The best courier software takes orders, dispatches drivers, tracks jobs in real time and captures proof of delivery, then turns it all into invoices. Some tools are built for specialist couriers such as medical and lab runs, others for local same-day delivery, and a few help UK couriers find loads. Ten options follow in no particular order.
A small courier business can run on phone calls and a whiteboard for a while. Then a driver goes off sick, two urgent jobs land at once, and a customer wants proof of a delivery from last Tuesday.
That's when courier software earns its keep. The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're growing, my guide on expanding a courier service business is worth a read alongside it.
Courier software side by side
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free account, a free edition or an open source release. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

- On-demand pickup and delivery: Onro or Deliforce.
- Proof of delivery and customer updates: Detrack or Track-POD.

The weight limit that changes your paperwork
GOV.UK's guide to being a goods vehicle operator says you need an operator licence for a vehicle with a gross plated weight of over 3,500 kg, or an unladen weight of more than 1,525 kg where there's no plated weight. Some vehicle and trailer combinations need one too.
So a courier running only small vans and a courier running a heavier vehicle face different rules. Make sure your software records which vehicle did which job, because that record matters when you grow into bigger vehicles.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Dispatch, driver app, customer portal
Every courier system has three faces. Dispatch is where your office assigns jobs and watches progress on a map.
The driver app shows each driver their jobs, routes and the proof they need to capture: a photo, a signature or a scan.
The customer side lets clients book jobs and track them without phoning you. If you deliver for businesses, this part saves the most calls, so test it as if you were the customer.
Drivers on longer routes need compliant logs, and this list of logging devices for drivers lines up the devices.
What to check before you switch
- How fast can a dispatcher assign a new job?
- Does the driver app work offline?
- What proof of delivery does it capture?
- Can customers book and track without calling?
- Will it create invoices from completed jobs?
- Can subcontract drivers use it too?
If you also store goods for clients, our list of warehouse software for third-party logistics looks at warehouse systems built for that.
Signs you've outgrown spreadsheets
- Jobs are lost between calls. Use one dispatch screen.
- Customers phone for updates. Send tracking links.
- Proof of delivery takes a search. Capture it in the app.
- Invoicing takes days. Bill from completed jobs.
Do you make courier or delivery tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on courier software
Pick the tool your drivers will use without complaint. Give two of them the driver app for a week of real jobs before you decide, because a dispatch screen that looks great in a demo is useless if drivers skip the proof of delivery step.
Then switch on customer tracking links early: they cut the where's-my-parcel calls straight away. My piece on improving delivery tracking explains why customers care so much.
Frequently asked questions
What is courier software?
It's software that takes delivery orders, dispatches drivers, tracks jobs in real time and records proof of delivery, often with invoicing built in.
What's the difference between courier software and last mile software?
There's overlap. Courier software usually focuses on point-to-point and same-day jobs with dispatch and invoicing, while last mile tools focus on routing many drops from a depot.
Do UK van couriers need an operator licence?
GOV.UK says you need a goods vehicle operator licence for vehicles over 3,500 kg gross plated weight, or over 1,525 kg unladen where there's no plated weight.
Can courier software create invoices?
Many tools turn completed jobs into invoices or send them to your accounts software, which saves hours at the end of each month.
What proof of delivery should I capture?
At least a timestamp and location, plus a photo or signature. Medical and high-value jobs often need scans and chain-of-custody records too.
Is there free courier software?
Several tools offer a free trial. Check the free plan column above and confirm on the vendor's site before you commit.
