Best Sports Data APIs (2026): 11 Providers Compared

The best sports data APIs deliver scores, fixtures, statistics and odds to your app or website in a format your code can read. Some are free or community-run, some suit indie developers, and others are enterprise providers behind sportsbooks and broadcasters. Eleven options follow in no particular order.

Building anything around sport, whether it's a fantasy league, a club app or a results widget for a local news site, starts with the same question: where does the data come from? Copying scores by hand stops working on the first busy Saturday, and scraping someone else's site is fragile and often against their terms.

The eleven sports data APIs below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the provider's own website, read this week. If you're planning the site itself, my checklist of features to have on a sports website pairs well with this list.

Sports data APIs at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free allowance or an open source version. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start for free, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Which sports data API fits your build

  • Many leagues from one indie provider: balldontlie.
  • Fantasy cricket apps: Entity Sport.
  • Betting odds from many bookmakers: The Odds API or Goalserve.
  • US sports with fantasy projections: SportsDataIO.
  • Enterprise betting and media partners: Sportradar or Stats Perform.

Protect your API key and your allowance

OWASP, the open web security project, lists unrestricted resource consumption in its API Security Top 10, warning that successful attacks can lead to denial of service or a jump in operating bills. Sports data is a classic case, because live scores tempt developers to request updates every few seconds.

Keep your API key on your own server rather than inside a mobile app or web page, cache results where you can, and set alerts on your usage. One leaked key can use up a whole month's allowance in an afternoon.

Live data versus historical data

Live data covers scores and events as they happen. It's what score apps, betting tools and live blogs need, and it's usually the most demanding part of any plan because of how often you request it.

Historical data covers past seasons, results and player statistics. It suits analysis, prediction models and fantasy research, and it can often be downloaded once and stored, which is far easier on your usage.

Questions to ask a sports data provider

  1. Which sports, leagues and competitions are covered?
  2. How quickly do live scores update?
  3. Does it include player statistics, lineups and injuries?
  4. Are odds included, or sold separately?
  5. What are the terms for displaying the data publicly?
  6. Is there a free plan or trial to test with?

Signs it's time to upgrade your sports feed

  • Fans spot scores before your app shows them. Move to a faster feed.
  • You keep hitting request limits. Cache results or upgrade.
  • Users ask for player statistics. Add a deeper data plan.
  • You're scraping another site. Switch to a licensed API.

Do you make a sports data API or feed? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing a sports data API

Start with the exact leagues and data points your product needs, then shortlist only providers that cover all of them. A coverage gap found after launch is painful, because switching provider means rewriting how your app reads the data.

Test on a quiet day and a busy one, because speed on a Tuesday afternoon tells you little about a cup final. If your app's aimed at fans, my guide on improving your sports marketing covers the audience side.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sports data API?

A sports data API delivers sports information such as scores, fixtures, statistics and odds in a machine-readable format your app or website can use.

Is there a free sports data API?

Yes. Several providers offer free plans or free access to top competitions. The free plan column above shows what each provider's site says.

Which sports data API covers the most leagues?

Coverage varies a lot. Check each provider's coverage page for the specific leagues and competitions you need.

Can I use a sports API for a betting app?

Some providers specialise in betting and odds data. Check their terms, and the gambling rules where your users live.

How often do live scores update?

It depends on the provider and plan. Live feeds can update within seconds, while lower-tier or free plans may refresh less often.

Do I need permission to show sports data on my site?

Your provider's terms decide what you can display publicly. Read them before you launch.
