LinkedIn Document Ads: Specs, Lead Gen Gating and How to Set Up

LinkedIn document ads let you put a PDF, deck or Word document straight into the LinkedIn feed so people can read and download it without leaving LinkedIn. You can run them for brand awareness, engagement, website visits, website conversions or lead generation, and with lead gen you can show a few preview pages and ask for the form before the rest opens.

They're one of the best formats LinkedIn has for anyone with a guide, report or case study worth reading. The catch is in the details: file limits, unclickable links and a gating setup that's easy to get wrong.

What a document ad looks like

A document ad has four parts: introductory text above, the document preview, a headline and a download button. People can page through the document in the feed. When they download it, LinkedIn says it always arrives as a PDF, whatever format you uploaded.

They can also run on the LinkedIn Audience Network, which shows your ads on third-party apps and sites. In that case, people read the document on that partner site rather than on LinkedIn.

Document ad specs at a glance

ElementLinkedIn's limit
File sizeUp to 100 MB and 300 pages
File typesPPT, PPTX, DOC, DOCX and PDF (PDF only for lead generation)
Documents per uploadUp to five
Word limit1 million words
Introductory textUp to 150 characters before it's cut short, 3,000 maximum
HeadlineUp to 70 characters before it's cut short, 200 maximum; defaults to the file name
Ad nameUp to 255 characters, only visible in Campaign Manager
Video and animationNot supported; shown as static images

Two gotchas from the spec sheet. PDFs with multiple layers need flattening, and PDFs with pages of different sizes must be fitted to one page size. Export a clean single-layer PDF and you'll avoid both.

This is the one that wastes the most effort. LinkedIn says hyperlinks in the document are only clickable if someone downloads it. Inside the feed player they're dead. LinkedIn's best-practice page goes further and suggests avoiding calls to action inside the document altogether, because they can't be clicked in the player.

So don't bury your offer on page 12 with a link. Put the action in the ad itself: the headline, the introductory text and, for website objectives, the call-to-action button.

How lead generation gating works

If you choose lead generation as your objective, you attach a Lead Gen Form and pick how many pages people can preview. To read the rest, they click the full-document button and fill in the form. A few rules from LinkedIn:

  • Lead gen document ads only support PDFs.
  • Single-page documents can't use a Lead Gen Form, because at least one page has to be available as a preview.
  • The lead gen objective has a single default call-to-action option: the button that opens the full document.
  • For website visits and website conversions, you also pick how many pages to preview, then add a destination URL and a call-to-action button.

My rule of thumb: preview enough pages to prove the document is worth having, then gate the part people came for. A preview of just the cover page gets you forms from the curious, not the interested. If you want help with the form side, my guide to LinkedIn prospecting tools covers what to do with the leads once they arrive.

How to create a LinkedIn document ad

  1. Check permissions: you need super admin or content admin access on the LinkedIn Page (or the ad poster role LinkedIn offers for Pages), plus creative manager access or higher on the ad account.
  2. Create an ad set in Campaign Manager with brand awareness, engagement, website visits, website conversions or lead generation as the objective.
  3. On the Ads in this ad set page, add an optional ad name and your introductory text.
  4. Under Document, click Upload or select, upload your file and click Add to library, or pick an existing document.
  5. For lead gen or website objectives, move the slider to set how many pages people can preview.
  6. Write your headline, then add a Lead Gen Form or a destination URL and button, depending on the objective.
  7. Click Save ad, then launch the ad set. LinkedIn reviews the ad before it runs.

One odd limitation LinkedIn flags: some documents uploaded before November 2023 and used with a preview-page selection can't be selected again. If an old file is greyed out, upload it to the Document Library again.

Best practices LinkedIn recommends

  • Use a PDF for the best quality. Converting other file types to PDF can reduce quality.
  • Keep the file under 100 MB for a smooth download.
  • Use a standard page size such as A4 or US Letter.
  • Avoid prices, URLs and anything that changes often, so the document doesn't date.
  • Keep it short. The document player has no search.
  • Avoid multi-column layouts and small fonts, and check your colour contrast.

Document ads sit alongside LinkedIn's other formats. If you're new to the platform's ad options, my overview of LinkedIn advertising explains how the objectives and formats fit together.

What to put in a document ad

LinkedIn's own examples are e-books, case studies, white papers, infographics and presentations. In my experience the ones that do best are short and practical: a one-page checklist turned into a five-page guide, a before-and-after case study, or a slide deck from a talk you've already given. If it would make someone's job easier this week, it's a good candidate. If it's a brochure about your company, it isn't.

My verdict

Document ads are the format I'd pick first for any business with a useful guide, checklist or report. They show your expertise right in the feed, which suits B2B buyers who want proof before they talk to anyone. Keep the document short and single-column, put your call to action in the ad rather than the PDF, and use the preview slider to give real value before the form appears.

Pairs well with my guide to LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads, another LinkedIn format worth knowing.

Frequently asked questions

What file types can I use for LinkedIn document ads?

LinkedIn supports PPT, PPTX, DOC, DOCX and PDF. If you choose the lead generation objective, only PDFs are supported.

What is the file size limit for LinkedIn document ads?

LinkedIn's specs say a file can't exceed 100 MB and 300 pages, and you can upload up to five documents.

Are links clickable in LinkedIn document ads?

Only if someone downloads the document. In the feed's document player, LinkedIn says links and calls to action aren't clickable.

Can I gate a LinkedIn document behind a form?

Yes. With the lead generation objective you attach a Lead Gen Form and choose how many pages people can preview before they fill it in. It doesn't work on single-page documents.
