Gemini Deep Think is Gemini's highest reasoning level for hard maths, science, coding and planning problems. To use it, go to gemini.google.com, click the model name, choose Pro, click it again and pick the Deep Think thinking level, then submit your prompt. It needs Google AI Ultra and you must be 18 or over, and Google now says Deep Think is being replaced by Gemini 4 Argon.
That last point is the one most guides haven't caught up with. Google's own help page now opens with a notice that Argon surpasses what Deep Think could do. So before you build a routine around Deep Think, it's worth knowing where it's heading.
I've written this from Google's Gemini help centre and release notes, read in October 2026.
What Deep Think does differently
Deep Think doesn't just answer quicker or longer. Google described the Gemini 3 version as using iterative rounds of reasoning to explore several possible answers at once, which is why it suited maths, science and logic problems. The earlier 2.5 version was described as thinking for longer and running parallel streams of thought, much like a person brainstorming.
The trade-off is time. Google says a Deep Think response generally takes a few minutes, and Gemini tells you when it's ready.
How Deep Think has changed
| Date | What Google released |
|---|---|
| August 2025 | Gemini 2.5 Deep Think, early and limited, for Google AI Ultra |
| December 2025 | Gemini 3 Deep Think for Google AI Ultra |
| February 2026 | A major Deep Think upgrade aimed at science, research and engineering |
| October 2026 | Gemini 4 Argon arrives; the help page says Deep Think is being replaced by it |
Who can use Gemini Deep Think
- A Google AI Ultra subscription, or a Google AI Ultra for Business licence
- Aged 18 or older
- Signed in to Gemini Apps
Google also labels Deep Think an experimental capability that it may discontinue or suspend at any time without notice. Put that next to the Argon notice and the direction is clear.
How to use Deep Think, step by step
- On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
- In the text box at the bottom, click the model name and select Pro.
- Click the model name again and select the Deep Think thinking level.
- Type your prompt.
- Click Submit, then leave it to work.
You don't have to sit and watch. Google says you can leave the chat and start another one while you wait. On the web, the finished answer is flagged next to that chat; in the mobile app, you get a notification, which may show even when your phone's locked depending on your settings.
The usage limit catch
When you reach a Gemini usage limit, Google says Deep Think becomes temporarily unavailable until your limit refreshes. Because each answer takes minutes of heavy reasoning, I'd save it for questions that deserve it rather than everyday chat.
Prompts that suit Deep Think
Deep Think is wasted on a quick rewrite. It earns its keep on problems with lots of moving parts, where you want the reasoning as well as the answer:
Copy this prompt
I run a small online shop with three suppliers, two warehouses and rising delivery times. Here are last quarter's figures (paste them). Work out the main cause of the delays, test at least two alternative explanations, and recommend the cheapest fix with your reasoning.
Copy this prompt
Check this pricing model for errors (paste the formulas). Explain any logic that breaks at higher volumes and show the corrected version step by step.
Work with meWant AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Two habits make a big difference. Paste in all the data and constraints at the start, because a follow-up means another wait of several minutes. And ask it to list its assumptions before the answer, so you can spot quickly whether it's misunderstood the problem.
Deep Think vs Deep Research
People mix these up all the time. Deep Think is about reasoning harder on the problem you give it. Deep Research goes out and gathers information from lots of sources, then writes it up as a report. If you need facts collected, use Gemini Deep Research. If you need a hard problem worked through, that's the reasoning side.
What to use instead: Gemini 4 Argon
Google's help page says Gemini 4 Argon surpasses what Deep Think was capable of and gives better responses for the most demanding prompts. Argon arrived in the Gemini app in October 2026, described by Google as its frontier model for complex tasks. If you've got access, I'd start testing your toughest Deep Think prompts on Argon now, so you're not caught out if the Deep Think option disappears. My guide on how to use Gemini 4 Argon covers setup and prompts.
If you'd like help deciding which AI tools and plans are worth paying for in your business, that's the kind of thing I help with on my work with me page.
My verdict
Gemini Deep Think is excellent for the handful of problems where you'd normally need a specialist and an afternoon. But it's Ultra-only, it uses your limits quickly, and Google has told us it's on the way out. If you already pay for Ultra, use Deep Think for the hardest jobs and start comparing the same prompts on Argon. If you don't, there's no reason to upgrade for Deep Think alone.
