The best last mile delivery software plans routes, dispatches drivers, tracks deliveries in real time and keeps customers informed until the parcel or product reaches the door. Small local delivery teams need simple dispatch and an app, while larger retailers and couriers need fleets, carriers and hubs in one system. Eleven options follow in no particular order.
The last mile is where delivery goes right or wrong in the customer's eyes. A missed slot, a wrong door or a silent driver undoes everything that happened in the warehouse.
Last mile delivery software keeps that final stretch under control. The eleven tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. My tips on how to expand a courier service business are worth reading alongside it.
Last mile delivery software at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free account or an open source edition. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Routes still have to fit the driver's legal day
GOV.UK's guidance on drivers' hours under the GB domestic rules says you must not drive for more than 10 hours in a day, and must not be on duty for more than 11 hours in any working day.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
So a route plan that looks efficient on screen still has to fit the driver's legal day. Good routing software lets you set shift limits and breaks so the plan the dispatcher sends is one the driver can follow.
Routing app or delivery platform?
A routing app plans efficient stops for a set of drivers. It suits small teams who mostly need a good route and a way to show customers where the van is.
A delivery platform adds dispatch rules, driver management, customer notifications, proof of delivery and, for larger operations, third-party carriers and hubs.
If you deliver large items that need two people or installation, look for tools built for big and bulky delivery, because slot planning works differently there.
Questions for your shortlist
- How many drivers and stops do we handle each day?
- Do we use our own fleet, carriers, or both?
- Can customers track deliveries and pick slots?
- Does it capture photo or signature proof of delivery?
- Can we set driver hours and breaks in the plan?
- Which store, order or warehouse systems must it connect to?
Worth a look if you run a courier business: I've compared the options in my comparison of courier software.
Signs your delivery operation needs software
- Customers call to ask where their order is. Add tracking.
- Routes are planned on a whiteboard. Optimise them.
- Failed deliveries keep rising. Notify customers sooner.
- There's no proof when a parcel goes missing. Capture it.

My plain advice on last mile delivery software
Choose for the delivery you do today and the size you expect to reach soon, not the one you'd like to be in five years. Then measure two things only at first: deliveries on time and failed first attempts.
Those two numbers tell you whether the software is working. For the sales side of route planning, my piece on sales route planner technology is worth a read.
