I get this question from small business owners who want to run a channel or a community and are worried about a bill turning up later. The short answer is that you can build a full Telegram presence without paying. The longer answer is worth knowing, because Telegram has three layers now (free, Premium and Business) and the paid ones change what your audience sees.
What Telegram gives you for free
Telegram's Premium FAQ is clear on this: every feature that existed before Premium launched is still free. That includes:

Telegram Business is described in its own terms of service as a subscription membership that may be available for purchase in certain countries. If you're using Telegram to talk to customers, that's the layer aimed at you.
The Telegram Premium pricing quirk people miss
Telegram doesn't charge everyone the same price for Premium. Its FAQ explains that when you subscribe through @PremiumBot, the currency and price of your first subscription are based on the country code of your account's phone number. To get that local price, your payment method has to be issued by a bank in that country with a local billing address.
Two more details from the same FAQ are worth knowing before you pay:
- Subscribing through @PremiumBot is cheaper than signing up through Google Play or the App Store.
- Each account needs its own subscription. If you run a personal account and a business account, that's two subscriptions.
- Gifted subscriptions use a global rate, so the person you gift it to may pay a different price when they renew themselves.
- If Premium ends, you keep your first 10 chat folders, and any extra folders are locked.
How to use Telegram for your business without paying
- Download Telegram and register with your phone number. Telegram's FAQ notes that invites sent as SMS from iOS are charged as normal texts by your carrier, so share a download link instead.
- Create a public channel for announcements and a group for conversation. Both are free, at any size.
- Ask your Premium followers to boost your channel. Telegram says channels level up through boosts from Premium subscribers, and each level adds one more story a day and one more custom reaction.
- Run a giveaway if you want boosts fast. Telegram says a channel that hosts a giveaway gets boosts straight away, and each code includes a free Premium subscription for the winner.
- Only look at Telegram Business once you need automated replies or a chatbot on your profile.

Telegram's FAQ says it launched small, non-targeted ads in certain public channels in 2021, and Premium in 2022. Those ads appear only in large one-to-many public channels, not in your private chats or groups, and Premium subscribers don't see them. If you run a big public channel, your followers may see them under your posts, which is worth knowing before you promise a clean feed.
Can you cancel Telegram Business?
Yes. Telegram's terms for Telegram Business say you can cancel at any time from the Telegram Business section in your account Settings, or through your Apple ID if you bought it there. Your subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period, and Telegram says you won't get a refund or credit for the days left. Use free Telegram. For almost every small business, community or creator I work with, the free version does everything you need: unlimited storage, huge channels, calls and groups. Pay for Premium only if you personally want bigger uploads or no channel ads, and buy it through @PremiumBot rather than the app stores.
