content; a full spin is fun once, but it gets tiring.

Why orientation matters before you post

Each platform shows video best at a particular shape, and a clip that's upright but the wrong shape still looks off. Rotate first, then pick the aspect ratio for your destination. If the video's heading to YouTube, my walk-through on uploading a video to YouTube from a computer or phone covers the next step.

If CapCut won't rotate your video

  1. Nothing happens? Make sure the clip itself is selected on the timeline, not a text or audio layer.
  2. Can't find Rotate on the app? Menus vary by app version; look under Edit, then Transform, and update CapCut.
  3. Rotated but now there are bars? Use Canvas on desktop to fill them, or change the project's aspect ratio.
  4. Picture reads backwards? That's a flip job, not a rotate.
  5. Only part of the video rotated? Check you rotated the right clip if the timeline has several.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a video in CapCut on my phone?

Select the clip on the timeline, tap Edit, then Transform and Rotate (or the rotate icon inside Edit). Each tap turns the video 90 degrees.

Can I rotate a video by a custom angle in CapCut?

Yes, on desktop and online. On desktop, open the Basic panel and type the angle. Online, set a degree value or use the wheel icon.

How do I get rid of black bars after rotating in CapCut?

On desktop, use the Canvas tool in the Basic panel to fill the space with a blur, pattern or colour, or change the project's aspect ratio to match the clip.

What's the difference between rotate and flip in CapCut?

Rotate turns the picture round. Flip mirrors it left to right or top to bottom. CapCut online treats them as separate options.

Can I animate a rotation in CapCut?
