Coursera Plus has a 7-day free trial, but only on the monthly plan. You add a payment method, you aren't charged until day seven ends, and you can cancel any time before then for free. The annual plan has no trial; instead Coursera gives you 14 days to ask for a refund. Most single Specializations and Professional Certificates also start with a 7-day trial, and some shorter Specializations only get 1 day.
I get asked about Coursera a lot by business owners who want to learn AI, data or marketing skills without going back to university. The trial is simple on the surface, but Coursera's help centre has a handful of rules that change how you should use the week, and one of them can cost you a financial aid application.
Coursera trial options at a glance
| What you're trying | Trial | What happens after |
|---|---|---|
| Coursera Plus, billed monthly | 7 days | Charged $59 a month as of October 2026, cancel anytime |
| Coursera Plus, billed annually | No trial | $399 a year as of October 2026, with up to 14 days to request a refund |
| Most monthly Specializations and Professional Certificates | 7 days | Charged for the first month when the trial ends |
| Some shorter Specializations | 1 day | Charged after 24 hours |
Coursera says Plus includes more than 10,000 courses, Projects, Specializations and Professional Certificates. Degrees and MasterTrack Certificates aren't included, and some individual programmes are excluded too, so look for the Coursera Plus badge on the course page before you start.
How to start a Coursera free trial
- Log in to Coursera.org in a web browser, not the app.
- Open the page for Coursera Plus, or for the Specialization or certificate you want to try.
- Click Enroll.
- Choose the option that appears: Start Free Trial gives you 7 days, and Try free for 1 day gives you 24 hours.
- Add your payment details and note the date the trial ends.
The option you see tells you which trial you're getting, so read the button before you click. If you only see the 1-day option on a short Specialization and want longer, Coursera Plus monthly is the way to get a full week.
Five Coursera trial rules most people miss
No certificate until you've paid
You can finish a whole course during the trial, but Coursera says you won't receive the certificate until the trial ends and your first monthly payment goes through. If a certificate is the whole point, the trial is a test drive, not a shortcut.
Starting a trial cancels a financial aid application
This is the one that hurts. Coursera says any financial aid application you've submitted is cancelled when you start a free trial. You can apply again after the trial ends, but you've lost your place. If you're waiting on aid, don't click Start Free Trial.
You can't start it in the app
Coursera says free trials can't be started from the mobile app. Enrol from a web browser, then use the app to learn.
Capstone projects stay locked
If your Specialization ends with a Capstone Project, you won't be able to open it until the trial is over.
One trial per subscription
You're only eligible for one free trial per subscription. There's one useful exception: if you're on a 1-day trial and upgrade to Coursera Plus monthly, Coursera says you start a fresh 7-day trial.
That small charge on your card
When you start, you may see a pending transaction of $0 or $1 as of October 2026. Coursera says this is only a check that your card is valid, it's never charged, and it disappears within 5 to 7 business days.
How to cancel your Coursera Plus trial
Where you cancel depends on where you signed up.
- Log in to Coursera.org in a browser.
- Go to your Purchases page.
- Open the Subscriptions tab and find Coursera Plus or the programme you're trialling.
- Click Cancel subscription and confirm.
In the Coursera app, it's the settings gear, then My Subscriptions, then Manage Subscription, then Cancel subscription. If you paid through the App Store or Google Play, Coursera can't cancel it from the website, so you'll need to cancel in your Apple or Google account.
When you cancel during a trial, you keep access until the trial period ends. Your progress and grades are saved, and your course switches to preview mode once access runs out.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
The double billing trap with Specializations
If you already pay for a single Specialization and then start Coursera Plus, the older subscription doesn't cancel by itself. Coursera says you must cancel it, or you'll be charged for both. Also, Specialization and Professional Certificate subscriptions end automatically once you finish all the content, but Coursera Plus never auto-cancels. It keeps billing until you stop it.
Monthly or annual Coursera Plus?
If you're not sure you'll stick with it, start monthly so you get the 7-day trial and can leave without paying anything. If you already know you'll learn all year, the annual plan costs less over twelve months, and the 14-day refund window gives you a safety net. One catch: Coursera says any certificates you earn in those first 14 days are revoked if you take the refund.
Single programmes run from $49 to $79 a month as of October 2026, so Plus makes sense once you're taking more than one course at a time. If you're weighing platforms, read my Coursera and Udemy comparison and whether Coursera is worth trusting for career credentials.
One more thing worth checking: Coursera says you can claim Coursera Plus back from your employer if they offer education reimbursement that covers online learning, and you'll get a receipt by email to submit. If you're employed, ask before you pay out of your own pocket.
My verdict
Take the Coursera Plus trial if you want to sample several courses in a week and you're happy to pay before you get a certificate. Plan two or three courses, start them on day one, and set a reminder for day six. And if you've applied for financial aid, wait for that decision first, because starting a trial cancels it.
