The only official sign is a small black star badge next to someone's display name, which means they subscribe to Snapchat+. The catch is that Snapchat turns the badge off by default, so no star doesn't prove they don't have it.
So if you see the star, you know. If you don't, you can't tell either way, because plenty of subscribers never switch the badge on.
Below is how the badge works, what else shows up on a profile, the star that people mix it up with, and the plans behind it. Everything here comes from Snapchat Support's own pages, read in October 2026.
The Snapchat+ badge: what it looks like and where it shows
Snapchat Support describes it as a black star badge that subscribers can add to their display name to let friends know they're on Snapchat+. You'll see it next to their display name.
Two details matter. First, it's off by default. A subscriber has to go into their Profile and toggle it on. Second, Snapchat says friends should see the badge as long as they're on an updated app version. If your app is old, you might miss a badge that's there.
What you can and can't tell from outside
| What you see | What it tells you | Reliable? |
|---|---|---|
| Black star next to their display name | They subscribe to Snapchat+ and chose to show the badge | Yes |
| No black star | Nothing. The badge is off by default | No |
| A Snapchat+ label on their Profile | Snapchat uses profile labels for Snap Stars and Snapchat+ subscribers | Yes, when it's shown |
| A star badge on a famous account | Usually a Snap Star, a creator verified by Snap, not a subscriber | Check the Profile label |
Snapchat's page on account labels says some profiles display a special label, and that labels are used for two groups: Snap Star profiles and Snapchat+ subscribers. It adds that you'll see label information directly on the user's Profile. So the Profile is the place to check, not the Chat list.
What you won't find is a list of subscribers, a search filter or any setting that reveals someone's plan. Snapchat doesn't offer one. Anyone selling a "Snapchat+ checker" is guessing.
How to tell if someone has Snapchat Plus, step by step
- Update Snapchat first, so you can see badges at all.
- Open a Chat with the person, or search their name.
- Tap their Bitmoji or name to open their Profile.
- Look next to their display name for the black star badge.
- Check for a profile label. If it mentions Snapchat+, that's your answer.
- If you see a star on a public figure's profile, read the label: it may be a Snap Star badge instead.
Don't confuse it with the Snap Star
This is where most people go wrong. Snapchat has two different stars. The Snapchat+ badge is a black star a subscriber adds to their name. A Snap Star is a public figure or creator Snap has verified, and Snapchat says they're indicated by a star too.
Snap Star status has nothing to do with paying. Snapchat states plainly that it doesn't charge or accept payment for verification, and that no third party does it on Snap's behalf. If you want the full verification route, my guide on getting verified on Snapchat walks through it.
How to show your own Snapchat+ badge
If you're the subscriber and you want friends to know, Snapchat Support gives three steps:
- Go to your Profile.
- Tap your Snapchat+ membership card at the top.
- Toggle on Snapchat+ Badge.
Toggle it off again the same way if you'd rather keep your subscription private. Some of the other perks are just as subtle, like the half swipe trick that only works fully for subscribers.
What Snapchat+ includes, and what it'll charge you
Snapchat's own feature list runs to more than thirty items, including #1 Best Friend, Custom App Icon, Custom Chat Colors, Story Rewatch, Story Timestamps, Story View Notifications, Streak Restore, Solar System and the Snapchat+ Badge itself.

There are several plans. Snapchat lists a monthly or yearly individual subscription, plus a Family Plan, a Platinum Plan and a Lens+ Plan, and says some of them may not be available in your region.
Family Plans count too. Snapchat says the Family Plan lets the person who subscribes add 2 more people, and each member can use Snapchat+ features. So a friend can be a Snapchat+ user without ever having signed up themselves, which is one more reason the badge is the only thing you can go on.
On the price, Snapchat won't give one global figure. Its help page says pricing may vary by country and device, and that the price shown on your device is the one you'll be charged. To see it, open Snapchat Settings and tap Snapchat+. If you've already signed up and want out, here's how to cancel Snapchat Plus on each device.
My verdict
Look for the black star, and treat it as proof only when it's there. A missing badge tells you nothing, because Snapchat switches it off by default and lots of subscribers never touch it. If the star is on a well-known account, check the Profile label before you decide, because that's far more likely to be a Snap Star. And ignore any app or site that claims to reveal who pays for Snapchat+. Snapchat doesn't share that, so nobody else can either.
Frequently asked questions
Can you see who has Snapchat Plus?
Only when they've turned on the Snapchat+ Badge, a black star next to their display name, or when a Snapchat+ label shows on their Profile. Snapchat turns the badge off by default, so many subscribers don't show it.
What does the black star mean on Snapchat?
Snapchat Support says the black star badge next to a display name shows that the person subscribes to Snapchat+. It's different from the Snap Star badge used for creators Snap has verified.
Why can't I see someone's Snapchat+ badge?
Either they haven't switched it on, or your app is out of date. Snapchat says friends should see the badge as long as they're on an updated app version.
How much is Snapchat Plus?
Snapchat doesn't publish one global price. Its help page says pricing may vary by country and device, and the price shown in your app is the one you'll pay. Open Settings and tap Snapchat+ to see it.
Does Snapchat tell you if a friend subscribes to Snapchat+?
No. There's no notification or list of subscribers. The badge and the Profile label are the only signs Snapchat shows.
