DataCamp is only partly free: the free Basic plan gives you the first chapter of every course and a free professional profile, but not the full courses or certificates. Full access needs a paid Premium or Teams subscription, unless you qualify for DataCamp Donates, which gives eligible nonprofits and student clubs a year or more of free access.
DataCamp is a popular place to learn Python, SQL, R and AI skills, and I hear from lots of people who sign up thinking it's a free course site. It's better to think of the free plan as a long free sample: enough to see whether you like the teaching style, not enough to finish a course.
DataCamp free vs paid plans
| Basic (free) | Premium | Teams | |
|---|---|---|---|
| First chapter of every course | Included | Included | Included |
| Full courses and tracks | No | Included | Included |
| Certificates | Not included | Included | Included |
| Professional profile | Free | Included | Included |
| Who it's for | Trying DataCamp out | Individuals | Teams of 2 and up |
DataCamp's own FAQ puts it simply: with a free account, you can only access the first chapter of its courses. Its pricing page also showed a discounted "special price" on Premium and Teams when I checked in October 2026, so check the current price on the day rather than trusting a figure you've seen elsewhere.
Who can get DataCamp free in full
DataCamp Donates is the route most people don't know about. DataCamp says it partners with nonprofits worldwide to deliver free data and AI education, offering a year or more of free access to its entire content curriculum. It lists two main groups:
- Nonprofits that serve people who need access to education.
- Student clubs that are officially affiliated with degree-giving institutions. DataCamp also points these clubs to DataCamp Classrooms.
It also says it partners with select for-profit organisations that provide transformational services to disadvantaged people for free.
Things to know before you pay for DataCamp
- Billing is recurring. DataCamp's FAQ says you're charged monthly or yearly from your sign-up date, and you can cancel at any time.
- You can pause a monthly subscription, but not a yearly one. DataCamp says a paused account reactivates automatically when the pause ends, and you don't lose progress.
- College students can apply for a Premium Student Plan, which DataCamp says is currently more than half off the regular price.
- There's nothing to install. DataCamp says all courses, coding exercises and projects run in your browser.
- Ask your employer. DataCamp has a page on expensing your subscription, which is worth a look if you're learning for work.
How to get the most from DataCamp's free plan
- Create a free Basic account.
- Take the first chapter of several courses in the skill you want, such as Python or SQL, to compare teaching styles.
- Build your free profile as you go.
- If you like it, decide between paying, applying through DataCamp Donates, or finishing the subject on a free course elsewhere.
If the free first chapters have got you hooked but you'd rather not pay, I've compared free data analytics courses that include certificates. You can also look at a Coursera free trial or my roundup of online course platforms.
What else the free DataCamp plan includes
DataCamp's comparison table shows a couple of things the free Basic plan does include beyond first chapters. Live code-alongs are listed as included on Basic, Premium and Teams, so you can join those without paying. Career and skill tracks, on the other hand, are listed as not included on Basic, which means the structured learning paths are a paid feature.
You don't need any background to start. DataCamp's FAQ says it has courses for everyone from beginners to experts, and anyone interested in data science and analytics can use it to learn new skills. If you're coming from marketing or finance, that makes the free plan a low-risk way to see whether data work suits you.
DataCamp certifications sit behind the paywall
DataCamp runs its own certifications as well as courses, and its site lists options such as Data Analyst Associate, Data Engineer Associate, SQL Associate, Python Developer Associate, AI Fundamentals, Data Literacy, Power BI Data Analyst and GitHub Foundations. Because certificates are listed as not included on the free Basic plan, plan on a paid subscription, or DataCamp Donates access, if a certification is your goal.
If you only need to prove a skill to an employer or client, compare that with free courses whose certificates cost nothing, before you commit to a yearly plan.
My advice
Use DataCamp's free plan as a test drive, not a course. Try the first chapters, see if the in-browser exercises suit you, then decide. If you work for a nonprofit or run a student club, apply to DataCamp Donates before anything else, because a year of full access for free beats any discount. Everyone else should compare the paid plan with the free courses that come with certificates before signing up for a yearly plan you can't pause.
