Is YouTube TV Worth It? An Honest Look at Price, Limits and Who It Suits

YouTube TV is worth it if it replaces a cable bill for a whole US household, because one $82.99 a month membership covers up to 6 accounts, unlimited DVR and 100+ channels. It's not worth it if you mostly watch on-demand shows, travel abroad a lot, or want to skip live TV ads.

That's the short answer. Whether it's worth it for you comes down to how many people share it, how much live TV you watch, and whether its limits get in your way. Here's the evidence from YouTube TV's own pages, as of October 2026.

What you pay

PlanPrice listedWhat you get
YouTube TV main plan$82.99 a month ($59.99 for your first 2 months as a new user)100+ channels, the widest lineup
Sports + News Plan$71.99 a month ($49.99 for your first 5 months as a new user)50+ channels of games and headlines, plus locals
Sports Plan$64.99 a month30+ channels of live games, analysis and sports news, plus locals

Both intro offers end on November 16, 2026, and YouTube TV's page says there are no refunds on them. There are no annual contracts and no equipment, DVR or cancellation fees, according to YouTube TV.

Where YouTube TV earns its price

  • Sharing. Up to 6 accounts in one household, each with its own login, library and recommendations.
  • DVR. Unlimited recording space, with each recording kept for 9 months.
  • Sport features. Multiview lets you watch up to 4 games at once on supported devices, plus key plays and stats views.
  • Flexibility. You can cancel, pause or switch plans whenever you like. A pause runs from 4 weeks up to 6 months.

The limits that make it poor value for some people

  • Live TV ads stay. YouTube TV says you can't fast-forward through ads on live TV, and you typically can't skip ads on on-demand programmes either. Only recordings let you skip.
  • It stops at the border. You can't access any programmes, live or recorded, while travelling outside the US.
  • 3 streams at once. A busy household can hit that, unless you pay $9.99 a month for 4K Plus, which allows unlimited streams at home.
  • Home check-ins. You need to use it in your home area at least once every 3 months to keep the right local channels.
  • No partial refunds. YouTube TV says it doesn't refund partial billing periods, so cancelling mid-month doesn't get you anything back.

Is it worth it for you?

Worth it if...Probably not worth it if...
You're replacing cable for a family of 3 or moreYou live alone and watch mostly on-demand series
Live sport and local news are the main reason you watchYou're abroad for long stretches
You'd use the unlimited DVR every weekAds on live TV would drive you mad
You want to pause in the off-seasonYou only want YouTube without ads (that's YouTube Premium)

If the last row is you, read what YouTube Premium costs instead, because YouTube TV doesn't remove ads from regular YouTube unless you pay for Premium as well.

The cheaper ways to make it worth it

If the full plan feels steep, YouTube TV gives you three levers. Its genre plans, such as Sports or Entertainment + Family, cover less and are offered at different price points. You can pause from 4 weeks up to 6 months when you won't use it. And because 6 household accounts share one price, the cost per person drops with every member who joins. Pick the smallest plan that covers what your household watches.

How to test it without wasting a month

  1. Start the free trial on the plan you're most likely to keep.
  2. Enter your ZIP code first and check your local channels are all there.
  3. Record a few shows and watch on every TV in the house to test the 3-stream limit.
  4. Decide before the trial ends. If it's a no, cancel straight away, because you keep access until the trial finishes anyway.

My YouTube TV free trial guide shows how to check the days you have left.

My verdict

For a US household that watches live sport and news together, YouTube TV is good value: 6 accounts and unlimited DVR beat paying for several smaller apps. For a single viewer who binges on-demand series, it's an expensive way to watch adverts. Use the trial, check your locals and streams, and decide on the numbers, not the brand.
