Signal is the better fit if privacy is your priority, because every message and call is end-to-end encrypted by default. Telegram is the better fit for big groups, broadcast channels and syncing chats across many devices. Many people use Signal for private conversations and Telegram for communities.
They look similar on the surface: free apps, phone sign-up, groups, calls and stickers. Underneath, they're built around different priorities, and that difference is what you're choosing between.
Privacy by default versus features by default
Signal's own site says its end-to-end encryption is powered by the open-source Signal Protocol, and that privacy isn't an optional mode but the way Signal works. Telegram's FAQ describes cloud chats that sync instantly across all your devices, plus a separate feature called secret chats for conversations you want to keep to one device. That's the catch many people miss: on Telegram, you choose the more private mode chat by chat, while on Signal it's always on.
Side by side
| Area | Signal | Telegram |
|---|---|---|
| Default encryption | End-to-end for every message and call | Cloud chats by default, secret chats as an option |
| Groups | Private group chats | Groups for up to 200,000 people, per its FAQ |
| Broadcasting | Not its focus | Channels for unlimited audiences |
| Multiple devices | Linked devices | Log in on as many devices as you like |
| Phone number | Needed to sign up, usernames hide it | Used to log in, usernames available |
Phone numbers and usernames
Both apps use your phone number to create an account. Signal's blog explains that you can now share a username instead of your number, though you'll still need a number to register. Telegram also lets people find you by username. If you don't want to hand your number to a group of strangers, set up a username on whichever app you use and check who can see your number in the privacy settings.
Which suits which job
- Private conversations with family, clients or colleagues: privacy-first messaging is the safer default.
- Large communities and announcement channels: Telegram's groups and channels are built for scale.
- Many devices: cloud sync makes it easy to pick up a chat on a laptop, tablet or phone.
- Sensitive work: choose the app where encryption doesn't depend on remembering a setting.
Setting up either app safely
- Turn on a PIN or two-step verification.
- Set a username and hide your phone number from strangers.
- Review who can add you to groups.
- Turn on disappearing messages for sensitive chats.
- Check which devices are linked and remove old ones.
Using them for business
Plenty of small businesses run customer communities on Telegram and use Signal for private team chats. If your customers are already on WhatsApp, my guide to setting up WhatsApp Business might be the easier route. And if your team records calls or uses AI notes, read my piece on the privacy risk of AI meeting notes before you share anything sensitive.
Groups, channels and communities
This is where the two apps differ most for creators and businesses. Telegram's FAQ describes groups for up to 200,000 people and channels for broadcasting to unlimited audiences, which is why so many communities and news channels run there. Private messaging apps are built for conversations among people who know each other, so they work best for families, friends and teams rather than public audiences.
If you run a community, think about moderation before you grow. Large groups attract spam, so set clear rules, appoint admins and decide who can post links.
Calls and video
Both apps offer voice and video calls. Telegram's FAQ mentions end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls and group calls for up to 200 participants. For private one-to-one calls, either works well. For bigger group calls, check the participant limits for the size of group you need.
Moving a group from one app to the other
- Explain why you're moving in one short message.
- Share an invite link to the new group.
- Pin the link in the old group for a couple of weeks.
- Move the most active members first and let others follow.
- Archive the old group once most people have joined.
People rarely move because an app is better on paper. They move because the people they talk to are there, so make it easy.
Which one your contacts already use
Messaging apps only work if the people you talk to are on them. Before you choose, look at who's already on each app in your contacts. You may find your family is on one and your community on the other, which is a perfectly good reason to keep both. Pick the default you'll use for new conversations, and move the most important chats first.
My verdict
If you only want one app for private conversations, I'd pick the one that encrypts everything by default. If you're building a community or broadcasting to lots of people, the app with huge groups and channels is the better tool. There's no shame in using both: one for privacy, one for reach.
