Tipalti Alternatives: 10 Payables and Payout Tools

The best Tipalti alternatives automate invoices, approvals and payments to suppliers or contractors in many countries. Some are full procure-to-pay suites, some focus on mass payouts and some are simply good international business accounts. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Tipalti is known for taking the pain out of paying lots of people in lots of places: collecting their details, checking tax forms and sending the money. Not every business needs all of that, and some need more control over purchasing before an invoice ever arrives.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Every description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you're tidying up the other side of the ledger too, my guide to AI automation for invoicing and admin is a handy companion.

Tipalti alternatives at a glance

In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site names a free plan or free tier, Trial only means a time-limited trial and No means neither is stated on the pages read. Finance platforms in this category rarely name free plans, so most start with a demo.

Ten Tipalti alternatives to consider

Airwallex

Coupa

Medius

Best for: Finance teams dealing with e-invoicing mandates in several countries who want invoice capture and approvals automated end to end.

Ottimate

Best for: Multi-location businesses such as restaurant groups that want invoices coded, routed and approved by AI before anyone touches them.

Payoneer

Best for: Online businesses that send and receive money across borders and want batch payments to freelancers and suppliers from one account.

Precoro

Routable

Stampli

Best for: Finance teams that want every invoice question and approval discussed on the invoice itself, connected to the accounting system they already run.

Trolley

Best for: Platforms paying creators, gig workers or affiliates who need tax details collected and payouts sent in many countries.

Wise Business

Best for: Startups and small businesses that pay a handful of overseas suppliers and want clear exchange rates without an enterprise contract.

The IRS form that slows down overseas payouts

Here's the paperwork that trips up teams paying people outside the US. The IRS says a foreign person gives Form W-8 BEN to the withholding agent or payer, and should submit it when requested whether or not they're claiming a reduced rate or exemption.

If you pay contractors outside the US, a tool that collects the right tax form during onboarding saves weeks of chasing later. Ask each vendor which forms it gathers, how it validates them and what happens when a form expires or details change.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Procurement-first, payables-first or payout-first?

Some tools start with purchasing: requests, approvals and purchase orders, so invoices simply match what was agreed. Others start with accounts payable, capturing invoices and routing approvals before payment. A third group starts with payouts, built for platforms that pay hundreds of creators, sellers or gig workers.

Which group fits depends on who you pay. A business paying a few dozen suppliers needs strong approvals and accounting sync. A platform paying thousands of individuals needs onboarding, tax checks and payout methods in many countries. Buying for the wrong group leaves you with features nobody uses.

Switching payables tools without missing a payment

  1. List every supplier and payee with their payment method and country.
  2. Collect any missing tax forms and bank details before the move.
  3. Run one payment cycle in parallel so nothing goes out twice.
  4. Check the accounting sync on real invoices before turning off the old tool.
  5. Tell suppliers about the change and how they'll be notified of payments.
  6. Keep records from the old system for as long as your accountant advises.

Controls worth switching on from day one

  • Approval limits. Larger invoices go to a senior approver automatically.
  • Duplicate checks. The same invoice can't go through twice by accident.
  • Bank detail changes. Any change to a payee's details needs a second check.
  • Audit trail. Every approval and edit is recorded with a name and date.

Fraud checks that protect your cash

Fake invoices and changed bank details are some of the oldest tricks in the book. Whatever tool you choose, insist that any change to a payee's bank details is confirmed through a known contact, not the email asking for the change. It takes a minute and it's the habit most likely to save you from a nasty surprise.

What your accountant will want to see

Your accountant won't care how pretty the dashboard is. They'll want clean exports, clear approval records and payments that match the invoices in the books. Ask them to look at the shortlist with you, because they've probably seen how these tools behave at year end. If they're not keen on one, it's worth hearing why before you've moved every supplier across.

Do you make a payables or payout tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on Tipalti alternatives

Work out who you pay before you look at features. Count your suppliers, your contractors and the countries they're in. Those three numbers tell you whether you need a procurement suite, an AP tool or a payout platform, and most vendors will happily sell you more than you need.

Then ask to see a supplier being added from start to finish, including tax details and approvals. That one walkthrough shows you more than any feature list. If late or messy invoices are part of the problem, my piece on invoicing in arrears explains the timing questions behind them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Tipalti?

It depends on who you pay. Procurement suites suit companies controlling purchases, AP tools suit supplier invoices and payout platforms suit businesses paying many individuals.

Is there a free alternative to Tipalti?

Free plans are rare in this category. Most tools offer demos, and a few offer free trials. Check the table.

What is Form W-8 BEN for?

The IRS says foreign persons give it to the withholding agent or payer to certify their status when requested.

Can these tools pay contractors in other countries?

Many can. Check which countries and payout methods each one supports before you commit.

Do payables tools connect to accounting software?

Most connect to common accounting systems, but test the sync on real invoices during your trial.

How long does a switch take?

A small finance team can move in a few weeks if supplier details are clean. Messy records take longer.
