To use ChatGPT Health, open Health from the ChatGPT sidebar (it may sit under More), choose Connect Health, link Apple Health or a supported medical records account, wait for it to sync, then ask your questions anywhere in ChatGPT. It's for logged-in Free, Go, Plus and Pro users in the U.S., aged 18 or over, on the web and iOS.
ChatGPT Health pulls your lab results, medications, sleep and activity into one place so you can ask questions about your own information rather than typing it all in each time. OpenAI is clear that it's there to support medical care, not replace it, and it isn't meant for diagnosis or treatment.
I've built this guide from OpenAI's own help article, launch post and release notes, read in October 2026. If you're outside the U.S., you won't see the connected Health tab yet.
Who can use ChatGPT Health
| Question | OpenAI's answer |
|---|---|
| Plans | Free, Go, Plus and Pro, when logged in |
| Country | United States |
| Age | 18 or older |
| Devices | Web and iOS; connecting Apple Health needs an iPhone |
| Teens | Parents can switch Health access off for linked teen accounts |
You can still ask general health questions in ChatGPT without connecting anything. The Health tab is what lets answers draw on your own records.
How to set up ChatGPT Health
- Open Health from the ChatGPT sidebar. You may need to open the More menu to find it.
- Select Connect Health or Get started.
- Choose Apple Health, Medical Records or another supported source.
- Follow the sign-in and permission steps.
- Wait for your data to sync. OpenAI says this can take a few minutes, or longer for a big history.
- Check and update your current conditions, medications and family history.
- Ask your questions anywhere in ChatGPT.
What you can connect
- Apple Health, on the iOS app only
- Supported U.S. hospital and provider portals
- One Medical and Function Health
Wearables are where people get stuck. OpenAI says apps like WHOOP, Oura, Garmin, Strava and MyFitnessPal reach ChatGPT through Apple Health, not directly. So set the app to share with Apple Health first, then connect Apple Health to ChatGPT. Some of those apps' own scores may not come across.
The @Health trick
Here's a small tip from OpenAI's help page that saves a lot of frustration. If ChatGPT doesn't use your connected data when you expected it to, add @Health to your message. That tells it you want the answer personalised from Health.
A few prompts that work well once you're synced:
Copy this prompt
@Health Compare my latest cholesterol result with my previous tests and explain, in plain English, what's changed and what questions I should ask my doctor.
Copy this prompt
@Health Look at my sleep and activity over the last month and tell me whether my sleep is better on the days I walk more.
Copy this prompt
@Health I've got a GP appointment next week. Summarise what's changed since my last visit and help me write three questions to take with me.
Privacy settings to check first
This is the part I'd read before connecting anything. According to OpenAI:
- Connected medical records, Apple Health data and the conversations that use them aren't used to train its foundation models or to target ads, whatever your usual training setting is.
- Information connected in Health gets extra encryption on top of ChatGPT's standard encryption.
- If you disconnect an account, OpenAI deletes the data synced from it within 30 days. What's already in your chat history stays until you delete those chats.
Now the catch most people miss. Since September 2026, new Health connections follow your global plugin permission setting, and if you've never changed it, the default is Allow low-risk actions. If you'd rather ChatGPT checks with you first, go to Settings, then Plugins, then Health, and choose a stricter option such as Always ask.

Memory is the other one. When memory is on, conversations that use Health can create memories for future chats, though memories aren't made directly from your synced records. If you'd rather keep health talk separate, use Temporary Chat or a project with project-only memory. My guides to ChatGPT memory and temporary chat walk through both.
Updating your conditions and medications
You can ask ChatGPT to update what's saved in your Health profile during a chat, for example telling it you've stopped a medication or adding something to your family history. It confirms each change in the conversation. One limit to know: ChatGPT can't change the records your provider holds or what's stored in Apple Health. It only updates its own picture of your current situation.
Where did my old Health chats go?
If you used the earlier version of Health, OpenAI says your old chats and files sit in a Health Project under Projects in the sidebar. They don't move into the new Health tab automatically, and memories in that project stay inside it.
Using Health for someone else
OpenAI says the connected Health experience is meant for your own records. If you're helping a parent or partner, use a separate account, or a separate project with project-only memory and uploaded files, so their information doesn't mix with yours.
If your business is thinking about how staff use AI tools with sensitive information, that's a conversation I'm often having on my work with me page.
My verdict
ChatGPT Health is useful for making sense of results and preparing for appointments, as long as you treat it as a well-read helper and not a doctor. Before you connect anything, tighten the Health permission in Settings, decide how you want memory to behave, and keep anything urgent for a real professional. Used that way, it can make you a far better-prepared patient.
